What are people saying about Surfulater

Tony Setti Does it **find** items when you search using accented letters and such (diacritics), or is it still useless for that type of search? I know you can save items that use diacritics, but it's finding them again later that is critical...

K H I am wondering about the version. Is the version downloaded from here (by clicking the download button on Bits du Jour's site) the newest version? Or is this an older version that is being discounted? If I go to Surfulator's website and download the program from there, it would be ver 3. Would I still be able to purchase it for the deal price on Mar 4? I already know that I want to buy Surfulator but I understand there is a quite substantial upgrade price so I want to know what I am getting myself into $wise before installing anything.

Neville Franks Tony, Search for accented letters etc. is planned for a future release.

KH, The version here is an old version which is a mistake. It should be Version 3. I will get the BDJ folks to update it asap. The version on special is the latest V3 release.

Mandy Budge I bought the last version of this. Use it occasionally. Beware the unfortunate upgrade policy. You must pay 1/2 of the full rack retail to upgrade.... and since they've doubled the price since vers 2 - you are essentially paying full price again.

Neville Franks Mandy,
We provided free Surfulater upgrades for over 4 years, which we felt was fair and reasonable while the product was developing its core functionality required to meet our users needs. We have increased the price twice in the past 18 months and with the major release of Version 3 finally started charging for upgrades. Even the Version 3 upgrades were free for recent customers and discounted 50% otherwise, which is fairly standard upgrade pricing.
Soft As It Gets Pty Ltd - Mar 4 2009 at 7:11am Copy Link

Many Budge Yes, I bot 18 mos ago. You've doubled the price and want 50% for the upgrade. If you do that again, everyone who buys now will pay $79 for the next 'major' release.

Todays price $79 ... with interim price increases to $158 times 1/2 for the 'upgrade'.

At least new buyers are put on notice now. We were told you didn't charge for upgrades.
Mar 4 2009 at 7:45am Copy Link

Neville Franks Mandy,
We have no plans for further price increases. Also please note that we have increased the number of computers Surfulater can be installed on from 2 to 5 with the Version 3 Release, which we feel is generous and caters for people wanting to use Surfulater on their Home, Work, Notebook PC's etc. Version 3 also includes major new functionality, with more to come through the Version 3 series of releases.

We never said we would not charge for upgrades. In fact our FAQ Web page stated that if and when we did, they would be discounted 50%, so we were always completely up front. Some people however read this differently.

Our upgrade policy now is as follows:
"All updates to the current version number are free, while major upgrades are provided at a 50% discount for existing users."

Further information is at: http://www.surfulater.com/faq.html

I cannot find Mandy Budge on our customer database and can only assume that is not your real name.

Mitchel Haas I purchased Surfulater way back when it was version 1. I paid full price at the time, but still think it's a bargain even at full price. Many improvements have been made since then. It has always worked without any problems for me. It does what it says and more, and solid as a rock. There's plenty of uses for it, but I mainly use it for a knowledge tree.

David Powelstock Thanks, Neville. eSellerate just got back to me with this:

I'm sorry to hear about the problem purchasing. I do see a few failed order attempts in your name. It looks like something you were entering at the time of purchase tripped our security mechanisms and we started blocking all further attempts.
Since it looks like it may have been a case of a false positive, I'm going to go ahead and remove all of the flags in the system to allow you to try purchasing again. Unfortunately, you must wait a full 24 hours from receipt of this e-mail before the next attempt or the system will automatically flag you again. I apologize for the inconvenience. Perhaps the folks at Surfulator would be willing to extend the discount for you if you explain the circumstances here.
Sincerely,
Jeremy

Software Guy I purchase from bitsdujour frequently, and have had such a problem randomly, the last time causing me to miss priprinter, offered here recently. Can't seem to put my finger on the problem, but it does happen. When it does, we miss that software - it seems that we are just blocked from buying later that same day. Posted so that BDJ is aware.

Bill D. I searched your website extensively to find out if this application would work from a USB. It appears that it does not, but there have been some indications of "mayby someday, we're considering it" etc. These comments are a few years old. What is the current outlook on this? This product would be ideal for me if I could use it portably, even if at a higher cost licensing. Thanks.

