What are people saying about Folder Lock

SoftCollector Dear All,

I. I cannot see the description of the product above - is it only me, or has it not been written? Judging by the product's site, Folder Lock deserves to be presented well.

II. The policy here differs from the policy on the product's site:

- here: no discount for major upgrades (which, by the way, is rather uncommon),

- on the product's site: a 25% discount is offered to owners of v6 if they decide to upgrade.

Kind Regards,
SC

Michael K I am always concerned about the safety of my data when considering encryption software and therefore I look for user reviews on the net to ascertain real world experiences.

While the download sites give Folder Lock good evaluation ratings, I like to also see good user experiences.

The user reviews when scrolling down the page of the link below, give me pause for thought and I'd very much like the developer's thoughts in the light of these comments and experiences.

http://www.softpedia.com/...4018,.html

It would do Bits no good if our users have similar experiences as those described in the thread.

Thanks

Michael

SoftCollector There is always concern about the safety of files when they are encrypted with a password - if you lose the password, or sth goes wrong with the encryption program, you lose your data - it is an inherent risk. It is the same risk when a security software asks you for your credit card numbers to keep them 'secure in its vault' - then a hacker knows where to look.

The only secure piece of information is the one that is not on your computer, and has not been written down or a piece of paper. If you do, there is risk.

Hello everyone, this is Jonathan from NewSoftwares.net and I would try to clear up any confusion there are. Starting with Software Collector's query, the product description can be found at http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock
ii. Since the discount on major upgrade is for the existing customers, it can only be offered on our official site after email authorization.

@Micheal K, the reviews on softpedia refers to the older version of Folder Lock, all those issues have been fixed a long time back.

@SoftCollector. I guess forgetting a password is something that we cannot do anything about but as far as the software is concerned, even if you uninstall the software or even your operating system, all you need to do is download the software again from our website, install it and open your encrypted Lockers by giving the password.

About the hacker thing, we do understand the security that is required for sensitive information, therefore if you are using the Make Wallet feature to keep any of your private information, there is no way for hackers or anyone to break in. All encrypted data and information is only available after providing the correct password.

Regards.

Michael K The install policy states the software is licensed per computer.

Can you please say how this is implemented. Is activation to your servers required or a hardware footprint implemented for example.? And what is the process if a new installation is required due to a new computer or reformatted hard drive?.

I would also comment that it's a bit restrictive given many have laptops and PC's these days and by your policy, this requires 2 separate licenses.

Thanks

Michael

NewSoftware's Inc. Yes, this license is valid only for one computer and the hardware information is authenticated from our server. You can format your computer and reinstall Folder Lock without any problem on the same computer but if you want to install on a different computer, you would have to purchase a new license. We also provide discount offers for all our existing customers and purchasing multiple licenses.

Adrian Williams I was unfortunate to pay full price for the software :( I've been using it for a couple of months and it has been working fine. The ability to resize folders dynamically saves drive space until you need it. the usb feature is good but you need administrator rights to open the usb for read/write, it'll open read-only if you don't have administrator rights.
the only feature I miss from the safehouse software I used to use is the ability to 'fix' a drive letter on an encrypted drive. Maybe this feature could be added with minimul fuss?? Would this be possible Jonathan?

On the whole - a great discount for a good security program. easy to the eye, and simple to use.

Adrian Williams Hi Jonathan.
When opening (unlocking) a folder, you're given an option of auto-assigning a drive letter or manually selecting a letter from the drop-down box. I have some software (my accounts software) that opens files located on 'Q' drive. Folder lock automatically assigns the secure accounts folder 'Z' unless I manually select 'Q'. Would it be possible to allocate a user-selected 'default' drive letter for each locked folder. If that drive letter is already used, let folder lock assign the next available letter.
It's a minor point I know, but another step I have to carry out before running my accounting software.

Michael K I don't think I've come across a piece of software that I can't transfer to a new computer if it's uninstalled from the old computer.

Do I understand this is not possible with Folder Lock and that I would have to buy another license whenever I change my computer?

Thanks

@Micheal K That is possible when you have formatted your computer, simply uninstalling Folder Lock might not help, or if your computer becomes unusable, you can contact our support department and they won't disappoint you.

John H I would like to use this software but I use three separate computers in conjunction with Dropbox. I can only afford single user license software. Am not going to buy 3 separate licenses .. Will continue to use less than perfect Open source solution until software companies wake up to the reality that many serious users own more than one computer.

SoftCollector Dear All,

1. I have a question to all users of Folder Lock - what is the practical application for a software of this kind for you personally? What kind of information do you need to protect and from whom? Especially those of you who are buying the product to use at home? Why encrypt information, be it files or folders, in the first place? As discussed earlier, there are no unbreakable solutions and losing one's privacy happens every time when you use an internet browser.

