What are people saying about doogiePIM

Leib Moscovitz I just tried this, and it seems to be a slightly modified version of the now defunct Do Organizer by GemX (a.k.a. Harmony Pim in a slightly later incarnation).

Is there any difference between these programs, aside from the company behind them? And, indeed, is DoogiePim a a legitimate clone or quasi-clone of Do Organizer?

Jul 19 2016 at 12:28am Copy Link
BiteSpire doogiePIM is indeed based on the source of do-Organizer/Harmony. GemX went out of business and I (Chris) have taken the source and rebuilt it. Taking out many of the bugs that plagued the calendar and greatly improved the whole experience.

I invite you to download doogiePIM and check out the difference for yourself. I'm sure you will see and feel the changes. Of course, it does mean that your old version 4 databases will open, with a slight change to the file extension. If you do find any bugs or changes you wish to have implemented, please drop your ideas in the Community forum or email me directly.

The current development history is available from here, for your perusal:

W Ma Trial seems quite limited functionality with most menu items grayed out. I'd like to see how noteboard works, but can't do anything with it. Can't edit items. Can't add items. Can't move items.
Jul 20 2016 at 7:00pm Copy Link
BiteSpire The Trial version is exactly the same as the Full version, except the 30 day licence. All features are there and available.

Some menu items are greyed out for a reason. eg: a Delete command would be grey if there is nothing to delete or there is no item selected.

First ensure you have a database created, that's the very first step. Use the File menu or click on the "Create a new database" hyperlink on the Home page.

As for the Noteboard; First ensure you have a Noteboard selected (on the left hand side Navigator).eg: "Desktop of Thoughts".

Now right click on the large canvas area and you will see "Add Note Block". Select that and a new block will appear. Move it around by hovering the mouse over the yellow title area of the block, then left click and drag. You will also notice the edit commands have appeared to adjust the visuals of the block.
To edit the note block content, simply left click inside the block and start typing.

Don't forget to check the View menu to reveal further toolbars, if needed.

Many thanks to you and everyone for your feedback. Please keep it coming.

nylg I am looking for a replacement for Lotus Organizer. I used to use Organizer extensively. The two things it had, and which I think are indispensable, was that it was a standalone package i.e. it was not web-based as so many PIMs are nowadays. The second thing was the ability to create links from most of the things in it. For example you could create a link from a calendar item to a Contact. You could link a contact to some telephone call notes. You could also link to a file that was somewhere on your machine and then go to it and open it in its own package e.g. Word.

You could also create new sections such as say a section of Notes but notes that were of a more specialised nature.

I have not tried the trail yet. Some things put me off such as the use of the Chrome type browser. I am also concerned about how the email function works. I like to work out of Outlook for my emails.

I will give it a try as it does look like it might offer the features I miss in Organizer. I am running Organizer on my Windows 7 machine but it seems not to behave perfectly.

Many thanks for offering this software on Bits Du Jour.

BiteSpire doogiePIM is a standalone application, not a web-based system. It has it's own database which is all managed within one folder. Hence being able to be portable. The only time doogiePIM accesses the Internet is when it needs to verify your licence key and when you check for updates for newer versions. Other times are when you explicitly check for new email or use the built-in browser. However, if you don't use these functions it won't apply.

doogiePIM has the ability to link record to record. You can even hyperlink text from within any note or formatted text to any record within your database (except the Vault as that is protected). Record links are called "Related Links". I believe this is one of doogiePIM's greatest features.

The built-in web-browser is based on the same rendering engine as "Chrome", not Chrome itself. The engine is the same as Opera and Firefox. It simply renders the HTML and PDF onto the screen.

I hope you give doogiePIM a go and I hope you'll at least find it a complementary application, if not a full replacement for your personal information management.

Petr I read your description, comments above and visited your website. Your doogiePIM sounds great but I would really need to see a video demo. PIMs are very user-interaction-sensitive so they complement my work-flow style.

Also, I understand it is a Windows native app, but these days I need to have access to read/write or update my data on my Android phone, iPad and laptop. Do you have plans to provide some kind of remote access or sync of dtabases to other of my devices? Thanks.

Javier Gil Great news to hear that Bite-Spire is relaunching this Pim. I still use Harmony every single day. My favourite features are the calendar and the vault. I'll be following developoment closely.
Jul 22 2016 at 2:17am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Petr: I've created a YouTube channel ready for some tip videos but they are still in production. I can understand that doogiePIM can be quite daunting and do agree with you that video will help to ease the use of such a big piece of software. Look for upcoming videos soon:
BiteSpire doogiePIM android is part of development. That's all I'm saying, except that it won't be Cloud based. ;)

@Javier: That's awesome. It's great to hear from a Harmony user. I'm open to development feedback in the BiteSpire Community forum at any time.

smaragdus The program looks interesting and I have a few questions:
-What is the upgrade policy? No free upgrades? 1 year of free upgrades? Lifetime free upgrades?
-Can all the modules (Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Tasks, etc) be made visible (in the side panel or elsewhere)?
-Is the portable version really portable? I mean does it write anything to Windows registry. If used from an external drive would it leave any traces behind on other computers? Is the price the same for the Installer and the Portable versions?
-I don't like the monochrome GUI, are there any skins/colour themes?
Jul 22 2016 at 4:01am Copy Link
BiteSpire @smaragdus:
1. Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted by 50%+. It will be discounted only if you've purchased the last major version.

2. The top of the screen are tabs to each section, making it quick and easy to get to. You could show the Section Toolbar if you would like a classic way to launch each. Look around the UI, you'll see many ways to launch various tools.

3. Yes, "portable" means portable. The full version of doogiePIM can be launched from any read/write storage media that has a reasonable read/write speed. All the settings and configuration of doogiePIM is written to settings file within only the folder it is contained in.

4. Check the View menu, there are Theme colours there, as well as in the Settings and Preferences to change the colour of the command icons independent of the theme colour. Have blue icons on a white theme. Change the base font too. doogiePIM is very customizable.

Brenda Adams No videos, no Help. I looked it over, but came away thinking the price should be lower until it's a more finished product. Looks good, but I'm not ready until there it feels more finished or the price is greatly lowered while in a beta-like state.