Neville Franks Bill D.,
We have been working on USB Key software and have released our free ScreenClipper at www.screenclipper.com This was largely done to learn more about what is involved with creating and delivering non-installable applications. This a small step towards a USB Key version of Surfulater, however we still have several technical issues to resolve such as licensing and not leaving any footprints behind on the host PC. I can't give you any ETA, but can tell you this is something we are still interested in delivering.

Tazzie This program seems like it would be extremely useful to me, but I'm hesitant to even download it and try it out for this reason:  hardware footprint with only 5 activations.  Why only 5????  I just don't understand the reasoning behind this.  I often avoid the hardware footprint requirement for reasons often discussed on these boards, but the limited activations really floors me.  With reformats, crashes, new computers, etc., a person could easily use up the 5 all too soon.  I am not thrilled with the idea that I would feel pressured, consciously or not, to limit or put off needed reformats or such in order to avoid using up the 5 limit.

I am always talking/writing/posting, etc., about software that I love and find functional.  This includes software that has fair usage policies that are flexible and respectful of the needs of users.  I do NOT do so with software that has restrictive policies that are not user-friendly, and I know many others do so, also.  I wish software companies would see the light on this issue ... what you put out is what you get back (or not!).
Oct 12 2010 at 6:59pm Copy Link

Neville Franks Hi and thanks for your comments. The activation count is to enable a single Surfulater license to be installed on several PC's, which we feel is fair and quite generous. If you ever hit the limit or suspect that you may, all that you need to do is drop us an e-mail and we'll reset it as needed. Our many customers will attest to this process.

We also plan on adding a DeActivate capability which will make this process even simpler. And further down the track we have ideas of a better system again, which will completely remove activations.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that we do need to protect our works in some way and we feel the current system works pretty well for ourselves and our customers. Of course at the end of the day this is your decision.

Tazzie @Neville ... thanks so much for responding!  I am not insensitive to the concerns of software designers in protecting their intellectual property, and sympathize with the need to find a fair but effective means to do so.

I definitely appreciate the allowance to install Surfulater on more than one PC, which would be more than useful for me.  I also appreciate the willingness of your company to work with customers to address activation needs on an individual basis.

As soon as I read your response, I downloaded Surfulater, and plan to enjoy checking it out.  Again, thanks so much for the response and your positive approach!

LU Hello, Neville.

I too am interested in your software and think it would be quite useful for many people.

I see on your site, the upgrades to major versions are 50% off but here it states that an upgrade to the next version would be free.  Is this free upgrade to the next version only valid here and is it accurate?  Could this be an indication that you will be soon releasing a new major upgrade?

Thanks

Paul User Does Surfulator support Firefox 4 Beta. If not can you estimate when a version with Firefox 4 support will be available?
Oct 18 2010 at 12:09am Copy Link

Neville Franks Hi LU, the current release is Version 3.30.0.0. Version 3.40 will be out shortly. Purchasing any V3 release will give you all V3.x releases for free. So you will only need to look at purchasing an upgrade when V4 is released, as explained on our http://www.surfulater.com/faq/ V4 is some way off, we don't have a date set for it yet. BDJ customers are no different to any other customers in this and all respects. I hope that helps. Neville

Mike B As a user of Surfulater, I can attest to a few things:

  - support is excellent
  - the activation scheme isn't too much of a pain (in general, I'm not a fan of them, but I do sometimes purchase software that uses them). While I have been bitten once by being unable to activate due to a system change, an email got that reset pretty quickly.
  - even if you find yourself in a situation where a new install won't activate (or a system change causes deactivation), your data is still accessible. Surfulater goes into a 'reader mode' in this situation. So while you do lose functionality until you get support to straighten things out, you are not locked out of your information.

Keith Norton The program seems very useful, but the activation process is very strange. Typing in the serial # does not work. One must copy the ENTIRE email or purchase webpage to "automagically" activate the program. My Outlook email would not work - maybe Outlook strips something out of the coding. The confirmation web-page finally worked, so don't close it until you have activated the software. I have saved the webpage just in case I need it in the future (I hope whatever coding is needed is still in there). Customer service for my activation problem was excellent, but the process still seems wierd.

