Sep 4 2014 at 7:04am Copy Link

Cary Adams @Kenneth Floyd... "2 cores" means that this edition, unlike the Pro edition, is capable of using 2 CPU cores of a multi-core processor simultaneously. This enables significantly reduced processing time, particularly helpful for converting large documents or batches of documents.

Ela S. Is ABBYY Screenshot Reader included in this program version?

Just for those who don't know this best ever screen shot program with excellent OCR technology, the description can be find here:

http://www.abbyy.com/screenshot_reader/

Just make a screenshot of every text picture (locked PDF, text passage, text image, locked website etc), and this tiny program translate it into readable text, regardless of the language.

HJ B 1. Is there anywhere a comparison of the reliability of ABBY OCR as compared to Acrobat PRO and Omnipage Ultimate?

2. I do not see here the opportunity to road test the product. The ABBY web site permits one to apply for a test version. I am reluctant to grab a one-day deal, if there is no opportunity to test it.

ABBYY FineReader 12 Corporate offers two versions: dual core or quad core. This promotion focuses on the dual core version.

ABBYY provides 30-day trials of all of its products, which can be downloaded from the website.

Comparisons of FineReader 12 against Adobe Acrobat and Nuance Omni Page have been conducted by various third parties. Buyers Laboratories has done the most recent.

disenchanted I have and use Abbyy fine reader pro and prefer it over Nuance, Read-iris and a few others I have tried.
I have a few questions:

1. I would like to know how this 2 core compares in speed to the Abbyy finereader Pro version?

2. How much of the 2 core program actually utilizes 2 cores?
and would an end user see a huge performance increase of say, 150% or 200% or ??? when comparing it to the Pro version?

3. Does this program utilize any of the GPU as well as the CPU?
a. If so, what type of mid to high range video card would be needed?

It sounds like a great offer but the best I have for a PC is just an i7-4770k
But it sounds like I'd need a motherboard with two i7 CPUs to really get the most out of this software app.

You said: "ABBYY provides 30-day trials of all of its products, which can be downloaded from the website. "

I went to the website 12 hours ago, and all I could find was two different places where I could request a trial copy. I made the request, and then made it again an hour later. In each instance, the site confirmed receipt of my request and said a download link would be sent to me. As of this moment I have not had a reply with a download link,

I suspect that this product would be what would meet my needs; however, I will not purchase a product that I cannot test, unless the terms of purchase give a right of return.

ABBYY @disenchanted

Thank you for using our products. I tried to provide answers to your questions:

1. Both FineReader Professional and Corporate support multi-core processors. It means that FineReader effectively uses processor resources to speed up recognition process.
2-core limitation is related only to batch conversion mode included to Corporate version in separate application named Hot Folder. So you won't see the difference in Pro and Corporate versions performance.

2. FineReader (both Professional and Corporate versions) provides multi-processes scalable architecture that effectively uses almost all cores of your n-core processor.
Batch conversion is limited to use only 2-cores.

3. No, FineReader uses only CPU, not GPU.

which the Fine Reader 15 can be installed and used according to its system
requirements) owned by You. You may not use the Fine Reader 15 on both
Computers simultaneously. At any given time, You may either use the

SoftCollector Unfortunately, there seems to be little difference between version 14, which I bought a few months back, and the new version 15. I have installed a trial and used it for a few days and I did not see any difference in function or look. My feeling was that version 15 is an incremental update of version 14 (rather than a substantial upgrade), and ABBYY just decided to sell it as a different version number and make some profit. I hope the ABBYY representative can persuade me otherwise and change my mind on this.

Oct 18 2019 at 1:47am Copy Link

ABBYY Hello @SoftCollector !

Thank you for using our products! First of all you should know that we will continue to support Fine Reader 14 so you don't have to change it for a new version in order to keep getting updates. Of course it won't get the same features as Fine Reader 15 has. Few words about it:

The main changes in Fine Reader 15 were made in terms of work with PDF files. Mostly about editing, formatting and scanning. Also Fine Reader 15 had a major update in OCR technology. New options have been added to customize Fine Reader settings during deployment using Group Policy Objects.

Of course this is not all. Full list of changes you can see here: https://www.abbyy.com/med...nglish.pdf

Emil Kucera Hello,
I have been a happy user since many versions ago. What would be the best reasons to upgrade from ver. 14 to 15 (standard to standard) ? The website does not quite show the differences.
Edit 2020-02-11 18:40 :
I found the reference to changes in the older conversations. It looks like the major advantage of the new version is only available in Corporate, pity. I will still upgrade, though, if I can manage to get the discounted price; a few days ago that did not work for me. Will return and report.
Edit 2020-02-11 19:57 Purchase and installation proceeded without a hitch. Thanks!

ABBYY Hello @Joe M.

If you purchased Standard version of a product as an individual (not a company) you can use it for two devices on condition that one of these devices is a laptop. But there might be other conditions like your Country, Serial number of a product etc. It would be better for you to contact our support team and clarify these questions. They might also connect you with your sales team in order to get a personal offer if needed.

About the upgrade version - this would work only on a condition you have a separate version of Fine Reader 14 or lower.

A User I just noticed on your website that the Corporate version is listed as being limited to 5000 pages of OCR per month for the HotFolder feature, that is, for the automated batch processing of folders of documents.

1] First of all, this is a very serious limitation. The primary reason to purchase the Corporate version is the "batch" feature, which enables the user to process whole folders of scanned documents at one time. Given the affordability of scanners with automatic document feeders, these days even personal users have tens of thousands of pages to process with OCR. A limitation of 5000 pages for an entire month is simply not reasonable.

2] Abbyy Finereader Corporate 11 had no such limitation. The introduction of a new 5000-page limitation is truly a downgrade, and gives good reason to stick with version 11.

3] The description of Abbyy Findereader Corporate here on the BDJ indicates nothing about a 5000 page limitation. It says simply "any files placed there are automatically retrieved and converted by ABBYY FineReader Corporate". If this is in fact limited to 5000 pages, then that should be stated up front; otherwise the description here is terribly misleading.

Please clarify and advise.

Dec 27 2020 at 10:39am Copy Link

0

ATx @A User: I took a look on ABBYY site and I found following:
In case of huge number of documents to process in automation based on HotFolder users need FineReader Server. It has no limits and seems to have corporate prices.

Dec 27 2020 at 3:09pm Copy Link

0

A User @ATx: Thanks for your follow-up. But actually, I just checked in with my local distributor, who indicated that the FineReader Server would cost nearly 8 times as much as FineReader Corporate, and would still be limited to 100,000 pages per year - which comes out to 8333 pages per month. So it is nearly 8 times the cost for not even double the capacity! In such a case, it would be preferable to purchase 2 separate Corporate licenses, rather than a single FineReader Server license - it would provide more capacity for less cost.

We could really use some clarification here from Abbyy.
Abbyy reps - please advise.

Gary User looking at the website it appears this program will only process 5,000 pages per month. I often get a pdf or word documents in excess of 5,000 pages that need to be ocr and tagged. I presently use Acrobat Pro desktop. No page limitations whatsoever. Why would a program have a 5,000/moth pager limit? I'd blow through that in just one day.