Ronald Jurman Downloaded the trial.

It's nice to see the finance section (among others), but I'm quite at a loss to see how one might include things like reoccurring bills (electricity, water, gas, etc.), perhaps with advance reminders for payment. Perhaps through linking to events somehow?

And more generally, in the different sections, perhaps a way to add/modify custom fields in places?
Jul 22 2016 at 5:08pm Copy Link
Lito I tried out the trail, but I will have to pass, I just don't have the time to properly vet if this can be a replacement for the smart diary suite medical program that I am currently using. Unfortunately I thought maybe it was possible to do some things I wanted, using the report generator, but I just kept hitting a learning curve wall due to lack of documentation. I press F1 I basically got a page that had a note on it saying docs are a work in progress and not complete. Nor could I find a manual on the official site. So I hope you get the docs finished in the near future and I will keep watch for this program here and try it again then.

@Ronald : I think you have to do it in the calendar to do reoccurring things. I had a similar issue when trying to set a daily task list. There wasn't a way to set it to have a reoccurring pop up but you can do reoccurring events on the calendar.
Jul 22 2016 at 10:02pm Copy Link
Ronald Jurman Agreed, Lito. That is the only section I came across as well. It's just that there's a very useful looking finance section, but no apparent way to tie it in, and paying bills is about as common a financial transaction as I can think of.

smaragdus I hope that doogiePIM will appear here again- it looks very interesting and powerful but I didn't have time to test and I never purchase before I do some tests. When I had time to have a look at it doogiePIM was gone. Maybe next time. ;)

BiteSpire Many people have contacted me on the issue of "Are you GemX and is this do-organizer?". do-Organizer / Harmony is no more. GemX Software closed its doors a few years ago, leaving a lot of disgruntled users. Hence the reason why I created a new version called doogiePIM. Please don't ask what happened to gemx, as I'm not privy to that information.

The good news is, all do-Organizer registered users get a 65% discount off the current price of doogiePIM. Just contact for the link.

I hope this has cleared the air. Hope to hear from you all soon.

Been using it since it came out, never regretted it.
I strongly recommend it!

Ennovy Tested many PIMs but doogiePIM is the best.
Totally agree with @Javier Gil and I also highly recommend it.
There is a portable version and all settings and data are written in the application folder. No entries in the Windows registry or user profile folder.

Bill Sech On the one hand, this program seems impressive at first look. It is good quality and features rich. However, on the other hand, it seems a little behind on some things. For instance, the tasks don't seem to have a "Recurrence" feature. That means if I used it I would be in the position of manually creating each task daily from the create task form. When I have 10 or 15 daily tasks that are the same every day, that is a major deal killer. In other programs that lack a recurrence feature they might have the ability to copy a task and then paste it right back in which might make for a possible solution, however, Doogie doesn't allow me to copy a task or simply there is no copy and paste function that would allow me to duplicate a task that way. Double bummer! Anyway, the software does seem to work good without any bugs so far. There are many sections that can be tied together with links etc. There is much to play around with that is interesting.
Jun 12 2017 at 10:30am Copy Link
Javier Gil You can use the recurrence feature from the calendar. Simply create a new task/recurrence/event.
Jun 12 2017 at 10:41am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Bill Sech; Javier is correct. Use the Calendar section for when you have time-specific "Events". The Tasks section is more for projects and to-do items. The Calendar Events do allow you to copy/paste and you can create Events from a Task with a single command. You are then able to realise recurring events quite easily.

@Everyone; Thank you all for your very kind words.
BiteSpire - Jun 12 2017 at 12:19pm Copy Link
Bill Sech The only recurrence feature is in the creation of a calendar event. The finished tasks show up in the calendar, not the task list. For perpetual daily tasks, it results in a bloated overstuffed calendar that loses the organization that is easy to view and understand approach which the task list provides. I see by the version number that this is a newer program. I'm sure the maker's of software as good as this might find the addition of a recurrence feature in tasks to be a smart idea in future versions. Obviously, they are very capable. There is so much to explore and get familiar with in this program. I would encourage people to at least download it and check it out. I'll keep it on my watchlist.

Pavi Johnson Hi, any updates on Google calendar and contact sync? This is rather important in the connected world.

On the forum, it was previously mentioned that this was being developed, but I haven't seen any update.

Best, /Pavi
Jun 14 2017 at 12:22am Copy Link
BiteSpire doogiePIM already has the ability to import/export ICS easily. This means you can use your private ICS Google Calendar URL. (See Google Calendar for more info). The main idea of doogiePIM is security and encryption of your data stored in a local environment. Therefore, a controlled form of import/export is being adopted rather than sync with unsecure Clouds. Again, this falls inline with the Android further development this year. Development goes through many stages. Firstly through in-house private testing, then in-house beta, public alpha, public beta, public test release then final release. It can take many months especially for large and impacting stage development. Hopefully that helps :)
BiteSpire - Jun 14 2017 at 12:40am Copy Link
Pavi Johnson Hi, thanks that is good news as I really would to avoid re-entry of information.

Adding new meetings, etc. would be rather easy since I just ordered a GPD pocket to use as my "all day carry" computer.

Will the Android app sync with the PC version?

Best, /Pavi
Jun 14 2017 at 12:59am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Pavi; I thought GPD pocket devices were mainly Ubuntu Linux based. I have seen a Windows 10 version though. In current doogiePIM development tests, Android 5+ is being used, so if your device runs this, you should be fine.
BiteSpire - Jun 14 2017 at 1:07am Copy Link
Pavi Johnson Hi Chris,

I see I have mixed topics. GPD Pocket is just a tiny PC, which comes with Windows 10 (or Linux) and it being released very soon. Thus, I can have it in my jacket pocket virtually all day and add appointments, etc.

Regarding Android, I was just curious if the PC program will sync data with the Android app, in this case meaning a separate phone that I carry (in case the GPD Pocket is not handy).