Neville Franks Michael, Thanks for your comment. I've always said that support is part and parcel of the product people buy. It isn't just the software. Similarly comprehensive documentation is equally important. We do our best to cover all bases.

And thanks to everyone taking up today's BDJ special. Much appreicated as always.

Neville Franks Hi Keith, It is quite rare for people to have trouble activatiing a new license. I'm really not sure why copying the e-mail content in Outlook didn't work. If you e-mail me the version of Outlook you are using and I have that version I can try it.

Typing in the license details will definitely work, however this is not a good idea, as it is too easy to make a mistake with the registration code.

JesusInsideMe URGENT COMMENT: I bought this software here, it has a really excellent features (I'm sure of that), BUT, after working 7 days and having like almost 10 works in it, one day surprisingly all my pics went away!! and I can't recover it for myself, just developer can TRY to fix it's database (for my work I had almost 1.6GB), so, if you want take the risk of lose everything in a moment go ahead and give a chance to this software, if not, make how I did it, get a similar software that save all pics in windows folder, so, there is not any risk of losing nothing, this software was published here (I lost it's offer! :( ), but I hope BitsDuJour think in make a new offer for it (ScreenSteps), OOooooops I forgot to mention that Surfulater developer is very honest regarding he did a very fast money refund to me. God bless you fellows, bye.

Bill User The last time I experimented with Surfulater, I was very disappointed by its handling of foreign-language characters (UTF-8 and other accented characters). How well does the latest version handle accented characters in searches in particular? A search function that can't handle multilingual criteria is effectively crippled.

Thanks!

Neville Franks @SoftCollector, We have no specific schedule for a V4 release at this time. It certainly won't be any time soon.

@Bill, to resolve the foreign-language character search issue requires a quite major reworking and redevelopment of parts of Surfulater. Unfortunately this was a mistake in our original implementation and is still present.

There is no limit to the number of attached files. The Surfulater database is limited to 2GB. I doubt whether you'd want to have a database this big though, but you can.

Attached PDF files are not indexed.

Nico Westerdale @Presiding, Scrapbook simply saves snippets. Surfulator allows you supreme management and organisation of web content, allowing tagging, filtering, searching. Basically it allows you to build a huge knowledge library and use it in a million ways. Take a look at the screenshots, you can see it's very fully featured.

Neville Franks I've not looked at Scrapbook for some time. That said some points are:
- Works in Chrome, Firefox & IE. (Not tied to a browser)
- Organize by Folders and Tags.
- Filter the tree view by folder, tag or article.
- Full text search with wildcards.
- Capture content from any Windows app.
- Append content to articles from any Windows App.
- Attach files to articles.
- Cross reference articles.
- All content kept in a database which is easily moved amongst PC's.
- View all articles in a Folder at once.
- Re-order article fields.
- Link to Surfulater articles from Word and other application files.
- Capture Screen shots.
- .....

Mark S. Questions:

Why do all the Surfulater forums end in December 2010? Since I find that forums are often your best source of support.

Is the programmer still actively involved? It seems like blog entries are infrequent, and the web page still has info from 2007. I also note that some fixes occurred by rolling back features.

In effect, I'm wondering if Surfulater is on the verge of being orphaned?

Thanks!

Neville Franks Hi Mark S, The original forums have been replaced by our new Support Center http://help.surfulater.com which which we feel lets us deliver even better support to our users. See also: http://www.surfulater.com...t-support/

I am the developer of Surfulater and very much still actively involved. I have not been blogging much lately because I have been busy on a new project and haven't had much to say on the Surfulater front.

We had to remove one specific feature because we were unable to completely resolve a problem it caused. We felt this was better than keeping it and causing some uses angst.

If you care to let me know what web page has info from 2007 I can check this and update same if necessary.

I am not actively working on Surfulater at present as I am working on some new projects.

Neville Franks Hi Marco,
I agree it would be great if Surfulater could automagically sync it's databases across PC's and this is something we'd like to see, however it is quite a complex task and not one we've tackled as yet.

There are various ways you can sync the databases by copying them. For example you could use a remote backup service, a USB stick or Sync software like SFFS.

VLM Thanks Neville for that great response. I can see that Sufrulator outshines Scrapbook in many ways.

