What are people saying about DeepTrawl v4

Nelson Therrien There's no way to scan for a page in another language than English... And I didn't find any way to bypass the spelling checking.

So, the demo version flagged near 80 such errors on a small page... maybe the full version would find even more... I don't want a spell checker, I already have one... I want to check for the quality of the page...
Jan 10 2011 at 12:55am Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews Hi Nelson,

You can disable spell checking in the "Checks tab". Scroll down to the spell check feature and click the green tick.

Jonathan Matthews No problem, let me know if you have any other questions.
Deep Cognition Ltd. - Jan 10 2011 at 7:46am Copy Link
Preston Mitchell Mr. Matthews,
Deep Cognition produced a very good software for discovering errors on a web compliments. However, I did not purchase after using the trial version downloaded from CNET. Why? You might say it was a matter of 'rude sticker shock'. The price for Deep Trawl is reported as $49.00 on CNET...and that is what I expected to pay when I decided to buy the product after trying I was shocked to see the order state $ $100 increase over the advertised price...that rude surprise dissuaded me from purchasing.
Jan 11 2011 at 7:58pm Copy Link
Frank Stephens It's always fun to run the websites of website-checking software through the numerous developer tools in the IE9 beta. The DeepTrawl web pages pass some and show numerous errors and warnings on others. IE9 is beta software, and I noticed as it changes and when used on different platforms, most of the developer tools work fine but some don't. I'm not getting reports on Win7x64. It uses the W3C Link Checker, but it's passing the URL string in the wrong format for the Link Checker. Just enter it manually, without the "http://". As I said, there are numerous developer tools in IE9, DeepTrawl will check some things which the IE9 developer tools don't, the IE9 developer tools will check some things which DeepTrawl doesn't, and in some areas they overlap.
Jan 11 2011 at 8:48pm Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews @Mitchell - Sorry about that, DeepTrawl is mainly promoted through search marketing and we've obviously let the information on CNET slip due to lack of attention. I'll look into getting DeepTrawl de-listed from

Apologies again for the mixup, since this is clearly our fault I'd be willing to discount a basic 500 license down to $49.00 for you. Just ping and email to if you'd like to purchase at that price.

@Frank - I agree there are a lot of tools out there to check various different things. We do pay attention to quality at I'll try running the IE9 tools against it so thanks for the heads up.

Keith Norton I'm impressed. This is definitely worth the BDJ price for anyone managing websites.

Yves Ros Hello,

Is it possible to perform spell checking in other languages than English with Deep Trawl ?

Thanks in advance for your kind reply.
Nov 17 2011 at 1:35am Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews @Yves Ros. We only support US, UK & Canadian English but you can turn off the spell checker if the results are distracting.
Deep Cognition Ltd. - Nov 17 2011 at 6:14am Copy Link
Yves Ros Thanks for this information, Jonathan.
Do you plan to create "language packs" for the future versions of Deep Trawl ?

Lupke Brother thank you for this giveaway:

1. can we install the product when we want or do we need to install today? Can we re-install later if necessary or not?
2. Can we use this giveaway in the future to upgrade to version 4 (when released) and do we get the same 70% upgrade discount as on your website? see:
3. Can we use this giveaway to upgrade to a higher version of deep trawl with the difference between the license price + $10 as stated on your website?
Aug 1 2012 at 6:29am Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews 1. You can install / re-install later but the first time you use your license key you'll be asked to create a password for it. You'll need to remember that password to install again later.

2. We don't know yet what the upgrade pricing / discount will be for DeepTrawl v4 (and we don't even have a tentative date for a v4 yet). When it happens you'll get the same price as regular customers.

3. Yes, you'll get the same discounted upgrade path so essentially this gives you a big discount off Pro 2,000 and Enterprise Unlimited licenses.
Deep Cognition Ltd. - Aug 1 2012 at 6:39am Copy Link
Lupke Brother @ Jonathan,

Now we are talking about a great giveaway! Thnx.
Aug 1 2012 at 6:46am Copy Link
Nelson Therrien There's a lot of mentions of XHTML on your website... Can it validate an HTML5 page or it will throw a bunch of false errors?

