What are people saying about FastMindMap

John Cooper Wow! I'd say it's a shame that it's hard to find this piece of software though SEs with keyword "mind mapping software"! It covers most of the features found in other well-known names but the price is far reasonable!

Alain Lesage I must add to the above testimonies that I have been using Mind Visualizer since last August (2008) and it has become my favorite mind mapping software, altough I own paid-for licences to 5 different such software. Very efficient and intuitive interface and excellent support. In my opinion it is the best money can buy in this category and worth every dollar, even compared to free products.

Mary Wilson I tried the program out and liked it enough to purchase it. I like the samples that came with them. Could not get the demo's to work, but it is still a nice program and alot easier to use than the mind maps I made as a kid on paper.

Edwin Yip Hi Rune,

Just a minute ago we've added Norwegian(Nynorsk) and Norwegian (Bokmal) spelling dictionaries for MindVisualizer. But it's not installed by default and it's download-on-demand. Go to Tool-Options window, under the Spelling session you can find the "Download more dictionaries" button, click it and you'll see a list of dictionaries you can choose from to download.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

Edwin Yip Hi Mary,

For demo do you mean the video tutorial? Those are flash videos and you need to have Adobe flash control installed in order to get it work.

To download and install flash, go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Wm Shore Hi, one of the comments mentions it can be run from USB. Does this require any type of installation on guest cpu [I don't have admin privileges on my work machine, which is primarily where I'd like to use this program]? Many thanks for your help.

Edwin Yip Hi Wm Shore,

The portable version does not require any installation on the guest computer, all you need to do to run MindVisualizer off a USB stick is a double click on the file called MindVisualizer.exe

Thanks

Steve Newport Hello Edwin,

thank you for your answer. Can you also tell what the upgrade price will be after 6 month? Also am I allowed to install Mindvisualizer also on my Notebook (I'm the only user) does the license only allow 1 PC?

And finally: Do you plan to continue to add features or is it (almost) a finished product? Can you give a sneak peak what the future plans for Mindvisualizer are? Thanks
Feb 3 2010 at 12:07am Copy Link
0
Edwin Yip Hi Steve,

The "Single user license" of MindVisualizer allows two installations onto two computers as long as the two computers are owned or exclusively used by the customer.

MindVisualizer is a mature mind mapping software product, as you can see in my blog, new features have been being added continually but I cannot tell the details for the future development for now.

Regard the upgrade fee, while only 6 months are promised, actually no customers have been charged for new versions yet even if their free upgrade period has been expired. Generally, only a fraction of the original price will be charged for a major upgrade of the software after the free upgrade period.

Edwin Yip Hi Keith,

Sorry for the confusion, yes it's a mistake and it'll be corrected after this promotion on BitsDuJour.com. And We are responsible for this mistake, so all customers who purchase MindVisualizer during this promotion will get 12-month free upgrade period instead of 6-month only. You have my words.

Michael Dough I hesitated for a very long time to download MindVisualizer on torrent search engine http://www.picktorrent.com or not. Therefore I searched for some reviews and comments on the issue. I believe, I've made the right decision. I am going to download it. First of all, it is very user friendly. I love the way the branches and sub-branches are created without giving any thought. I like the way the branches stack and how easy it is to create different styled nodes. I have made simple and complex mind maps with ease. It's really fantastic)))

PG BNax MindMapping apps = one of those things on my SomedayMaybe list. Never tried one before, so I started with this one in anticipation of the upcoming sale. I have to say-- this app is a marvel!! Despite not reading ANYthing, I was able to figure out what to do and how to do it,  within mere minutes of playing around within the interface. I even managed to create and finalize a mind map, on a topic which had been vexing me for weeks, again, within minutes.

Oh, I AM sold!! I'll be back promptly on August 4th.

No relation to the developer. Not a sponsored/planted posting. Just mesmerized at how easy it is to manipulate things within this app, even though I'm a stone cold beginner. This is one time it will be my pleasure to dig into my wallet.

Peter Wa I was interested in MindVisualizer since I want to export mind maps into Powerpoint 2007. When I do this with the test version there occurs a unexpected error.
Second intend was to attach hyperlinks to a node and use these hyperlinks within Powerpoint. Unfortunatelly there is no export option (I tried PDF, JPG, Word), which preserves these hyperlinks.

Have you any hints?
Aug 1 2010 at 8:33pm Copy Link
0
Edwin Yip @ PG BNax, Thanks for the kind words! Yes, MindVisualizer "easy-to-use" is one of the main goals when MindVisualizer is being developed! @ Peter, Yes, as a matter of fact, PowerPoint export will raise an error with a specific version of PowerPoint 2007 , it seems that it does something to do with the OLE interface implementation of that version of PPT. And currently none of the export reserves the hyperlinks, but this is a good advise, thank you!

