Mr Dave Looks good, I'll share this with my company to see if they can use it. Might find it very useful on my home PC!

Description on the BitsDuJour page say it runs under Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 2003, 2008. If you check their web page it runs on more platforms, including Win 10:
Daminion Server: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 2003 R2, 2008,
2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2, 2016*
Daminion Standalone/Client: Windows: XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, 2003,
2003 R2, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2, 2016

Can files be stored off-line (external drive or web storage) but stay in catalog for searching? Can I move location of some or all files after adding them, and update the catalog with new location, without re-entering all the tags? Or are all files required to be in one location? I've got terabytes of files, and at work it's also a large amount!

It's very photo-oriented and seems to serve that need very well. Would like to see a version that handles audio, document files (MS Office, Libre Office, text), program files, graphics files, CAD files.... anything. Maybe this does, but it says it handles 100 media formats. Being able add tags and comments to any file, then searching for it by filename, location, date, size, comments, tags... Isn't that what computers have promised for about 30 years?

Thanks, BDJ and Daminion Software!

Edward Smith Is Basic just one catalog that holds just 25,000 pictures, or can there be more than one catalog per install? If only one, is there a discount for Standard or Pro? I want unlimited but $100 is a hefty price. I would be using this personally but I have way more than 25,000 pictures to catalog.

Murat User Hello Mr Dave!

Thanks for your feedback!

1. Yes. You can store your files on external drives or a web-storage via cloud services like Dropbox, SkyDrive, Google Drive. You can also host your Daminion Server on a Windows hosting or cloud (self-managed). In all cases you own your data and don't pay for extra storage space.

2. Sure. You can relink a folder or a single file without re-entering tags. Right click on a folder name in the tag tree and navigate to the "Relink Folder" menu.

3. Some of our customers use Daminion Server version to manage more than 1 million items per one shared catalog. Daminion Basic version can manage up to 25k files per one local catalog.

4. Daminion handles most of the media formats you mentioned, including MS Office, PDF, vector images, audio, CAD. You can also add support for custom formats (main menu: Catalog > Import Filters...)

HJ B The following information would be helpful:

1. How many different accounts can this software handle?
2. Is an account a specific pc or a specific user, i.e. can a user go to any pc on the network and interact with the files that user is authorized to handle?
3.Can particular users be authorized to view but not modify or delete a particular file?
4. Can a particular user be authorized to work with a file, but not copy it or attach it to an email?
5.What are the rules with regard to more than one user attempting to use/modify the same file at the same time?
6.If a user has remote access to a computer on the lan, will that user therefore also have remote access to the files managed by this system if that user has local authorization to use that file on the LAN/
7 Is there a backup component to this program or must backup be done independently of this software?
8. Is there a log of who viewed/modified/ deleted/copied what?

For the price, I do not expect all of those features, but I would like to know what features are present.

Murat Korkmazov Hello HJ,

Daminion has a server edition that was designed with multi user access in mind.

So multiple users can access and use the same server catalog simultaneously at the same time and handle files from multiple locations including NAS/SAN devices.

Jackie Kerouac Is this Basic edition limited to only one catalog holding 25,000 pictures, or can there be more than one catalog per install?

Daria User Hello HJ B
1-2. You can register as many accounts as you wish (accout is a user by the way), however the daminion server licensing is based on the number of concurrent connections. Thus, with 3 concurrent connection you can create 10 or 20 or more users, but only 3 of them will be able to access the catalog simultaneously.

3. Yes, each user is assigned one of four possible user roles which differ in a set of access rights. You can read more about different user roles by this link http://help.daminion.net/...anagement/
What you are asking about is possible with the Viewer role

4. Unfortunately, no. A user with the guest role is forbidden to send files by email, but the rights set for the Guest is narrowed to searching for files and viewing them only.

5. Daminion server prevents multiple users from simultaneous modification of files. Before opening a file with an external editor, a user should check the file out and therefore this file gets blocked for other users working with the catalog. Once modifications are done, a user checks the file in and makes it visible and accessible for others. Btw, Daminion stores all versions of the file (the original and all modified ones) so you can freely switch between the versions and any time revert to the version you want to see in the thumbnail window.

6. Yes

7. With the server version you can schedule your backups http://daminion.net/tutor...ion-server. Daminion standalone catalog backups are created automatically when upgrading and downgrading. For regular backups of Daminion standalone you need to use a special software.

8. Unfortunately, there is no a single log of who made what to the files. Modification log is however a part of the version control feature.