Best, /Pavi

bsr007 Hi Chris, I am currently trialling doogiePIM and it looks great. If I configure two email accounts in doogiePIM, can the messages associated with those accounts be viewed separately or are all messages listed in the single inbox? Thanks for your help.
Jun 14 2017 at 1:29am Copy Link
BiteSpire @bsr007; All messages, by default, are placed into the Inbox. However, you can specify a different destination folder by creating a Message Rule. Simply setup one rule that matches your email address recipient to go to a different folder. See here for Message Rules Help:

Wocius Wei I haven't used this -- yet -- but I think the developer deserves high praise for actually putting a real mailing address on his Contact page. I am always a bit concerned about entering personal data and info into a PIM whose developer is essentially anonymous -- a name and nothing else. Not the case here, so thank you, Chris!

_*_ Questions/Thoughts
Have personally used several PIMs (EssentialPIM, TaskMerlin, Chaos:Intelect, EfficentPIM (Efficcess)) I have given up on PIMs utilizing email (all seem to fail here), and have stuck with Efficcess which has a lifetime license.
That said, I really like what you are doing with your software and all the features it contains. Here are some thoughts.

1. My IMAP email account does not display my folders from my email account. It receives mail, but none of the folders are present. How can I make them display?
2. Really like the browser within the email program. Thanks
3. Count me as a potential user that would like to see passwords hidden with in the vault area.
4. The vault area should have an option to require the Master Password when clicking on the tab once focus is off this tab.
5. Be nice to have a key to check mail and not have to use the menu.
6. Allow users to format the Home Page how they would like and make sense to them.
7. Give users the ability to have shaded heading on the Home Page and not just colored icons. The headers get lost too easily.
8. Place the "Show this message image" in the header of the email message bypassing the need to click on the little "eye" icon then choosing to reveal images.
9. Not a huge fan of all the icons, everywhere, but really like the Tabs for each section along the top.

That is enough for now. Your hard work is really appreciated and I am seriously considering supporting your efforts to offer a stable and secure PIM.
Jun 14 2017 at 8:23am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Wocius Wei;
You're very welcome. Thank you for your confidence.

1. IMAP4 folders is an improvement that can be implemented in a future version. Thanks.
2. You're welcome.
3. Passwords in the listgrid or cardview can be hidden/replaced with stars with the command on the toolbar and in the View menu, "Show Passwords with Stars".
4. Requiring a master password can be set in the [Settings and Preferences/Vault] "Vault locking options". Simply choose "Lock Vault when going to another section".
5. Right-click the Windows system tray icon and there's a command to "Check mail..." there. You can also setup a HotKey to define your own key combination to check mail at anytime. HotKeys are setup in the [Settings and Preferences].
6. The Home Page can be customised with the command "Customise Home Page" on the right-click context menu or in the main menu "Edit". You can then add data panels containing various data filters for events etc.
7. Shaded Heading? I'm not sure what you mean by this. Please explain.
8. The idea of having to click the "Eye" first is to confirm that the command is what you want. Having remote images displayed in emails lends itself to compromise of privacy and possible delivery of unwanted data. If the command is a single click, this can be accidentally clicked.
9. Toolbars and icons can be hidden. Right-click a toolbar and choose hide. They can be shown/hidden from the main menu "View".

Thank you for your feedback and hope this may be of help to you.

Pavi Johnson Hi again, I've been testing a bit more - quite impressive! To me, the killer feature is the Year Planner. It gives a very powerful way to set yearly goals in many areas, and view them seamlessly.

Quick email questions:
1) Emails have contacts as Related Links. Is there any way to quickly see all related mail from the same person? I find that I have to click the related contact, then All Related Links, then expand to get all mails. This also gives only basic message information, and takes a bit of time.

2) Any way to drag and drop to the file system or other applications as .eml or even .msg?

3) Any way to roll all Related Links for a contact together, so that sort by date let's one see the last item for that contact? Thus, making a CRM with last time any call or mail was exchanged. A great idea would be a field for "Last contact" in the contact window (list view) that would automatically grab the last date of all related items!

Best, /Pavi

bsr007 Hi Chris, When adding an event to the Calendar section can it automatically be associated with the colour of a particular Category or does the event colour always have to be changed manually? Many thanks.

BiteSpire @Dave Venus;
The offer has been extended by one more day.
Thank you.
1. Quick commands could be added in development to achieve this. Thanks for the heads up.
2. You can drag a file from Windows to the Related Links to achieve a virtual link but not the other way. To get an eml file, use the "File/Export/Mail Message".
3. A switch to toggle tree view and list view would be an interesting idea. Thanks for the suggestion.
BiteSpire - Jun 15 2017 at 12:22am Copy Link
BiteSpire @bsr007;
This feature is actually already in development. The Finance section already uses this, to change the visual display to either, category, type or window colour. I see other sections to do the same.
BiteSpire - Jun 15 2017 at 12:25am Copy Link
Pavi Johnson Hi Chris, I actually purchased after more testing. To follow up my questions:

1) A button or shortcut to toggle mail view between "From Sender", and "Do Not Group", would achieve this very easily. (Many might also like by "Subject" to get a threaded view).

2) Not needed anymore as I discovered the command "Select all and copy" - very handy.

3) In Contacts, List view - A field that says "Last Communication" and has the latest date from all related links would be an absolutely amazing feature! Thus, one could see the last communication with all contacts, ie. business leads in order to know to follow up. There are already extra fields, so could you program one to grab this information?? Thus, a true CRM would be possible.

To sum, the more I use DoogiePim, the more I realize that this has serious power. It is possible to install this on two machines, and sync the database (when not in use)? Wiht a 7 in screen, the GPD Pocket will not be my main machine :)

Best, /Pavi

BiteSpire @Pavi;
1. Agreed.
2. Awesome :)
3. Agreed. Thus the reason for the Extra Fields. Use them to add CRM specific fields as you need.

doogiePIM does allow opening the same database by different machines on the same LAN at the same time. However, this is dependant on your Windows file sharing network so knowledge and experience in this area is important. When full sync development is done with Android, to be able to sync over LAN between doogiePIM sessions with different Windows clients is planned development.

One of the things that Gmail doesn't always tell you is; Are you using an application specific password?
You didn't mention if you want IMAP or POP so here's a couple of help pages for you:

I, and other users, are using gmail in doogiePIM so I'm very confident that it works. Let me know if you require further assistance.

Chuck @BiteSpire

Set it up as POP3 account:
Port 995
Correct address
Correct password
Leave messages

Also tried IMAP
Port 993

No luck either way.