Peter UM It is a great program. I bought one within a few minutes of the sale opening. I have many ideas how to use it.

May I make a suggestion to the Vendor. Is there a way you can put the relations in different colors? and Is there a way to take out the main topic?

Since I can make a floating topic as my main topic, so the built in main topic can get in the way in my application.

The reason I would like multicolored relation is to differentiate the relations. An example would be If I was tried on a combination of two medications I could put a relation between two floaters. If I was given a third combo I can make a triangle between the three. or connect four medications etc. The color would tell me whether it is a 2 3 4 5 combo relationship.

Another addition would be If I can put two or three relationships(of different colors)  between two floating topics. Currenly I am limited to one relationship line
Aug 4 2010 at 12:18pm Copy Link
0
Edwin Yip @ Charles Ajouri, Yes, MindVisualizer works on Win7 Pro. @Peter UM, Yes, you can change the color of the relations: Select a relation by clicking on it; Choose a color for it by clicking on the 'Frame Color' toolbar icon which is the next-to-last icon of the 'Formatting toolbar'. By "taking out the built-in main topic", you must mean the built-in central topic, right? you know, the main topics can be deleted. As to the central topic, you can delete it unfortunately, you can just treat it as a floating topic anyway, I think.  Re. adding multiple relations between two topics, can you advise an example? Thanks!
Innovation Gear - Aug 4 2010 at 2:31pm Copy Link
0
Peter UM Thank You for your fast reply and your personal attention to our concerns

Regarding multiple relationships. Coming back to the example of medications, I can use several medications, connect two or three and make the relationships say green to show that the combo is a good combo but also make another relationship say blue to mean unavailable and maybe make a third relationship say yellow to mean say it might increase diabetes, a fourth relationship say gray to mean it may increase blood pressure.  So, a quick glance at the relationships I can immediately see what are the good combo green, what are the bad combos red etc. To type the relationships would be confusing and may take a lot of space.

Thanks again
Peter

when I choose Tools - Options - Map View and change the 'Topic relation caption style' (along the line and horizontal) i not see any diferences in the mindmap.

what im missing?
Aug 21 2011 at 6:31am Copy Link

Edwin Yip Hi Roberto, that option only affects the captions of the curved relations. Try add a curved (rather than straight) relation line between two topics and you'll see the difference. Hope it helps.

Mary Wilson Although I think the program is great, the customer service department is horrible. I purchased this the last time you had it offered here. When my system crashed, I spend over 6 months trying to contact your customer service department to get help in getting another copy. No one answered any of the e-mails even with a copy of the original e-mail. With this in mind, I believed this company was out of business till today. K X I've been trying this this out and there's a lot to like. I have iMindMap, and this has some similarities, but it seems faster and more intuitive to use the basic features of MindVisualizer As much as I enjoy iMindMap, MindVisualizer's portability is very appealing, so that I could use it at work from a flash drive.

As someone suggested, searching attachments would be useful. At least searching of notes would be very handy.

I'm hoping the program is still being developed and improved.

I'm using the trial on two computers and Draw Image works fine with MS Paint on one but not on the other (it gives an error message). Has anyone used the Draw Image feature of MindVisualizer with an alternative bitmap painting program?

I'm still on the fence (I prefer to buy programs I know are actively being developed) but it was also nice to see that MindVisualizer let me use my paid Open Type fonts. iMindMap 4 did not.

Roberto i cant help you with the ms paint problem

when i click on edit an image, Irfanview is launched and a msg says: "The program detected that the image editing program (default is Paint) is still running, if you are sure this is not correct, you can close this dialog window"

iMindMap maps look very "eyepleasing" but price is not so eyepleasing :)

K X Roberto, that's exactly the same message I get, some kind of conflict w/ Irfanview, but when I changed default bmp launch program to MS Paint, I still get a similar message. MindVisualizer works fine on the computer without Irfanview installed.

Edwin Yip @K X,
You can already search notes via the 'Search' or 'Live Filter' functions.

I'm afraid MindVisualizer needs MS Paint to use that 'draw topic image' function.

Edwin Yip @Marco, urrently, MindVisualizer can't directly import MindManager maps, however, there is a (compromised) workaround - MindVisualizer supports pasting outlined text strings, thus you can in MindManager copy and paste in MindVisualizer.

@K X, thanks for the info! That's a good and easy way to solve the problem.

Warren Russell I could find nothing here or on the company Web site saying whether or not the application runs on 64-bit systems, so I downloaded and tried to install it. It refused to install, saying it was not compatible. So I downloaded the portable version from the company site and unzipped it, and it seems to be running fine (although I haven't tried to do much yet).