If it can't you should really look into releasing version 4...
Aug 2 2012 at 6:23am Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews @Nelson

1. You can turn off the alt checking, see:

Settings Check type settings Check for missing image attributes

2. You can turn this off also:

Checks tab Disable "Check for missing noscript tags"

3. No, we aren't supporting HTML 5 yet. Keep in mind HTML 5 is not the latest standard, it's a future standard and its contents are in flux. If we implemented support for it we'd be weighing in on the definition of the standard & we'd have to make judgement calls.

4. Other languages may come in the future.

Subscriber Subscriber Here is what I got from my NIS software after downloading:
February 15, 2012 3:15:47 PM
Risk Impact:
Systems Affected:
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000

WS.Reputation.1 is a detection for files that have a low reputation score based on analyzing data from Symantec's community of users and therefore are likely to be security risks. Detections of this type are based on Symantec's reputation-based security technology. Because this detection is based on a reputation score, it does not represent a specific class of threat like adware or spyware, but instead applies to all threat categories.

The reputation-based system uses "the wisdom of crowds" (Symantec's tens of millions of end users) connected to cloud-based intelligence to compute a reputation score for an application, and in the process identify malicious software in an entirely new way beyond traditional signatures and behavior-based detection techniques.

Well could be my side the fault is at, but I only seem to get the index.html file scanned, it seems to skip the rest.

I only get comment about the doctype and some minor things like page comments and that.

This all done in 0.1 sec.

Can it be that my index is a meta redirect to the Wordpress folder?
It seems to scan the index.html, and end scan there.

Cheryl Rutherford So, why would an app include a false/positive just so it can be kicked out by top-notch AV programs????

I am not going to risk it. Even if I turn Norton off and then on again after download, it will scan my PC and kick it out again.

The headache is just not worth it.
Aug 3 2012 at 10:04am Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews @Michael - Ah, yes, that's a known issue and on the to do list. Just enter the page it redirects to as the Start Page.

@Cheryl - Essentially this is Symantec's fault, it shouldn't be raised as an issue by them. We weren't aware of this until today but have now contacted them to get DeepTrawl white listed so this won't happen in the future.

Deep Cognition Ltd. - Aug 3 2012 at 11:03am Copy Link

Just want to reiterate Jonathan -- false positives are not unusual, and more often than not reflect flaws with the AV software.

BitsDuJour Admin - Aug 3 2012 at 11:25am Copy Link
Jann Martin Ok, so this is a false positive, I'm getting error indicating program is unsafe so Norton has removed it. I can't download it because as soon as it downloads, its gone! what do I do about that?
Aug 3 2012 at 11:29am Copy Link
William Hernandez I have the same question:
Why would an app include a false/positive?
Aug 3 2012 at 11:49am Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews This explains all you need to know both why & how to work around the Norton issue.
Deep Cognition Ltd. - Aug 3 2012 at 11:57am Copy Link
Matt Sweeney As I understand it, Norton and Symantec give false positives because of some code that is designed to ensure that software given away on a certain date can only be installed/activated on the day it was given away. In order to get it to work with Norton, temporarily disable SONAR detection and download as usual.

Of course, as with anything involving software of computers--I may be completely wrong.

Jonathan Matthews Hi Stephen. Version 4 will be a paid upgrade.
Deep Cognition Ltd. - Aug 31 2013 at 4:05am Copy Link
Nelson Therrien I just reinstalled it from a previous purchase...

It looks like version 3.9 is still NOT able to detect HTML5 page! It falls back to XHTML 1 and then throws errors on meta charset="utf-8" and so on...

Still lucky I didn't use HTML5 tags...

WHEN will you make it compatible with HTML5? Come on guys, it's been there for a long time now!

