Metta Zetty Can this suite be installed and run from within Dropbox?

Sep 27 2014 at 6:01am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla Metta, this is a regular Windows program. You can download documents from Dropbox and edit them, but SoftMaker Office for Windows does not directly open files from Dropbox.
SoftMaker Software GmbH - Sep 27 2014 at 6:13am Copy Link
ron r Version 2012 has been out for a while now, is there any indication when version 2014 will come out (or version 2015?).
Sep 27 2014 at 6:25am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla It will be version 2015, but it is still some months off (and it won't start out these prices offered here...).
SoftMaker Software GmbH - Sep 27 2014 at 6:26am Copy Link
Metta Zetty Thanks for your prompt follow-up, Marin.

The reason I asked about Dropbox is that I read somewhere that this suite could be run from a USB drive, and my (perhaps mistaken?) understanding is that such portable programs can also be installed and run from within Dropbox.

Do you know if this suite will function properly if I install it inside my Dropbox folder?
Sep 27 2014 at 7:00am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla Metta, I misunderstood you.

Yes, you can run SoftMaker Office from a USB stick. However, you need to run a special installer that takes the regular version and copies it to the USB stick.

What you can then do is make a ZIP file of the SoftMaker Office folder on the USB stick and put that into Dropbox. And whenever you need it, you can go to Dropbox, download the ZIP file, unpack it to some local disk or stick, and run SoftMaker Office from there.

SoftMaker Software GmbH - Sep 27 2014 at 7:03am Copy Link
Roderick Nicolson Actually, surely if you put it into a public folder in Dropbox it will become available on all computers that have that folder and won't need to be zipped and unzipped or moved each time a user wants to use it?

_*_ @Martin Kotulla, I own SoftMaker Office Standard presently. This is the program that allowed me to give up MS Office for good; thanks for that!

I also own eMClient with Lifetime upgrades which I purchased from Cloudswave.

My question is, do I gain anything purchasing or upgrading to the Professional version; especially since this is such a great deal here?

One last question, will there be a sale for the Linux version of SoftMaker Office here on Bits as well?

I look forward to the 2015 version coming out; hopefully in January 2015.

TESS273 I've tried to use SoftMaker Office 2012 trial, it doens't work with touch screen. Do you have any plan to support touch screen in 2015 version?
Sep 28 2014 at 5:16pm Copy Link
Martin Kotulla If you have Office Standard and eM Client, the only advantage of SoftMaker Office Professional is the included 5-language Berlitz dictionary.

SoftMaker Software GmbH - Sep 28 2014 at 11:41pm Copy Link
HJ B I have Windows 8.1. When I tried to install the SoftMaker Office 2012, Windows prevented the installation, but gave me the option of over-riding the prevention. When I over-rode the prevention, Windows informed me: "This app can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher."
Sep 29 2014 at 12:23am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla I can only imagine this to be a bad download. The install definitely works on Windows 8.1. Please try downloading again.

Tiziano Sangiorgi tizsan I wnt to know which kind of license is for Softmaker Professional 2012 (annual, lifetime or the license finish when will arrive the next release when peraphs you must pay for update to the new release.
Because eM client is included wich kind of license is for eM client ?
The same for Softmaker or is a different license ?
Sep 29 2014 at 1:21am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla Tiziano, the license is perpetual. When a new major version is published, you have the opportunity to upgrade at a discounted price.

The same license applies to our build of eM Client. You can use it perpetually, but you will receive future versions only for a fee.

TESS273 @Martin,

I asked about touch screen support in 2015. Why don't you answer my question?
Sep 29 2014 at 1:49am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla Sorry, I missed it.

Even SoftMaker Office 2012 can be operated with the finger. However, some screen elements might be too small. You can switch to large icons (in Tools/Options) to alleviate this problem. The next SoftMaker Office will have additional improvements for touchscreen operation (our upcoming SoftMaker Office HD for Android implements these already).
SoftMaker Software GmbH - Sep 29 2014 at 1:53am Copy Link
TESS273 @Martin,

Thanks for reply.

The problem with touch screen is not icon but scrolling with one finger. It's not only your fault. All of the office products except MS Office 2007, 2013 are not working properly. ex) LibreOffice, Apache Open Office, SoftMaker Office, Kingsoft Office, IBM Lotus Sympony etc.

Please add touch screen functionality. Thanks.

Metta Zetty Can Eudora messages and settings (folders, filters, address book, personalities, stationery, etc.) all be imported into eM Client Professional 6?
Sep 29 2014 at 2:29am Copy Link

Metta Zetty Martin, you wrote: "you can run SoftMaker Office from a USB stick. However, you need to run a special installer that takes the regular version and copies it to the USB stick."

Is this "special installer" provided with the free download?