Note: both POP and IMAP are enabled in my GMail account.

Tried sending an email within DPM. It appears to have sent within DPM, but never reached my actual GMail account.

BiteSpire @Chuck;
It sounds like you need to generate an "App Password" in your Google account. To do that, see here:

Once you generate an app password, use that in doogiePIM instead of your Gmail account password. Remember to store your app password in a safe place. doogiePIM's Vault section is ideal for that.

"App Passwords" are needed when you have 2 step authentication on your Google account.

Hopefully, this fixes your connection problem.

Chuck @BiteSpire:

I don't have 2-step verification setup on my account. If memory serves, that caused an issue with another piece of software I use. At any rate I get this from GMail when I attempt to set an app password up: "The setting you are looking for is not available for your account."

Pavi Johnson Hi, I had a similar issue and Gmail sent me a notification stating that I needed to allow less secure apps.

However, since I was using SSL/TLS and IMAP, I am not sure why this would be considered "less secure".

You might want to check this setting in your Gmail.

H. H. Hallo,

1. I´ve to agree to Bill sech asking for a possibility to easily copy tasks - its really needed.

2. there seems to be a difficulty regarding attached files. Using german windows 7 ult. 64bit, I was not able to link to a windows inbuilt music example file. It was shown, but when trying to open it with doogiePIM it always said "sorry, error (-6).
The file path of the file was C:\Users\Public\Music\Sample Music\Kalimba.mp3.
Only when putting the file unter c:\kalimba.mp3 doogiePIM could open it. Perhaps it has something to do with the german windows version -but it urgently must be corrected because without a reliable pössibility to link to files (same issue with picture files,..) doogiePIM would not satisfy.
Do you think that you can bugfix this within version 1 (asking because not opening files would be a dealbreaker)?

3.Since the software uses online activation - what would happen in case your company gives up businiess (hopefully not) - It´s not a theoratical question, I already lost expensive software because the company shut down there license server (some companies solved the problem in a fair kind of way - they made their software freeware or they sent their customers a masterkey, so that reinstallation / new installation on a new pc was possible without online activation)

4. I think the software is promising and various features (perhaps also features request) may be discovered during longer usage. It´s a pitty that the software seems not to be well known.
For that it´s another example of an interesting piece of software, which would have remained unknown to me (and others) if not beeing offered at bdj. It seems, that famous online pc magazines like the german www. have not listed the program, so one would hardly "discover" it.
So for marketing it could be good to notify some eu famous online pc magazines too to make the software known to more people.and getting more customers

BiteSpire @H.H.;
1. I agree. Better copy/paste of Tasks has been added to the development schedule.
2. I'll make further investigation with Windows 7 under German. One item that has been fixed for the next release is the launching of files from Related Links. A new version is scheduled for release next week.
3. Once the online activation is done, there is a local file created in the doogiePIM folder called "C:\BiteSpire\doogiePIM\doogiePIMLicence.key". This is your key file that can be used should BiteSpire servers take a turn for the worst. It's a good idea to keep this key file with your collection of important backups.
4. I agree, more marketing is needed and steps have been taken to improve this.

I invite anyone and everyone to talk about doogiePIM in their respective social media outlets to help with spreading the word.

1. do you have anything like tags and the ability to search by them?
a nice tag cloud display would be nice...

2. have you considered using Javascript V8 as a user macro / scripting tool?

thank you for your detailed response.
During testing another questions occured:
Using the inbuilt browser - will there be a possibility to save webpages with all its pictures as pdf? I only was able to save them as text, but not the whole page with pictures - that´s a pitty, because otherwise the browser and bookmark function would be useful. If not already implemented - is it on the roadmap?
Thank you for responding again in advance.

Michael R. How does synchronizing work, if I installed doogiePIM on more than one of my computers?

Can I synchronize certain parts, e.g. family-appointments (but not business-appointments) with another person, owning doogiePIM too?
Jun 17 2018 at 3:48am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Javier: Many thanks for your wonderful comments. Yes, I do try to listen and implement user suggestions as and when I'm able to. Hence the community forum for posting ideas, suggestions and bug reports. No matter how far-fetched the suggestion, I will listen to it. @Michael R.: doogiePIM is a local database application. This means all your data is stored on your local disk, be it a USB disk drive or your hard disk. It doesn't save data to the Cloud. This means there is no sync through the Internet. (a security risk). However, should you have two machines on the same network at home/office, then you can open the same database at the same time on different computers (licence permitting). File Sharing is implemented in doogiePIM for each database. You can even setup Resources as login users, if you want; see here: Don't forget, doogiePIM lets you browse the web at the same time, so you could have your Google calendar open at the same time as your doogiePIM calendar, in different tabs.
BiteSpire - Jun 18 2018 at 9:51am Copy Link
Dunking I am kind of looking at this and quite seriously tempted. However, I learned the hard way not to put all my eggs in one basket so perhaps I could ask a couple of questions:

1. Could my data be extracted to some standard (probably csv) format? Like notes, inventory, etc?

2. And this is a go/no go thing: does it now sync with Google calendar and contacts? I see on the forum that this was 'in development' over a year ago but could see if it is actually working yet.

The reason 2 is important is because I tend to use more than one calendar/contact facility (sometimes editing on Google, sometimes on my phone). Google sync is the bit of string that can keep diverse and unrelated apps discussing the same data. So far as I know, there isn't another option (importing/exproting ical or whatever is a pain to roll across all devices, some not used for long periods, so not a solution).
Jun 19 2018 at 5:58pm Copy Link
BiteSpire @Dunking:
1. There are several export options in doogiePIM. The data grid listings can be exported as CSV and the notes, documents and rich text can be exported to TXT, DOCX, RTF, DON, XML and HTML. Email can be exported as EML or TXT format. There are also ways to use SQL commands to extract data too, such as "SELECT * from contacts" if you're knowledgable on SQL-92.
2. At the moment, the Calendar has an ICAL import and export function. This enables you to import a Google Calendar URL into the doogiePIM calendar or export a calendar out into ICAL format for importing into Google. This isn't an automatic sync but it does update records if they already exist when using this way.
BiteSpire - Jun 20 2018 at 1:27am Copy Link
Dunking Thanks @BiteSpire

The export stuff sounds great, but the Calendar (and contacts?) just won't happen, I'm afraid. It is too tedious (export from one thing to a file, import with another thing), and I won't remember every time I've updated something to do that.