Also, it flags an error saying that my images don't have an alt text... They DO have one, it's just that it's empty (alt=""). Come on, you never read the specs saying that the alt="" attribute must be present, but it doesn't require it to have actual text? If I don't want a screen reader to read the content of the image, I put it that way (or through CSS)... This is perfectly valid with the W3C validator...

I understand why I had uninstall it previously...
Aug 31 2013 at 9:07am Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews Hi Nelson; html 5 validation is coming in v4. You can turn off warnings about your alt tags by de-selecting 'Check for missing image attributes' in the checks tab.

Nelson Therrien Yes, I expect it... but it will be a paid upgrade... According to current pricing on your website, that means another 50$, unless you release it within 3 months...

As for the alt attribute, I DO want to know if the attribute is MISSING, but not if it's EMPTY! There's a big difference between the two... Please change that in the upcoming version...

Andrew Griffiths How long does it take Deep Crawl to crawl a site of 500 pages? How long for 2000? I realize crawl time depends on various factors including site responsiveness but I'm looking for a ballpark. Thanks.
Jan 16 2014 at 9:37am Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews @Andrew.

As you say it does vary massively. On our site it rips through at a rate of about 5 pages per second when run locally here, but I've seen some faster and some slower than this.

It depends on:
- How fast your connection is
- How fast the data center is
- Congestion in the middle mile
- The weight of the pages
- How fast any server side processing of the pages runs
- Whether the server throttles the connection.
- Very occasional how fast your CPU is can be a factor, but we've done a lot of work on optimizing CPU usage, this is rarely a limiting factor.

Given all of the above times can vary a lot. Generally for a 500 / 2000 page site I wouldn't be concerned, just go & make a coffee :)

If you're concerned about this you could download the demo and try it out (although the errors view is limited, it will still check every page & you'll see when it's done).
Deep Cognition Ltd. - Jan 16 2014 at 9:50am Copy Link
Andrew Griffiths Thanks for your answer, Jonathan.

Re services that are page specific (e.g. keywords to be checked vary by page) how is this managed?

Does the user have to enter a single page URL and the keywords to be checked for that URL on a page-by-page basis? Or can users specify either (a) subsets of pages using parameters of the URLs (or even regex expressions) or (b) a list of single pages - together with keywords to be checked either by subset or individual page. It strikes me as unwieldy to only be able to one page at a time if page URL and keywords have to be specified each time you want to check a single page.

Jan 16 2014 at 3:32pm Copy Link
Jonathan Matthews @Andrew

Yes, it would be unwieldy to have to check individual keywords against individual pages.

DeepTrawl takes a unique approach to this. You enter a set of keywords and it checks every single page against each one, the results show the pages that are the best match for the keyword ranked in order, best first, with the areas for improvement underneath.

This means you don't need to enter a regex or list of pages, the software does all the work.

Andrew Griffiths @Jonathan. Looks like you missed my 2nd question. I went ahead and purchased the Enterprise version anyway. Looking forward to putting it through its paces. Would still appreciate an answer though. Cheers

Ralph Bressler I purchased the Enterprise edition of Version 3 some time ago. I have nothing but good things to say about this program. I admit that I do not use things like the keyword checker, yet, but for checking links, images Na dispelling it is great. I also use it for spelling and that works well also. Since you can limit the types of files and exclude certain other files by location the Enterprise version may not really be necessary. Most people will be able to use the Basic version for their needs. Again, great job!

Norm Sash Hi... can you tell me what the development path might be? I have version 4.0 from 2013 and haven't seen any updates. Not that there is anything specific that I'm looking for, but most time there are program updates over two years.

Daniel . Is it possible to get upgrade pricing? I got a version that was given away back in 2012.

Jonathan Matthews Hi Daniel, I'm afraid not. We normally do 50% off for upgrades, and the BDJ offer is for 50% off, but they can't be combined.