If not, where/how can it be obtained?
Sep 29 2014 at 2:34am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla Metta, the special installer is also included in the trial version and in FreeOffice. After a regular install, it appears in the Start > Programs > SoftMaker Office menu of Windows.

Does the standard version include "Softmaker eM client?
Sep 29 2014 at 4:39am Copy Link

BearPup I am a registered user of Softmaker 2012 and want to pass on my comments that may help others. The program works flawlessly, and I've never run into compatibility problems.

The biggest plus for me is that the ribbon bar allows you to choose either small or large icons, an important feature for those of us with visual impairments.

The biggest drawback is that you cannot select a specific location for backups to point to, i.e., I can't designate a separate Backup folder.

Overall, I've been a very satisfied user of the program for the last couple of years.

Sep 29 2014 at 6:28am Copy Link
Cary Adams @Martin... How does the standard version compare with Softmaker's FreeOffice. I'm pretty satisfied with the latter, and am curious about upgrading.

VLM Just a note ... This product is GREAT. But nothing is perfect, and there are two things about eM client that people might wish to know about beforehand, just to plan their email conversion.

q. When you import from Outlook (if that is your path), the order of the email accounts may be jumbled. So you MAY have to rearrange them a bit, and this is done using the same, manual, click-click-click method used in Outlook. If you have a lot of email accounts, this can be tedious and hard on the wrist.

2. More importantly, eM client does not import any email rules. If you are like me and have grown to depend upon a long and involved set of rules, then you will need to install eM client, THEN immeidately turn OFF automatic email downloading, THEN import from Outlook, THEN manually recreate all your rules, one by one, THEN resume automatic downloading (if that is what you typically do). If you don't do things in roughly this order, then eM client will begin automatically downloading emails without benefit of any rules. Depending upon the amount of email you receive, this can create some inconvenience.

These two limitations apply only during the conversion from Outlook to eM client. I thought some might wish to know about them.
Sep 29 2014 at 6:32am Copy Link
Roderick Nicolson Sorry for late reply, Metta Zetty. I confess I have not tried to install it into DropBox itself. My thoughts about this however are that all the DropBox folders are both on your computers and on the internet. If you were to install SoftOfficeto to a personal DropBox folder on your computer it might work. I think you might have to reinstall it on each computer though, so that any registry files would be taken care off. And you would need to make sure that each computer's DropBox folder has the same address as the original.

Or you could try to copy the USB version files and folders without unzipping them into a DropBox folder. You would probably have to ensure that the address for the files in DropBox (and that goes for each computer) is the same as on the USB stick - all except the drive letter, in this case, which can change on a USB stick anyway,
Too complicated to bother trying? Probably.

Sep 29 2014 at 12:52pm Copy Link
Martin Kotulla @H.H.: TextMaker, PlanMaker, and Presentations run from the USB stick, but eM Client and BasicMaker do not (due to the way they need to be integrated into Windows).

_*_ @H.H., eM Client at least has a very demanding DRM attached to it, and does not like to be interrupted at all.

I use Wise Care 365 and each time after I cleaned my system I had to reinsert the key and reactivate the program. I will say, I recently protected the eM Client folder and it no longer asks for the key time after time, after time, after...

I do not think it would play nice on a USB stick.

Metta Zetty Just now downloaded the free trial, and *immediately* after the installation finished, I received a malware warning from my antivirus program, WebRoot, alerting me to the following infection on my computer: M32.Malware.Gen.

Don't know if this was just a coincidence, but it is very suspicious! :-(

Fortunately, I've never had a problem like this with BDJ before now -- and fortunately WebRoot was able to remove the malware without any apparent problem.

However, I thought everyone who downloaded the free trial using the link on this page might want to know so you can search for and remove the malware if you find it.

Rich OBrien You'll be able to use the TextMaker word processor from SoftMaker Office 2012 for Windows as your primary word processor and remove Microsoft Word from your computer. TextMaker can open all Word files flawlessly.
TextMaker is perfect except it lacks a good Recent Fonts list at the top of its fonts list like the one in Microsoft Word. WPS Writer (Formerly Kingsoft) got it right. WhenTextMaker fixes its Recent Fonts list so that it purely lists Recent Fonts not font styles mixed with font sizes, TextMaker will be perfect. I can hardly wait.

Metta Zetty FYI: I just discovered that if you install and test the software using the free trial link above, you will have to UNINSTALL the software and reinstall the entire suite (using a different link) once you've purchased this offer.

Petr Hi, if I buy the Windows version, can I also get the Android version? Is there a cost for the Android version?

Will the Android version work on a Samsung Note 3? This is a smartphone with a 5.7" display. Or, is the Android version intended for use with a tablet having a 10" display or larger?

On Android, do you use your finger to navigate the menus (instead of a mouse?)
Sep 30 2014 at 1:42am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla Metta: Hmm, the way it is supposed to work is that when you run the full-version installer, it detects the trial and uninstalls it. But this keeps all user settings. Even just uninstalling the trial keeps the user settings.

jack hath Martin,

I like the MS Office Ribbon and own the 2007, 2010, and 2013 versions.

