What are people saying about Data Extractor

Agniesca Rizzolani On their buying page here they state :

"Buy Data Extractor
Extract any data, emails and URLs from files and the web
Todays 50% daily discount also applies to the Extraction Pack. Get Data Extractor, Email Extractor and HTML Text Extractor together at a drastically reduced rate!
Buy Data Extractor $29.50$14.75
Buy Extraction Pack (Data Extractor, Email Extractor and HTML Text Extractor) $65.50$32.75"

Well, the price, 33 dollars, is "good", BUT :

I do NOT like software houses that split up the functionality of their programs into different programs of rather identical functionality:

First because it's not the right attitude since a software house should always be willing to give its product the utmost functionality it is able to implement, within the limits of "things together that belong together", instead of them (unsuccessfully) trying to opimize their revenues by cutting functionality that belongs together, into different programs.

Second because I am not willing to shuffle around with THREE different programs, like here, to do very similar things, that is, splitting things up unnecessarily not only wants to milk the customer, which I'm against, but also bothers and annoys the customer, and I'am against it again.

So, thumbs down, without having had a look upon those 3 "different" programs that should be one, it seems to me.

Nico Westerdale Thanks for the comments, I'm sure that there are just as many people who dislike software bloat and prefer slimmer software applications that do one thing well.

Jon G A problem that I run into from time to time is that I will visit a page where I need to download all the files listed. So I will have to sit there and right click on 30 links to download all the files. I am always concerned that I might miss one so afterwards I have to recheck my downloads against the listing.

Will your program (Pack?) take care of that for me?
Apr 28 2009 at 5:58am Copy Link
0
Nico Westerdale Yes, the Data Extractor does have an option to follow all the links on each webpage and spider an entire site. You can also use it to retrieve all the URLs on a page with one of the inbuilt rules.
BitsDuJour Admin - Apr 28 2009 at 6:01am Copy Link
0
Jon G Retrieving URLs is different from retrieving the files that the URLs refer to. Just to clarify further, you are saying that your program will download the actual files and not just a list of file URLs?

Thanks. :-)
Apr 28 2009 at 9:54am Copy Link
0
Nico Westerdale Ah no, the Data Extractor is not a website file downloader. You can use various rules to retrieve information from files and/or urls, but not the actual files themselves.

Rick Truell Jon G:

If you're using Windows, you might want to check out Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/). It's capable of doing what you want. I use it for most of my downloading and it works well. Best of all, it's free.

Or, if you're using Firefox, check out the extension Down Them All! (http://www.downthemall.net/). I haven't tried it yet (just discovered it tonight!!), but it looks like it'll do what you want, it's free and since it's a Firefox extension, it's cross-platform...FDM is Windows-only.

Stefan Hauber I just dowloaded the trial version and I like the multitude of extraction-possibilities, especially the javascript-possibility.

When clicking on the '?Help' in the program, I got no help window or similar. So I found one on your website 'http://www.iconico.com/Da.../help.aspx'. Perhaps it's the same? Else perhaps I am asking some questions that would be answered there.

1) I did not find any project-save possibility in the trial-version (even not a disabled one). Perhaps this exists in the unlocked version. But I want to be sure... It's difficult to believe that the user has to enter each time the very same rule-data to extract datas from another web-site. So does this exist (or perhaps the former data is stored automatically)?

(2) For creation of a new kind of data-extraction a window-surface is sureley the best choice. But after having done this work and having saved the rules and verifyed it's correctness, a command-line call would be very useful:

a) Does DataExtractor has such a possibilty? (If not, is it planned for the next future. I suppose the time to invest in implementing this possibility would be not so huge, but it would increase it's usefullness extremely)

b) My idea for a more complex usage would be to embed DataExtractor in a sequence of commands.

For example to automatically call it subsequently with the appropriate command-line-options to get different information from different websites (e.g. weather, news, discounts, ...), merge the result-files together somehow to create a new html-file (probably not possible with data-extractor) , call the webbrowser of choice and voila: A single website with all required information...

Or let DataExtractor collect all picture-urls of a website, let it be prefixed with a download-command, e.g. 'wget', a command-line-tool allowing download contents, and make it stored in a file pictures.bat. Than I would just have to call picture.bat, which would automatically download my desired pictures.

(3) At last: Is this a user-license, i.e. can I install the file on all my computers?

Thank you...

Nico Westerdale Stefan,

I'm happpy to answer your questions. Firstly the help in the applicaiton does link to the online help.

1) The rules that you creat on the 2nd tab are all automatically saved whenever there is a change.

2) I agree a command line option would be useful, currently we dont have that funtionality. We hope to add this given the usual constraints of time.

3) The license is for one computer and for one additional portable computer.

S B This looks very valuable. I do have some questions: 1) Is this now licensed only for one computer and not an additional laptop? 2) Security: can the user allow/disallow a) cookies or third-party cookies, b) web bugs, c) javascript/java d) flash, e) images 3) Where are cookies/temp files stored, in a Data Extractor directory or in a Browser directory? 4) Windows 7 (32 & x64) aren't on the platform list above. Should they be? Is this product still under active development? Thanks!

Nico Westerdale Our licesne does allow for use on a laptop and a desktop computer. The application uses Internet Explorer, so whatever settings you have in there will be used in Data Extractor, and it uses Internet Explorer's cache too. The application does work on Windows7 and we are still developing all our products.

Nico Westerdale The Data Extractor extracts on it's own without a browser. It uses Javascript rules to extract from webpages, and these can be quite powerful. There is an option for it to extract as you surf using Internet Explorer, but not Firefox.

Richard Cavaney Just an update on my previous post, to say that everything now worked fine for me this time round.
Also to thank BDJ for the speed with which they acted on to fix the problems. When things go wrong (which they do for everyone and everything sooner or later) it is how things occur under pressure that shows how much care is being put into things. I think BDJ did a first class job with getting things back up and running.
Finally to say that although I don't agree with Facebook's privacy policies and would prefer not to have anything to do with them, at the end of the day it is surely up to BDJ to decide how to run things.
I will comment further about the loathed Facebook on the Forum http://www.bitsdujour.com/view/id=18336 .
Also a big thankyou to Iconico for the software.