On that basis I'm going to skip this, but if you have sync with Google calendar working at some point I'll certainly purchase a copy.

In trial, I seem to get only parsed text when I try that.
Jun 20 2018 at 3:20am Copy Link
BiteSpire @W MA:
You can use [Copy/Paste as HTML] which will paste the HTML format as best as it can. The images will be implemented in a near future version. Discussion of this is here:
BiteSpire - Jun 20 2018 at 4:14am Copy Link
W Ma Thank you, for directing me to the page re a single step web clippIng of words and pictures together preferably with layout preservation.
Sometimes it is worthwhile to save a whole webpage as it is.
Most often, I like to selectively clip (similar to what the discussion covered) charts or pictures with their aligned related text.

I am also interested in autosave functionality.
Does DoogiePIM autosave when I switch focus from a page, ie move to a different "page" within DoogiePIM? I've had that function in other programs and it makes saving a page completely unobtrusive.
Is there autosave whenever I exit the program, either autosave everything, or autosave only the last page - if every page has already autosaved when focus was shifted away from the page?

As you can see, I am trying to increase saving pages while decreasing the need to pay attention to the process.
Jun 20 2018 at 4:43am Copy Link
BiteSpire doogiePIM does have Autosave for documents, noteboards, spreadsheets and journals; When you move to another item, when you exit and even a Timed Autosave so you can stay on the same document but have it save automatically every x minutes: see here:

Mustang I am a long time user of EssentialPIM and I like how I can easily sync data with Outlook and my Android phone. Jun 20 2018 at 8:53am Copy Link
BiteSpire Android development is something that's still being worked on. This would be sync over LAN to some custom modules such as Calendar, Contacts and Tasks. There is no Android product for the public available at this time.

The more users suggest syncing the more I can develop (to a degree) and as long as it doesn't affect the data privacy principles of doogiePIM.

BiteSpire - Jun 20 2018 at 2:51pm Copy Link
Dunking @BiteSpire: I would suggest that Android development isn't very important for the likes of Calendar, Tasks and Contacts - if you have syncing in place then any device that can talk to Google will sync with the data. My current desktop calendar app, for instance, doesn't have an Android client, but on Android I use Business Calendar and it all just works fine - make a change in one and it appears in moments on the other.

Android would be important for things like notes where there isn't a generic Google sync and a zillion other compatible apps.
Jun 20 2018 at 4:35pm Copy Link
Ronald Jurman I have too many PIMs at this point to really consider adding another, but given ongoing online data breaches, etc., I think doogiePIM's approach to security is a wise one. Network syncing has a convenience, but from all appearances, almost no security. If you put anything online, just assume that you are sharing it with everybody. Hats off for a wise choice here.

big-red I've been looking for a notes programme that displays notes in a mind map or similar format. On looking at the doogiePIM trial, I see that the 'Noteboard' tab does exactly this. To me, this is a more intuitive way of viewing and creating notes, especially when creating brainstorming notes.

I'm seriously considering this offer. My current notes app contains hundreds of entries. I can export these as individual rtf files within a folder structure. To import each note individually would be a huge task. Is there any way of importing to doogiePIM multiple rtf files stored within folders, automatically formatting them into folders and subfolders in the Documents tab?
Jun 20 2018 at 11:10pm Copy Link
BiteSpire @big-red: When you go to import your RTF into Documents, use the "Import from file..." then when you get the file selector, you can multiple-select more than one file with Ctrl or Shift click. You can only import into one folder at a time but certainly a lot faster than one file at a time. I really like the idea of getting doogiePIM to automatically recreate the folder structure so I've added that to my dev schedule. Thanks for the observation and suggestion.
BiteSpire - Jun 21 2018 at 12:42am Copy Link
Dunking @Ronald: "Network syncing has a convenience, but from all appearances, almost no security"

Sure, that can be an issue, and I steer well clear of anything that does that without so much as a 'by your leave'. But assuming the user has the choice to do it or not, it is a use choice and if he figures the gain is worth the risk then it is up to him, not the developer. Taking your stance to extremes, no app should be internet-capable just in case the traffic is sniffed (we know it actually is).

Now, a lot of people see me as being paranoid for my position on things. I block Google analytics as a matter of course. Facebook is blocked via hosts, etc. The email registered to my phone is used nowhere else - it is /just/ to get access to Play. Yes, as you may have figured, the benefits of syncing my calendar via Google are sufficient to outweigh my natural caution. If that happens to me, there are /many/ less paranoid users that wouldn't give it a second thought.

I believe that having the option in an app like this is a must. Whether the user enables it or not is up to the user - the option being there doesn't force him to use it, you know :)

Are you familiar with DT2k?
Jun 21 2018 at 5:12am Copy Link
BiteSpire @DSS: You can setup a database with multiple Resources, each of which can have a Calendar. This can be stored on a computer on a LAN and be file shared across. If you want your family to have instant access to the same Calendar on their smartphone then doogiePIM isn't for you. doogiePIM is more of a single restricted local access database application.
BiteSpire - Jun 21 2018 at 5:31am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Scott Pam: Sorry, I'm not familiar with DT2K, although I did hear about it about 10 years ago. It was quite an organizer for Windows 98 back then. doogiePIM is able to import the old DBX format as well as CSV, should you wish, but better to actually start a fresh database, unless your records go into thousands. Always remember to try an import on a copy of the database first, just in case you want to roll back changes.

Colin McAllister I've trialled this software now, but I won't be buying. There's a lot to like about this software - I do however want everything in one place and the inability to easily import folders (and their sub-folders) and the lack of support of Docx and PPTx means doogiePIM is not there yet for me.

I would also have liked to opportunity to hide business contact information. In the West, with an aging population and fewer jobs, the numbers of redundant/retired (aged 50 upwards!) is therefore rising, so lots of detail about businesses that have been left is of no use.

Lito Can you add data fields to the Journals that can then be accessed in reports to make graphs?