Edwin, will it not install under x64? If not, how is the portable version different? What features would I be giving up if I used only the portable application?
Aug 24 2011 at 8:23pm Copy Link

Edwin Yip @Warren Russell, Yes, MindVisualizer runs on 64bit Windows systems (I myself use Win7 64bit), what error message did you see? And are you using XP, Vista or Seven?

The portable version is different in that you can put MindVisualizer in your flash drive and use it in other computers.

And the portable version runs on your system means that the MindVisualizer itself is 64bit compatible, maybe there is a little 64bit compatibility issues in the installer (however it' OK on several computers tested). I'll check it out.

Warren Russell Hi Edwin,

Thanks for the reply. Here's the error message:

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

I'm running Windows 7.

And yes, I know that the advantage of the portable version is that it will run on a flash drive. But what are its disadvantages if I run it on my laptop? If there are no disadvantages, why would anyone want to install and use the non-portable version?

Edwin Yip @Warren, One of the difference is that the installable version will put a menu item in the Start menu, and optionally can create shortcuts on the desktop and the Quick Start toolbar.

Re the problem, what's the path? What antivirus software are you using?
Innovation Gear - Aug 24 2011 at 10:13pm Copy Link

Warren Russell Here's the path:

D:\DL\MindVisualizer (Reg)\mindv_std_setup.exe

I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security 11.

Yes, I was aware that the installer would create shortcuts, but those are easy enough to create on my own. If that's the only difference, in fact, I'd actually rather stick with the portable version, which doesn't add to the complexity of my registry.

FWIW, I've already purchased the software. :-)

Thanks for the quick response and the great support!

Edwin Yip @Warren, thanks for purchasing and I hope you enjoy using it :) Re creating the shortcuts, that's because your computer skills are good, and the average users might even have difficulty find the files extracted from the zip package of the portable version, in that case, the installable version will be simpler to them.

Warren Russell Yes, Edwin, I agree. If there's anything I can do to help you narrow down the problem so you can fix it for those more inexperienced users, please let me know. I guess I was just trying to say that there was no need for you to rush to solve it, since I'm fine with the portable version myself.

Bruno Verschraegen Hello, task info does not seem to include a way of indicating who the task is allocated to. Is this planned in future?

Edwin Yip @Bruno, currently you can use icons to represent persons - not a perfect solution, I know.

Kimmo Lahtinen I tested the program a little and I think it is quite nice and good value for money. I started to wonder a few things:

- When saving the mindmap as a htm-file it seems to be only a picture? It is not "working".
- In the examples you mention about "task managment", but I assume there is no calculation or project management options inbuild?
- Am I correct that the program does not automatically add similar node I used before. I think it adds the default type node only and I needed to change it manually.

Edwin Yip @Kimmo Lahtinen,

1 - A text outline will be also included in the exported html, and this is an export example: http://www.innovationgear...Method.htm

2 - Calcuation is not in-build.

3 - You create each map from scratch.

Jim McGowan Edwin,
Since you use icons to represent people in your maps, can I add icons to the program? I have a number of icon collections plus many that I have custom-made myself. Are only certain formats allowed?
Thank you.

Jim

Edwin Yip @Jim,
Yes, you can add as many icons (in .ico format) as you want, and use the imported icons in your mindmaps.

Randy Martin I bought this the last time it came out. I love it. I use it daily for taking notes at meetings, planning projects, and general organizing. I have recommended it to dozens of people. I also own a $350 mind mapping program, but MV is much easier to use for taking notes and other real-time situations. Caution: For MV to be totally effective in any real-time usage, you MUST be able to type!!

Roberto Great software. I combine this one with mindmaple and imindmap.

If you are new to mindmaping try with MindVisualizer. Great deal.

Robert Skinner I own MindVisualizer and would definately recommend the product. The only thing that would make this app perfect for me is the ability to quickly add voice notes to my topics from within the application. Other than that, I have no complaints.

Edwin Yip @Roberto, thanks!

@Amt, maybe you can use MindVisualizer to visualize your goals, and brainstorm the steps (and sub-steps) needed to achieve each goal. As opposed to other approach, mindmaps in MindVisualizer let's you see the big picture in a very concise and colorful way.

@Robert Skinner, thanks for the suggestion. Currently I'm afraid you have to resort to an external voice recorder program, and after you get your recording saved to a file, attach the file as a hyperlink to the topics in a mindmap within MindVisualizer.

Roberto MindVisualizer (MV) is FAST. I know about the iMM preloader in v6, but MV is very responsive and lightweight. It loads in 2-3 sec in my computer.

For very dense mindmaps, i feel more confortable with MV results. Maybe i could get similar results changing the branch style in iMM, but i think i can get more information in less space with MV.

iMM does very organic mindmaps, but sometimes i want a more relaxed view (more business look like). It does a good schema for clients that dont know too much about mind maps, no need to show fancy 3d maps when you want they pay attention to your info :)

When i have to write more than a couple of words in the childs, MV does a good job. I use Box Branches in iMM for this. I dont make very deep maps, usually 2 levels.