Actually, I was hoping that would be the case, as I tried and abandoned Scrapbook long ago. What I do now, is simply PDF the pages I wish to retain. This enables me to store them right alongside other documents relevant to a project, research topic, or the like. The PDFs are of course searchable, as the the tree view. In a good file manager (DOpus, for example) there are tags and what not. Some of the other features, such as appending, attaching, and the like may be superior in Surfulater. But I also find benefit in having everything in one place. It has never made sense to me to organize web content using a mechanism independent of all the other content I have.

I would not claim that my point of view is "correct", there is no such thing here. Still, it does make sense to me.

Thinking about this one ....

Neville Franks @The Presiding Emissary for Vibrant Living Ministries and Successors

Surfulater enables you to edit captured content, add notes, add cross references between articles, link from external documents (Word/PDF etc.) to Surfulater articles, tag articles etc. You can also capture content from an Windows app and either create new articles or append the content to existing articles. You can also capture screen shots.

So it has various ways to capture information, edit it, then organize and structure it and most importantly find it again. The key is to turn information into readily accessible knowledge.

JesusInsideMe In Oct/18/2010 (BitsDuJour Offer) I bought this app license, I used daily during 28 DAYS until a fatal error happened, and I LOST ALL the info I had in this app, because this app works using an isolated database that doesn't give the option to recover nothing if it's corrupted, whereas all apps are susceptible to have errors, it is better do not have this kind of storage data in our apps (that's why now I use ''Clarify'' and ''StepShot'), so, definitively I CAN'T RECOMMEND IT. On the other hand, I must say that they honored the Refund commitment, fulfilling it correctly. God bless you.

We strongly encourage users to backup all data in all applications they use as part of their daily backup regime. That is the only guarantee of reliably recovering from corruption problems, hard drive issues etc.

Amit If i can get a software that can simply do this - when i activate it it starts storing all the web pages i surf - and in these 2 browsers mainly - IE and firefox, would be very fine. Or atleast one browser only.

Means i should not be clicking and telling the software to record or save the info - each time i visit a good site - but it should be time based ie. when i activate the green button it starts recording, and when i tclick the red button (or tell it to stop recording) it stops recording.

Does surfulator or any other software does this ?

Garrett Goyette Hi, i can see now that it can import bookmarks, but i would love if it could import TAGs as well, that would be Heaven, easier and more ubiquitous than your internal links. wordpress and the whole web has Tags, gmail has labels, bookmarks and folders are qreat and necessary up to a point, but then Tag'ing allows multiple folder assignment and easy to find stuff at a glance.

I just want to be able to click separately or " click all in a category" to assign Tags and eliminate a lot of Typing

think of adding that in a wish list.

Neville Franks @Lupke Brother The text on the CaptureSaver web site is close to a word for word copy of our previous Surfulater Web site. The Testimonials they used were copies of our testimonials. Originally they didn't even bother changing the users names. Now they appear to be nameless, at least on the home page. The other testimonials only use a first name and I would bet are mostly made up.

The product itself uses similar terms to Surfulater: "My Knowledge Base", "Knowledge Tree" etc.

As I said earlier his earlier hosting company agreed to shut his site down based on the detailed information I provided. A few weeks later he re-appeared on a different hosting company. I gave up about then, life is too short to worry about folks like this.

"Hi,
In my heart, Surfulater is a fine software and Neville Franks is worthy of respect. Be paid close attention to by our competitor, I'm happy that our software is strong too.
CaptureSaver's forerunner is eNotebook which started on 2001. GoldGingko Inc was founded in 2006 and we launched the new software CaptureSaver. Having the same function with Surfulater, It is unavoidable there is repetition on some text.
But in Neville Franks's comments, there are some of the personal attacks aimed at GoldGingko. I am very disappointed for his behavior."

Neville Franks @R A The current version of Surfulater is ideal in your situation as it saves all captured content to a database on your local PC so you can view/edit it at any time without an Internet connection.

Further the locally installed version of the Next-Gen Surfulater will do the same thing, storing all content locally. You can think of this as your own personal cloud with most of the same benefits as using a hosted cloud solution. See the blog article http://blog.surfulater.co...oud-or-not for more on this.