Basically I am looking for something to replace my Smart Diary Suite 4 journal program that has been abandoned. I need the ability to track daily things like Weight, workout type/length, blood pressure, pulse rates etc... (basically I need to make customizable fields that I want to track) that I can then make a report to include a graph between 2 dates, average value over the time period (skipping any zero or no entries in case I forgot or missed recording values on a particular day or days), and a trend line for the time period.
Jul 16 2019 at 7:26am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Lito: Alas, the Journal section doesn't have custom fields that could be used for such a purpose. It's more for images and rich text. You could use the Tasks section to record each day's details but again the collection of specific fields is beyond that of what you need.

On the brighter side, in the version 3 edition there will be custom fields in the Tasks sections as well as the Resources. Version 3 is a long way off (less than 11 months).

In sum, sorry to say, doogiePIM wouldn't be a valid option for you at present. :(

Drew Vogel Can ALL of the program's database files (*.doo, etc.) be stored in a different directory than the program's installation directory?

I'd like to be able to store the database files (configuration settings, database, Scratchpad, doNotes, etc.) in my Dropbox so that when I access doogiePIM from any of my PCs (not at the same time) they point to the Dropbox folder and my exact config settings, etc.
Jul 17 2019 at 7:05am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Drew: Yes, you can use the portable version and the whole application including any settings, reports, configurations, database etc can all be placed in a custom folder of your choice.

DropBox isn't a great tool for this kind of database as the database file needs to be accessible the whole time whilst open. DB tends to update only parts of the file and can cause problems with what it thinks are updated parts. If you do access the database over DropBox, you must ensure one device has shutdown the database completely.

The good news is, if you want to open the database directly over your local area network, then you can do that (doogiePIM has built-in networking) but this must be over LAN using local file sharing. A good knowledge of Windows folder sharing is needed for this.

I hope this helps and thanks for the great question.

Todd User Bitspire,

I currently use EPIM and generally like it. I also use Ultra Recall and like it too for a different purpose. It appears your program could combine the features I like about both databases into a single all-encompassing database except for the lack of Android sync.
I am constantly entering appointments, reminders, new contacts, passwords and notes into my EPIM android and then sync to EPIM desktop every morning. Your program sounds much more capable, but I would lose a lot of functionality without the mobile platform.
Consider this a very strong +1 for a syncable android version...or a way to two-way sync with Android's native calendar, contacts and notebook. Then I'd be more tempted to buy a copy.

lisba f Thanks, Christopher for 7 day licence. I installed and tried DoogiePIM but it seems I have (again) the same problem as in the past: unfortunately, no UNICODE!
Mar 31 2020 at 7:09am Copy Link
BiteSpire @lisba: doogiePIM uses the default language set of your system and uses unicode throughout for characters in rich text formatting as well as the database. Unicode is also used for the different text and language files to tailor the UI (eg: Russian). You can store unicode characters in Contact names, Task subjects, etc. If you send screenshots or information about your system to me, I would be happy to see what the problem is.

There's a support ticket system here: https://bitespire.lightho...m/overview

or report it via the forum:

Remember to include as much detail as possible as I will need to replicate the issue with my own machines.

Cary Adams Seemingly complete app. But I use CalDAV and CardDAV servers for calendaring and contacts. I search the "community" and "support" areas and found nothing.

Can this work with CalDAV/CardDAV ... if I change a calendar entry on the PIM will it sync back to the server?

Larry W Would it be possible to get a 7 days license to try out the newest version? I installed this to try it out before.

Mainly looking to see if you added recurring tasks. Not Calendar events but tasks and also if you can add recurring bills into the finance module.

I also wanted to compliment you on how you answer the questions here now and in the past. You don't get offended and defensive by any of the questions and you give an honest and fast response. You also seem to appreciate comments and recommendations of what people want. So thanks for that, it makes me want to buy the program even more.

Thank you,
Apr 1 2020 at 6:49am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Larry: Thank you for your kind comments. All criticism is constructive to me so I'm happy for anyone to air their feelings, suggestions and ideas. I'm sorry to report, though. In the latest public updates, there's no recurring Task or Finance. The good news is, they have been implemented in a private beta. When the beta is stable, I'll include it into the public channel for everyone to try out. It could be a few weeks though. Watch this space:

If you still want a 7 day licence, just let me know and I'll be more than happy to send you a key.

PJ Software Buyer I'm playing around with the demo.. Very extensive software! However, is there ability to add custom fields? For example, I want to add a few fields relevant to my business in Tasks.
Aug 22 2020 at 7:08pm Copy Link
ron r I haven't seen anything about version 3 on the discussion boards except for:

The first V2 release was in January 2018 (not counting the beta):

I am very hesitant that V3 will be released within a year of this bitsdujour purchase. Could you somehow guarantee that this v2 bitsdujour purchase will get the V3 for free even if V3 is released longer then 12 months after this bitsdujour purchase? Please do not take this as a demand but as a request I normally do not ask these kind of questions.

The reason I did was because of the feature set of Doogie PIM, I have seen appearing earlier but ignored because I assumed this is the same the "other" pim's.... boy was I wrong...

The only thing I am missing (or could not find):
Syncing components notes, tasks, cal etc.. with google (or other)
Can Doogie sync Notes, Documents, Calender, Task,...etc online with other products or services (google...)?

Or better yet and Android version, from what I could find about it:
* 2016, Google calendar push (response: calendar will be enhanced this would make it also ready for android version)

* 2017, Android version in the works (or development started?)

* 2019, Android development stopped (deferred to concentrate on doogiePIM being a local database)

What it all boils to down to:
- Request: Purchases of this bitsdujour version are promised V3 even if V3 comes out after 12 months
- Question: Can Doogie sync with online services?
- Question: Is an Android version still in the pipeline?
Aug 22 2020 at 10:19pm Copy Link
BiteSpire @PJ: Thanks for the question. Tasks doesn't currently have custom fields, as such. However, Contacts does and I plan to add this facility to the Tasks, Events and some other records. Many thanks for your suggestion.
BiteSpire - Aug 23 2020 at 12:49am Copy Link
BiteSpire @ron: Wow! What a wonderful set of questions. Many thanks for taking time to being so concise. Believe me, it's appreciated. In answer to your inquiry.... YES, I can absolutely guarantee.... ANY purchase of a version 2 license from this point on will give you version 3 for free. I plan to make this release after the dreaded plague has calmed down, being a 2021 release. Android is in the works and the sync with Google is also part of the v3 pipeline. Lots of other requested items are also included, such as Widevine DRM, Recurring Tasks, Custom Fields and several others. More will be revealed in the coming months and alpha/beta versions will be made available to the public.