1. Will your 2014/2015 version have an Office-style Ribbon ?

2. you stated above that buyers of this outdated 2012 version will be receive a substantial Discount for upgrading to 2014/2015 version.

3. Please tell us what the DISCOUNT will be and how much the 2014/2015 versions will cost, so we know what we're getting for our money.

S G @Martin-

Like Jack Ho above, I desire the MS ribbon.

I personally do not like it that much, but need a common user interface when switching between machines that have MS Office and any other office program.

It is too difficult to remember multiple user interfaces.

Just my 2 cents...
Sep 30 2014 at 9:33am Copy Link
Martin Kotulla 1. eM Client and Outlook are simply different applications. Each gained new features in its latest release, but development of these programs is not marching in lockstep.

2. We are taking steps to take some of the ideas of ribbons into future releases of SoftMaker Office.

3. SoftMaker Office 2012 is not outdated. It is the currently shipping version, and this will stay so for several months. People that have a paid SoftMaker Office can always upgrade to the latest release, and these upgrades are offered at a substantial discount (around half price) over new purchases.

2. Will this version run on Windows 9?
3. I understand that one must install this in order to register it. What if I buy it now but don't install it for, say, a year when I buy a new laptop? (My current laptop's hard drive is almost full.)

Cary Adams @Stephen Cowen

1. The Pro version requires 166MB on my Win8-64 machine (eM Client contributes ~55MB to that total).

2. There is no Windows 9. Did you mean Windows 10? Of course no one is yet claiming full compatibility with an OS that is still under development, however I'm sure the long range plans will offer full compatibility in upcoming major versions.

3. In one year you can buy the new version. Impulse buying is unhealthy. :)

3) When trying to purchase Professional package from Israel, I'm going to pay 130 ILS instead of approx. 110 ILS I would pay using PayPal. Why? It's electronic download, no shipping costs. Is it possible to pay in USD? Is it possible to pay via Paypal for today's offer?

Metta Zetty FWIW, based on my recent experience with both LibreOffice and TextMaker, TM is:

Cary Adams I had been using Atlantis, LibreO and Softmaker FreeOffice, so when I had the opportunity to support this product, and get eM as a kicker, I took it.

Like Metta... I too found this more helpful that LibreO... particularly for rendering native docx files, and its handling of html. Atlantis is awesome except where tables are involved. For my $10/machine, Softmaker has quite a deal here.

But if LibreO, OpenO or whatever floats your boat, that's cool too, as we all have different needs.

BACKUP everything before opening in TextMaker!

Here's what happened. This is a copy of what I emailed SoftMaker:
I am using version 694.

I created an .rtf file, MyMovies.doc, using WordPad in Windows XP.

I opened the file in TextMaker and then closed the file WITHOUT saving it.
When I opened the file in WordPad it was GARBAGE.
The file will open in TextMaker, but in Wordpad it is GARBAGE.

I have attached a copy (good) of the Original file: MyMovies-1.rtf, and
a copy (bad), MyMovies.rtf, file that TextMaker destroyed.

Try opening both in WordPad.

Also, the TextMaker "FIND" function did not find a text string that is in this file.

You _did_ save the file. The saved file that you sent us is in TextMaker's own .tmd format, but with the file extension RTF (I don't know how this could happen, since you receive a warning when you go to File/Save As and add a file extension that does not match the file type).

To fix your problem, open the file again in TextMaker, call File/Save As and be sure to set the file type to RTF (*.rtf) -- it is not sufficient to just enter the RTF file extension.

1) I opened a "good" MyMovies-1.rtf file in TextMaker.
I used "Save As" to save the file. The "Save as type" entry showed "rtf."
I then opened the saved file in WordPad. It opened correctly.
2) I opened a "good" MyMovies-1.rtf file in TextMaker.
I used "File/Save" to save the file.
I then opened the saved file in WordPad. It opened correctly.
3) I opened a "good" MyMovies-1.rtf file in TextMaker.
I then saved the file using "CTRL-S"
I then opened the saved file in WordPad. It opened correctly.
4) I opened a "good" MyMovies-1.rtf file in TextMaker.
I used "Save As" to save the file and PURPOSELY changed the file type
to "tmd." The name of the file changed to "MyMovies.tmd."

I originally must have saved the MyMovies.rtf file using "Save As" or using "Save" or using "CTRL-S." However, I am sure that I did not change the file type. Some unusual ERROR/"GLITCH" must have occurred that saved the file as a "tmd" file but with the extension "rtf." I cannot cause this "ERROR/"GLITCH" to occur again.

This must have been a "one-time" software error. As I tell my wife, "Computers are like small children. They do not always do what they are supposed to do."