J S Dear Neville Franks, I was just wondering how Surfulater compares to a program called CaptureSaver by GoldGingko dot com.

To the untrained eye such as mine, both programs appear to do similar things (But perhaps I have got this wrong) and both appear to be able to save *.mht/*.mhtml web archive files.

Perhaps the one thing I can find that CaptureSaver appears to offer (which I havn't found yet with Surfulater) is that one of their purchase options includes free upgrades for the life of the program (Lifetime licensing with major upgrades).

I would appreciate any thoughts you might have.

Mark Johnson I have read through the surfulater blog postings on the future of Surfulater. There is nothing there that gives a definite answer, basically just "maybe I will do this" types of things.

However, it sounds like the most likely future is for the current version to be dead (no more major updates) and a totally new version to be cloud-based but with a local backup database for when cloud access is not available. Then when the cloud is available, the local databases will synchronize with the cloud (and there will be sync failures / merge conflicts to deal with when the same area changes on two different PCs).

I am guessing the cloud in this future Surfulater will be under your control, and not the user's control. In other words, the user will have to pay a monthly or annual subscription for the future version of Surfulater.

It also sounds like this future Surfulater will not have a navigation tree, but will instead rely on tags or something similar that the user will have to use to tie notes together. This basically would make Surfulater similar to older versions of Evernote, and kill one of the most-used features of the current Surfulater. One of the reasons I don't use Evernote more than I do is because of its pathetic note organization features (one level of child folders, and tags. Tags are a REALLY CRAPPY way to organize notes), so if Surfulater's future is similar to Evernote's current solution, no thanks.

Can you comment on the future of the current Surfulater? I am wary of purchasing it and putting gigabytes of data in it, only to find out my database won't work in the new version of Surfulater (or won't have the tree I rely on). I'm also not comfortable paying a monthly or annual subscription fee to get at my data.

Thanks!

J. Moreno @Mark Johnson - I share some of your apprehensiveness about the cloud, though I have confidence that Neville won't do anything that will alienate his large current customer base (at least, I hope not!). However, I'm MUCH more enthusiastic than you are about tags. I think anyone who has used bookmark managers like Powermarks or Linkman knows the ease and efficiency of keywords, and keywords are pretty much the same as tags. As a former user of Powermarks and a present user of Linkman, I am continually amazed at how fast I can locate any of my thousands of bookmarks--usually in a second or two. So, even though I use and like Surfulater's navigation tree, I suspect I won't miss it if tags in the Next Gen version work as well as keywords have in Linkman.

Dr Andus I've been using Surfulater for my PhD research for many years, as my main database for capturing snippets or entire webpages. My main database is massive but thanks to the hierarchical tree organisation and the Filter search bar it is very easy and quick to find things. But the key for me is the ease of capturing information. 1) highlight the text, 2) right-click, 3) select “Surfulater: Add new article” and that's it. It will be saved in the tree hierarchy in a folder. I highly recommend it.

Neville Franks @exjoburger99 You would have received an e-mail with your license details if it went through. If you let me know your name I can check.

Apologies for the slow response but we are on different sides of the planet.

Neville Franks @J S GodGinko have copied concepts and terms from Surfulater and copied content from our Help documentation and our Web site. They are blatantly dishonest and have no credibility.

We have successfully had their Web site shut down in the past and BDJ will not sell their products.

Neville Franks @Mark Johnson Thanks for your post. You are correct that we are moving all development to the new Next-Gen version of Surfulater.

We have listened to our customers wants and needs over the past 5 years as Surfulater has evolved and it was time to start over so we can deliver a product that will provide the capabilities they've asked for into the future. Surfulater as is will continue to be maintained.

For Surfulater Next-gen we plan to offer two products. One will be locally installed on your PC or LAN much as the current Surfulater is. The database will be stored locally on your PC and no 'cloud' use will be necessary. If you want to synchronize this to the cloud this will be an option. This would be a one off purchase with paid upgrades.

The second option will be software running on our server (or cloud if you like) and the database also stored on our server, with the ability to download backups. This would be an annual subscription. My blog posts and comments provide more information.

The hierarchical folder tree has been removed from SUL-Next-Gen and replaced by a Hierarchical Tags tree. Articles can have any number of tags and tags can be nested to any depth. In essence this does what the current folder tree does, but IMO far better. And work-flow is greatly simplified.