The filtering is really nice. I really hate the iMM filter.

iMM price is painful, i think from the v5 to v6 not many features added but a major version was released (just my budget thinking).

MV has a great value/prize, the licensing model is per user, iMM only allows 2 installations (and DRM).

If you need pure buzzan mindmaps, iMM is the way to go... but if you want to get your job done fast give MV a try. And hey! give a try to mindmaple too, only 9 bucks per year and it does quite nice maps :-)

Edwin Yip @Tazzie, well, this is a tough question ;) First MindVisualizer's functionalities already fit my needs quite well and I want to keep it lightweight. Re bugfixing, well, I should have done it already... I've a solo developer, and maybe the answer will not be very satisfied, but I use a lot 3rd party SDK in MindVisualizer and after I've upgraded my development tool (which breaks backward compatibility) and I couldn't find new versions of some of the 3rd party SDK...The solution will involve rewriting quite amount of modules...I'll will still do it in the future.

@Jon, Yes, MindVisualizer runs on Win7 64bit.

Mary Wilson I currently own a copy of this program under version 3. Went to web sight when I saw that you had a special on the new version 4 today on BitDuJourn. Found nothing on comparison of Version 3 and Version 4. Nor could I find anything on any upgrade offers nor do I remember seeing a upgrade offer in my e-mail from you. Found service for this program lacking when I wrote a number of e-mails with no response from you due to problems I had with the program. This program does not allow you to use other peoples mind maps nor does your websight have a mind map library like www.thinkbuzan.com. So give me some good reasons for purchasing a new version of this software? What are the advanatages over Version 3.0? If I put in for a service call in the warranty period it will be answered this time? Will you be offereing upgrades for new version or do I have to spend $79.95 on a new version each and every year to get a new program with promised service that does not deliver? Will I be able to use the maps on my iTouch?

Edwin Yip @Mary Wilson, This is still version 3. Re your email, please check the old comments, I've posted a screenshot, and our later email conversation has proved that you didn't get response because your mail server blocked my mail server, I don't know why you are still mention it here.

Mary Wilson I also told you that I believed this problem was fixed as I talked to my provider. But you did not answer the rest of my questions about why I should upgrade to this new version as your websight is very poor in offering any of this information. What are the main differences between version 3 and 4? Do you offer upgrades or do I have to purchase a new version every year to get service? Are you going to be able to use the results on my iTouch and how will it be done? Will we be able use other individuals mind maps?

Petr Can mindmaps be nested? What i would like to do is have one mindmap sub-node be able to open into another mindmap?

Also, can you please compare your software with MindJet's MindManager? It is more expensive but a comparison of features would be helpful in my decision. Thanks.

Edwin Yip @Mary, this version currently featuring on BDJ is still version 3 that you have, upgrades will come but sorry, I can't tell the time frame for now, and once it's ready I'll send newsletter to inform all users. The current version of MindVisualizer only runs on Windows, and there is no plan for iPod Touch yet. You can user other people's mindmaps the those are created by MindVisualizer but other mindmapping programs, and I believe this is something MindVisualizer can improve on.

@Petr,It's not nested but I think it's similar - you can link from a node in a mindmap to another standalone mindmap, so with one click on to a topic in the source mindmap you can immediately go to the target mindmap.

Re. Comparing MindVisualizer with MindManager, well, one of the reasons I have developed MindVisualizer was that, after I tried MindManager, I wanted something much faster, much lightweight and easily to use...

Randy Martin Let me weigh in.

I have MV and love it. I have sold a dozen people on using it.

If you can type, it's very fast to use. I use it for note taking in meetings. At the end of the session, I show the screen to the clients and they're very impressed. Then I create a word doc version and email it to them immediately.

I can create linked maps, insert URLs/photos, etc.

Edwin as ALWAYS gotten back to me on my thoughts, ideas, and problems. Absolutely no complaints there.

MV does NOT do everything. I use MindWare to create graphically stronger visuals for presentations and to create hierarchy charts. I can import my MV map into MW and pretty-it-up. But for speed, MV is tops.

If you DO NOT have this, you should buy it.

K X I have a few mind mapping programs, but this is the one I use the most, because of its speed and the convenience of being able to run it from a USB flash drive.

The per user license policy also makes this easier to use on the computers where I need it, rather than some other mind mapping software I own which have very limited/restrictive installation policies.

I'd still like to see it actively developed and more features added. This is true of all software I like and use. Knowing that it's being developed rather than abandoned gives me more confidence in continuing to use a program rather than searching for alternatives.
