What are people saying about AutoDialogs

Jerzy FromPoland Is it works with windows 7 32/64bit?

Frank Stephens There are already a number of ways to do this on Vista and higher. Also, there's AnVir task manager (even the free version), which does this automatically.

Alexander Bednyakov Jerzy, yes, it does.

Robert Bull Suppose you want to print a number of, say, PDFs. You have to open the folder dialog each time, find the file you want, open it. Does AutoDialogs remember the last file you were on, so you can just move down one? For repeated operations, this would be useful.
Feb 16 2010 at 8:57am Copy Link

Alexander Bednyakov It has the list of the recently-used folders. So, you can make just two clicks to get to the folder where you were the last time.

Max Murkel AD seems to be a nice little helper. However, I'd prefer to open the folder in my file manager, not in that piece of crap called Windows Explorer. Any chance?

Alexander Bednyakov What file manager do you use? We will try to add support for it, but we cannot promise 100%.

Max Murkel I use Total Commander and Directory Opus (latest versions).
Thanks!

Dick OZ This fantastic little gem stops you crawling through directories and sub directories to find a file to open or a directory for saving. Just define the shortcut once and the directory is available.
Yes you could use recently opened, but this is for your definition of recent: my-often-used ...
Would not know how to work without it.

B Adams I am testing it out on Vista 32bit (no admin needed as I turned that stuff off long ago) and it works. Having some problems setting Hotkeys...I've gotten a few installed (don't know why it is taking several attempts before it accepts my input). The Hot Keys that I've got installed so far make this REALLY stand out for me. I've read your easy little tutorial and I see there are a key other things I will be able to do...some I don't understand quite yet what they mean. I have several programs that are similar, but yours seems to be handier, has some interesting/useful, new-to-me features and for this deal you are offering, I must own it. I like how you answer people so quickly and are so helpful on your forum, too.

Alexander Bednyakov We just added support for these two file managers to AutoDialogs. You may download the new 2.6 version from MetaProducts Web site.

Greg Brown I purchased this the last time around and can definitely recommend it.  It saves a ton of time navigating to the desired folder when saving/opening various files. The only odd thing I've noted is that once in a while the AutoDialogs folder doesn't appear when I attempt to open or save a file. If I try a second time, it's there.  However, this is a rare and minor problem, and I still find this program incredibly useful.

General Question Would a single user having a PC and a laptop be forced to buy 2 copies?
Sep 6 2010 at 5:37pm Copy Link

Jeff Johnston Q. Does this handle only Folders, or Files & Folders [like the old File-Ex v3.xx which only handled up to Win95 thru Windows XP, or even the excellent "OpenSave Dialog Tracker" (which was part of the now extinct Novatix's ExplorerPlus file manager) that placed extra boxes in the top right-hand corner of a Dialog Box & ALSO allowed RESIZING of all dialog boxes]?

Q. Is there any current product that allows access to Previously Accessed Files & Folders ?
Sep 6 2010 at 5:39pm Copy Link
0
Jeff Johnston On the website there is no mention of AutoDialogs being able to work with Windows 7 (or 2008) and I quote: "Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista"

Q. Is this product also Windows 7 (and server 2008) capable or compliant?

Q. Is any work being done to make a future version work with Files & Folders?
Sep 6 2010 at 5:58pm Copy Link

Oleg Chernavin Jeff,

1. It handles folders, but it is also possible to specify files or extension masks. I personally use *.inc filter very often.

2. It lists some previously accessed folders. We are working to make this feature better - to get recent folders from all used Open/Save dialogs.

3. Yes, we tested it on Windows 7, 32- and 64-bit.

4. Please try to use it and let us know what exactly you want to improve regarding files support.

General Question2 Still trying to get an answer on the laptop & pc requires 1 or 2 licenses.  Lots of people have a laptop in addition to the main pc so I'm hoping there's some leniency for a single user.
Sep 7 2010 at 3:38am Copy Link
0
Oleg Chernavin Yes, the license is to a single user. So, if you install it to both your own laptop and home PC and use them alone, there is no violation to the license.

Stephane M Just tried it and seems working fine on my XP.
I will try it on my Win 7 x64 soon.

I also faced the issue mentionned by Greg Brown though.
Sometimes the AutoDialogs icon does not appear in the open/save dialog or disappear after navigating through folders and it was not so rare for me.

Thanks.

Oleg Chernavin OK. We will test this carefully. I myself use AutoDialogs on Win XP. However I set hotkeys for most of my folders, so I may not notice the icon presence sometimes.

Also, if the icon is missing in the dialog, you may still use the icon in tray - click it, choose the folder and it will affect the currently open Open/Save dialog.

Pedro Laurent I agree with Sean Wilson how can a company like MetaProducts Corporation doesn't have a Paypal payment setup? It's hard for me to understand the reason for this... Paypal is widely use world wide.

Roger Thomasson @ Pedro The paypal issue has been resolved.  Please refer to Lena's response above.

DrTeeth In the EC, the VAT (sales tax) rate is meant to be that of the *customer's* country AIUI*. In my case that is 17.5%. When I tried to purchase, 19% was added. This happens too often and will cause me to reconsider buying. * I have checked and I am correct, "Non-EU suppliers will be required to register with a VAT authority in any one Member State of their choice, and to levy VAT at the rate applicable in the Member State where the customer was resident ."
Sep 9 2010 at 10:10am Copy Link

Roger Thomasson @ Guy VAT is determined by the payment processor, not the publisher.  Unfortunately neither Bits du Jour nor MetaProducts have any control over this fee.  I'm guessing the extra 1.5% is what Avangate (or Paypal) takes for processing the international sale. -r
BitsDuJour Admin - Sep 9 2010 at 10:33am Copy Link

Oleg Chernavin Yes, sorry for all these fees and taxes, but we cannot force governments to avoid them.
Sep 9 2010 at 10:43am Copy Link

DrTeeth @ Roger
The VAT rate was 19% when I tried to purchase. The rate is set by the EU, the payment processor may either be in error or charge what could be the maximum rate to make their life easier. I am sure that the combined muscle of BDJ and the software publishers could bring publicity to bear on this issue ;-)...a resolution can only result in an increase in sales.

@ Oleg
I am not trying to avoid paying the tax, I am trying to avoid paying more than I am legally obliged to. It all adds up. Perhaps you could contact the payment processor or even switch to one that can process the sales tax correctly.

Roger Thomasson @ Guy Your concern is noted, but as far as this promotion is concerned the VAT charge is not going to change :-) Have you tried the PayPal option?  Perhaps it is a more reasonable charge. Further discussion of VAT should be taken to the forums -- let's leave this board clear for specific questions related to AutoDialogs. Thanks! -r

Stephane M I just tried it on Vista x64 and it takes around 20 secs to change the folder each time I click on a folder in the AutoDialogs menu.

20 secs in both Open/Save dialog and Windows Explorer.

In Open/Save dialog after the 20 secs it does not change the folder inside the dialog but open an new explorer instead.

I also noticed that during those 20 secs AD.exe uses around 10% of the CPU.

And the "Add to AutoDialogs menu" item is missing from the contextual menu when I right click on a folder.

Strange behavior...

Note: I tested all those things on XP and it works. I guess it is also working on Vista and Win 7 32-bit but apprently there are some incompatibilities with 64-bit systems.

Robert Bull Please, does AutoDialogs have the ability to switch a file open/save dialog to the active directory that Total Commander and/or other file managers are pointing to?

Alexander Bednyakov No, it can navigate only to the list of pre-setup folders that you enter in AutoDialogs.