I hope that answers everything.

Neville Franks @Michelle Bereza Surfulater captures the entire web page, regardless of what is currently visible in your browser window.

Neville Franks @Mark Johnson - I missed seeing your second post. Yes you add (hierarchcical) tags directly into articles and they determine the places in the tree where articles reside.

As for migration my thoughts are that the current folder tree will be converted into hierarchical tags. I think that will work quite well. Of course there will be full tags editing capabilities as well as hierarchy reorganization.

Michelle Bereza Trying trial surf. Captured an ebay auction page with text and pics using all surf methods. Each time, the ebay listing is not shown, rather indicated as an attachment. Clicking the attachment takes me to the Ebay url with all info displayed. Prblem is all this information will be deleted soon after auction ends. I want to do a screen print of that auction listing while employing your wonderful organizing functions.

How do I do that? thanks (again)

Neville Franks @Michelle Bereza When you use Surfulater: Add Artilce plus Page the web page is downloaded and stored in the Surfulater Database which you can subsequently access via. the Article's Attachment link.

This opens the copy of the page that Surfulater downloaded in your default Web Browser. This permanent copy will not change regardless of what the happens with the original page. And it can be accessed without an Internet connection.

To access the original source web page click on the Reference field link.

You can also use Surfulater's Edit | New Article from Screen Clip to create an image of content you select, which also be of interest.

J S Hi Neville and many thanks for the advice about CaptureSaver and those naughty people who made it. I do like the idea of their purchase option that includes upgrades for the life of the product, but I'll hopefully write more on that subject after todays promotion has expired.

With this Next Gen version of Surfulater that You're planning, I'm assuming You'll want to release it within the next 6 months to a year:

Q1. Is there any upgrade path for people who purchase today's version or haven't you thought that far ahead yet?

Q2. Will the current version be ongoing or does development cease once Next-Gen is up and away?

Neville Franks J S We don't have any release date at this time. There will be an upgrade path of some sort. Surfulater development, other than maintenance has largely ended as I explained in an earlier reply, with all development focused on Next-Gen.

Neville Franks @Jesus InsideMe We have now moved to a server grade database. The only way you could loose everything is if you weren't doing regular backups.

CL I apologize in advance if this topic has been discussed before. I have not have the time to do a complete read of the comments or do a test drive of the program. I understand that the software captures information and webpages. In capturing a web page with embedded links, are the links also captures for later offline browsing? Thanks.

Jim McGowan Since This version of Surfulater will be abandoned after the new "in the cloud" subscription model is released, will people who purchased this version be upgraded to the new version with a "free" subscription for a period of time based on when they purchased?

Or will they be starting out fresh and have to immediately re-purchase / subscribe to the new model?

Thank you.

Jim

VLM A variation on Jim McGowan;s question: for those of us who do not wish to be in the clouds, ever, will there be a final non-cloud version?

Eddie Tex Having read through the comments, I just wanted to say I am highly impressed by the responsiveness and honesty of Neville Franks regarding his product. Without having even tried it myself, I'm tempted to purchase this because of him.

Having said that, I do want to ask how much longer will the offline version be maintained following the release of the web version? Will that maintenance include ongoing browser support for the major Windows-based browsers (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, IE)?

I don't mind paying $40 for a great product with a great developer, but I do want some level of confidence that it will remain functional for a certain period of time.

Neville Franks @Chong Lee Surfulater captures the current page in full, but does not capture pages linked to the current page. You would need to open those pages and capture the ones you want. Capturing all pages linked to a page would sometimes be useful, but doesn't fit a typical use case as you would likely end up with pages which were not relevant, which would waste space and time.

Apologies for the delay replying but it is the start of our day here in Australia now.

Neville Franks @Jim McGowan, good question and not one I've seriously thought through at this time. That said there is no doubt we'd look after existing customers in some way.

@VLM We are planning a non-cloud as well as cloud version. You can read more about this on our blog: http://blog.surfulater.com/

Neville Franks @Eddie Tex Thanks for your generous words. Browser vendors tend to make life a bit difficult for Extension Developers, as you are no doubt aware. That said I'd like to think our Surfulater Browser Extensions will continue to work for quite some time. If that's not the case we would certainly endeavour to do whatever work was necessary to get them working again, as we have done in the past.