This Bitsdujour offer is my way of saying a big thank you to all feature requests and followers of doogiePIM.

I admit it's a slow walk to get there but slow and steady wins the race. :)

Stay safe, my friends.

ron r Thank you, your response gave me a lot of confidence.
I am now seriously considering this to be my second attempt to a PIM.

I briefly tested the portable version.
On the portable version I got the "windows protected your pc" blue pop-up.
Do not know what triggered it.
I have a clean installation of windows 10 with only defender running as an antivirus. I am assuming it's a "false flag".

After testing Doogie briefly I was really impressed, below some points from a beginner user perspective:

On first start of program, notify that a database needs to be create before the user can actually use Doogie.

No globally present 'HOME' button
Example: I entered a url in the addressbar and it actaully navigated correctly to that page!
But the main doog-page was now "gone" (where you see the upper menu 'File', 'Edit' ,... and Side buttons 'Home' , 'Calendar')
A global 'HOME' button which always shows, would be very welcome for beginning users.
There seem te be several ways to go 'HOME':ctrl_1, Dmenu > goto sections, addressbar 'doogiepim://home'
But this request is for beginner users.

Adding a new password item can only be done by the '+' icon
You can not do it by rightclicking a folder, there is no 'add item' in the right click menu
(This seems to be the case for other items to, that's why see also next point 4)

Make the 'INSERT' button the global key for inserting a new item
For example
- When user is in 'Bookmarks', the INSERT opens the 'Add/Edit Bookmark' window
- When the user is in 'Vault' the INSERT opens the 'Add/Edit Vault item' window
Of course when the user is editing the text the INSERT key has it's text editing functionality but the moment
the cursot is not whitin a text editfield it can then act as the above mentioned inser 'item'-function

Clipboard manager
Doogie has all (or at least, most) components already built in, note editing, tree structure to navigate through notes etc...
Only thing missing is:
- processing of the windows clipboard
- a hotkey that shows a mini window with the clipboard items
(Off course there would probably needed to make many more modifications but this is global outliner of the idea)

Take a rectangular screesnhot
When creating documents/notes this would be a very welcome addition
(The user could use an external tool for this, but because Doogie has so manu tools built in this would probably be a very welcom addition).

Split screen Doogie/browsing
When user is in for example 'Documents' the screen within Doogie would be divided in 2 parts
Left part Doogie PIM, Documents
Right part Browser
Now the user can switch very quickly between the 2.
Imagine the workflow enhancement by this (quickly adding text/images/other data from browser to Doogie).

To others glancing through this promotion I highly suggest reading through the website into what it's capable of and what you get:

This not your "standard PIM" it goes far beyond for what you would expect from a PIM.

BiteSpire @ron: With the latest version only released yesterday, Microsoft haven't updated their secure software list and added doogiePIM 2.2 yet. It normally takes a couple of days before MS recognises doogiePIM as safe. Rest assured, I certify and sign each release and please feel free to check for viruses. (I believe Bitsdujour do this too).

1. The message is there on the Home page when there's no database open, but not obvious. I'll see what I can do to make it more "user friendly".

2. On every window there's the top left "Menu" button to access all the main functions. You can access "Home" there. "User Friendly" ideas are forming in my head, thanks. :)

3. You can right-click in the listing area to add a new Vault Item or use the top-left menu button too. There's also the Ctrl+N key shortcut.

4. Hmm... I may have to think about that one. Thanks for the idea.

5. Ditto.

6. doogiePIM has a "Capture desktop area" within the right-click menu and on various record windows. This allows you to capture a rectangular part of your screen for quick pasting into your Document. Of course, Windows 10 users now have the MS version so you could also use the key combo Win+Shift+S to do the same thing but you do need to hit Ctrl+V or Paste the captured image into the Document.

7. You are free to resize your doogiePIM windows and create multiple windows where ever you wish. See the Menu button to "Open New Window" and size them up side by side. My daily use doogiePIM has 4 windows open across 3 monitors.

Again, thanks for the time and effort into looking at doogiePIM.

Doug Lietz @BiteSpire ... After doing a quick look at all of the things that dougiePIM can do, I came up with a list of (at least) 11 separate apps I am currently using, that could possibly be entirely replaced if I were to start using your software.

That is definitely an appealing thought! However, one of my big concerns would be the process of moving years and years of data from all of my existing apps, into yours. Do you have any migration tools that might help with this?

And a more specific question... would dPIM completely replace my need for using MS Outlook as an email client, for both incoming and outgoing (smtp) communications? One of the reasons I have stuck with Outlook for so long (decades), is because each .msg email record can be individually dragged into my Windows Explorer folders/subfolders database, where I organize and archive communications with customers and vendors. I'm also wondering if dPIM would even replace my need for using Windows Explorer to manage my customer/vendor folder/subfolder system...?

Is your in-built web browser built using the Chromium platform... like how the Brave browser is? Along with the ability to use the many 3rd party browser plugins that are available in the Chrome ecosystem?

Do you have a webclipper similar to what Evernote provides? And do you make use of tags for helping to categorize/interlink stuff, beyond just the use of folders?

Finally... I can see that you have been making slow but steady progress with the development of this dPIM app. You truly have accomplished a lot! But I gotta ask... is this a one man show... or do you also have at least a small team of other devs helping out? Reading between the lines here, I guess I am looking for some insights about long term vision for the company... speed of development, customer support, bug fixes, core stability, longevity... and even how you are planning to fund future growth.

Thanks in advance for your response to my questions :)
Aug 25 2020 at 9:31am Copy Link
BiteSpire @Doug: Thanks for taking time to look at doogiePIM and for your thoughtful questions. doogiePIM has various import options, mainly by CSV but can important email as MSG files too. I use doogiePIM exclusively for my research work as well as keeping track of development. All my email is done through doogie.