And FYI development of the Web version is going well, however it is a big project and is still quite some way away.

Neville Franks @VLM Your second post was hidden and I've only just noticed it.

I haven't looked at Scrapbook in quite some time, however I'm sure you will find Surfulater's capabilities for capturing, annotating, cross-referencing, organizing and locating information are far better suited to doing comprehensive and efficient research. Surfulater isn't tied to just one specific Browser and uses a real database for storing content. And more... :-)

Eddie Tex Thanks Neville. I certainly would not expect indefinite maintenance support for the major browsers. That would not be sustainable for you as a developer, but I am convinced that what you say is true... that you would endeavor to make it work, at least for a certain period of time following the release of the next version. I'm also encouraged that you are planning a non-cloud version in the next release. Keep up the great work!

Brian H Hi- Question- I understand that Surfulater does not automatically download documents that are linked to the main page being capture, but does it have the ability to keep these links "active" when saving the main document for archiving- meaning that I could later (if I so choose) click on a link in the main, archived document, and be taken to that page (via my default web browser)? Just wondering if this option is available. Thanks. -Brian

Neville Franks @Brian H. Yes all links on pages saved permanently in Surfulater will open those pages in your Web Browser, assuming they still exist on the web of course.

VLM Neville Franks - Thank you for your responses.

Regarding Scrapbook, I believe it does (can) capture linked pages. That is a big advantage, at least for some users. Your firm might wish to take a look at this aspect of Scrapbook's functionality and think about what might be done to enhance Surfulater in this regard. Just a suggestion.

Alino Miceli This is ridiculous. Why is it so complicated to buy? The link http://store.esellerate.n...&at=100001 is not just working. Too complicated. I give up.

Neville Franks @Alino My only thought right now is whether there is some problem with the Domain name resolution from your location to eSellerate.net who is our eCommerce provider. What country are you located in?

eb235 Same problem for me : blank screen 5 hours ago and now a screen typical of domains awaiting renewal.
Curiously 5 hours ago I was in another (European) country. I can also testify that the link was active during the first day of the promotion.
My own thought is : has the store link been renewed for the second day of the promotion ?
I'll try to contact Neville Franks directly but later (time to get some sleep !)

Neville Franks @eb235 Thanks for your feedback. There has been no change to the link. It appears to be a Domain Name Resolution issue for some folks in Europe. I have reported this to our eCommerce provider eSellerate and am awaiting their response.

Neville Franks @Alino. @eb235 I have received a reply from our eCommerce provider as follows:

"There are external domain name issues intermittently impacting some of Digital River’s customer stores. This may be interrupting your e-commerce or payments service. This is not a security related issue. This is our highest priority, and our IT staff is working diligently to implement a fix.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience, and we will keep you posted on our efforts toward a solution. "

All I can suggest is to keep trying. If you are unable to get the special before it runs out contact me directly and I'll help you out.

J S G'day Nev,

Well Alino aint the only one 'avin problems.

I'm using Firefox 19.0.2 and have made another purchase from Bitsdujour within the last Hour successfully.

Tried the link from this promotion and for the first time ever my full licensed AdMuncher says the purchase screen (or whatever the links goes directly too) has been Munched.

So i disabled AdMuncher and tried again and this time although 99% of the window is white there is a small Grey progress bar in the top left corner of the window that sits there scrolling left to right for approx 30 seconds and then NUTH'iN just a Blank/White window.

I have just tried the other BdJ promotion pages as well as their purchase links and they're all working.

I have no idea what is wrong but unless I can get this to work I won't be able to make my purchase today.

I just noticed Neville Franks comments to @eb235 about Domain Name Resolution issue and some folks in Europe.

Well I'm in the land down under and something weird is happening to me via OPTUS cable.

I'm about to go off to Hospital for a pre-arranged medical procedure and I'm not going to be back home (if everything goes according to plan) before 6pm BrisVegaz time, so it looks as though I'm going to miss out, as the link or page or something beyond my control is DEFiNiTELY NOT WORKiNG.