Of course, there's a huge difference between your current setup and doogiePIM. For one, all data is held in a single database, for security reasons. I would suggest you run your current system and doogiePIM in parallel for a while to see if doogie could really meet your needs.

As for linking and tags, there is a "flag" feature as well as many Category types that can be assigned to record. What's more, there's a special inter-record linking available to join things together.

For the future? Who can really tell? All I can say is that the financials of doogiePIM are very much taken care of for many a year and this is my fav coding project. I need doogie for my other work and couldn't do without it. Hence, it will always be developed as and when I need a function or there's a bug. Of course, user's needs are also taken into consideration as long as I can implement the feature and there's time to do it.

Oh and yes, the browser render is based on Chromium but I build this myself. It doesn't support extensions yet ;) The "web clipper" is a simple case of copy/paste, at present. I do a lot of that in research and found the best way is using the Documents as well as the Bookmarks to paste important information.

I hope this helps and sorry for the long post.

Doug Lietz Chris - Thanks for comprehensive (and quick) response. I appreciate it. Looks like I'm going to have to jump in and play around with this.
Is this 2016 video the only getting started guide you have? In it you indicate that others videos are coming. Where is the best place for me to learn about all the of the different parts of the program?

I take it that since this is a desktop app with no cloud access to the database, that it likely will remain as the name says a (single) Personal Information Manager (PIM), without any Team functionality... unless maybe if someone has network access to my hard drive. Is this a correct assumption?
Aug 25 2020 at 12:00pm Copy Link
David User In my endless search for the perfect PIM, there has only been one that I have paid full price for...and that is dPIM. It isn't quite PERFECT, but it's as close as it gets for my tastes and I am happy to know work continues. I also suffer from chronic buyers remorse... But when I consider this PIM, I feel peace...heh. I would love to see more import tools and tagging/organization but that will always be true. Keep up the good work my friend!
Aug 25 2020 at 11:28pm Copy Link
BiteSpire @Doug: The Getting Started video was going to be continued with various aspects of the more complicated sections within doogiePIM. I only had a couple of people express much interest so I didn't really continue. If you think this would help, I can start doing them again for version 3.

Indeed, the main point of doogiePIM is to keep your data on a local drive with no cloud access, other than using the browser. However, if you do have a very fast LAN then the database is setup for file sharing network between a couple of computers. Never try to use OneDrive or other cloud type features to store the database as these cloud solutions never take into account single file systems and could corrupt your database.

BiteSpire @Kevin: 4K DPI scaling improvement is on my list. I use a 4K myself but only at 100% using an increased doogiePIM font size. I agree this should be improved for other 4K monitors.

"Paste as HTML" is also on the list to include further HTML format, such as images. After taking a Masters recently, I have a need for this type of thing to research properly.

Thanks for the heads up on these and many thanks for supporting doogiePIM.

Rohs While I purchased this software some time ago because I wanted to support the development. I do not actively use it I encourage people to give it a try. As far as improvements, the things I would like to see are.
- easier if not automated input of information. For instance if the email client had rules or macros that could be used to help add information to various places. A tag in the subject line or body of an email automatically creates an appointment in the calendar. Love having the inventory, but will not abandon my current system application because I can enter stuff pulling fomr the barcode scanner.

-Some sort of syncing with my mobile device. My preference is for syncing without being locked into a cloud provider. .

-downloading of full websites
-being able to automatically parse contact information from the clipboard to the contacts

-Ability to handle audio notes/memos

I realize these needs might not be the same as others. I want to reitorate I feel like this is a great application you have built.

Mike B I've had PIM software where the licensing server became defunct so I can no longer activate the software. Fortunately the unactivated software would run in a read-only trial mode so I could at least export the data to something else.

Does an unactivated doogiePIM allow export?

Experience Version
Enhancement | Increased length of accepted "Web Research" text.
Pity that still cuts off because hence when does you can't use more advanced searches, is there a reason for cutting off more lengthy web searches?

If necessary? perhaps a limit of 500 characters would be better than 40'ish, Google won't break :)
Dec 4 2020 at 12:29pm Copy Link
BiteSpire @Mike B: Once you've activated doogiePIM with a key, the licence details are all stored in a file in the application folder called, "doogiePIMLicence.key". Once you have this file, you can severe the link to and never have to worry about bitespire going out of business. All you have to do is keep your key file in a safe place and copy it to the doogiePIM folder on other devices.

Getting data out of doogiePIM can be done with CSV export, either with the advanced search SQL or by the "File/Import or Export Data" command.

"Web clipping", there is a function in the upcoming version 3 which allows you to select a web page and paste it into a doogiePIM document, (or any of the rich text edit boxes), formatted, images, links and all.

William W. User During many a decade (I've been designing and coding software since the early PDP-11 days) I have never encountered a program of which the information on the home page, and the intelligent and very relevant and incisive comments, have been equal to the info and comments provided by this Bi5sDuJour offer of doogiePIM.
I am very impressed, and only regret having overlooked this program in the past.
Call me old-fashioned, but I am sick and tired of being googled, and a firm believer in the advantages of fast, reliable, and secure wired traansfer instead of wireless.
I am purchasing this program, and am looking forward to having my own "cloud" on a large-capacity thumb drive. Syncing between my differfent machines will be simple -- I will probably put a good syncing program on the thumb drive, which will access the PIM database on each computer by indirect addressing via a tiny address file in the root directory of each C: drive -- a simple matter of coding a small command procedure.
Many thanks to, especially, the developer, and, of course, to BdJ for mamking this program available.

BiteSpire @William: Thank you for your wonderful comments. I hope you'll enjoy doogie for years to come.
@bsr007: A full installation and a portable version is available for all licensed users. However, you can install doogie to a USB drive using the installation application. The benefit being, an existing installation on the USB will be updated rather than being a blind copy which has the risk of overwriting preferences.

bsr007 @BiteSpire: Thanks for your reply. If the specific Portable Version of doogiePIM is installed on a USB drive is it still possible to update it by installing the files over the top of the existing installation without losing preference settings? If the full Windows installation is used to install doogiePIM on a USB drive I presume the registry is affected. Is this correct?