2. And a question to the developer: what happens when I have encrypted files/folders and Windows crashes and has to be re-installed? What is the solution?

Kind Regards,
SC

Michael K Hi SC,
Your question concerning why encrypt when you just use a computer at home:

Last year my wife and I left her laptop in one of those security screening bins at Heathrow Airport - I thought my wife had picked up her laptop and I though she had - we were in the US before we realized it was missing. The result was a lot of unencrypted data that could have ended up in another part of the world with serious consequences because all our banking and credit card data as well as much other personal data was on the laptop.. Ever since that experience, I have been a lot more conscious of the need to protect data. Even when just using a computer at home, data is at risk. A friend's home was broken in]to and their laptop was stolen.

Fortunately we did get my wife's laptop back but it was a wake-up call. My friend was not so lucky.

The way I look at it now is, if your computer ended up in criminal hands through some mishap, would the data they have access to spoil your day. If so, it's time to encrypt and backup.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for your input which is always much appreciated.

SoftCollector Hi Michael,

1. Thank you for answering my question and for your kind words.

To further the discussion:

2. I have an HP EliteBook laptop which comes with security software (HP ProtectTools Security Manager Suite), working independently from outside the OS and requiring a password or fingerprint authentication. All top notch business laptops have this option and it is so notoriously hard to break if you do not have the password that some countries (for example Russia) would not let you enter, if you are carrying one of these laptops with you.

Sounds like heaven to someone concerned about privacy?

But I have never used the option. Never. All software breaks, and when something as essential and difficult as HP ProtectTools breaks, the result can be devastating. There is a 95% chance you will never get your data back.

To a lesser degree this applies to all security solutions, encrypting data:

1. Your data can - and at some point will - become inaccessible, because of software problems or a missing password.
2. All your sensitive data is kept at one place and if a hacker / someone interested with the proper knowledge of computers decides to get it, he knows where to look. Reverse engineering, password recovery software, etc. It is enough for them to check and see whether you have Folder Lock or RoboForm installed and they instantly know where to look and simultaneously what you consider to be sensitive information (what you have decided to encrypt). Now all they have to do is break the password.

So what is the result of all this - from a practical point of view?

1. You will probably have to enter and re-enter passwords every day, several times a day to get access to your data.
2. You will suffer the risk of your data becoming inaccessible to you for one of the reasons, described above.
3. Your data will not be accessible to your wife, children or colleagues (who - even if they were successful in accessing it - can hardly do substantial damage), but it will ultimately be accessible to anyone really interested and ready to invest the time and effort.

The solution?

The ultimate "encryption" is to not keep anything of interest on your computer. No sensitive information. Use only virtual credit cards, containing only sums equal to what you are going to spend for the specific purchase.

Even better, have nothing to hide, as a person, or professionally. It was Conficius, who said: "A room, full of gold no sentry can safeguard."

It was said thousands of years ago and sums it up nicely.

Michael K Hi SC,

Again, all very valid point that have caused me the same concerns you describe so well.

I've feared what happens if a mounted encrypted file, folder, drive or partition fails or there is an unexpected shutdown during the encryption/decryption process.

I've been using Truecrypt without any mishaps so far but then again it's only got to happen once for it to ruin my day.

You point about not putting the DAT on the computer in the first place is not viable for me - computers are such an important part of our lives I have to keep my private data on it - too much to trust to memory on just written in an unsecured notebook.

So given that every point you've made is completely valid I feel the solution for me is to encrypt and backup the resulting files frequently to an external hard drive. in the event of complete failure I see it no different to failure of a normal failure of an unencrypted file. I would have to install the based program on another computer and restore the encrypted backup there to recover my data.

Like you, I too believe I need to be prepared for a failure .and it's up to me to keep regular and current backups of the encrypted files.

Thanks again for extending the conversation with such thought provoking points.

Adrian Williams The online 'cloud' backup comes at price
Storage Space Monthly Prices
10 GB $5
20 GB $10
50 GB $20
100 GB $30
200 GB $60
500 GB $100
1000 GB $200
2000 GB $400

I'd like to try out the online backup compared to spideroak. What's the best way to trial the online backup ?? Would this be to set up an account, pay $5 and see how it goes ?
Spideroak gives 100GB of storage for less than $70 a year if you search for discounts. that puts folder lock as an expensive alternative.

Waxyr T. I'll probably get a lot of "not me, no sir" replies to this, but the reality is that folder lock / hide folder type products are often used to hide porn collections. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Of course, they have other uses (Michael K's example), and it is often these uses that software companies use to sell and market their product, but a huge proportion of buyers buy them for hiding porn, just as the primary (though not only) use for Private Browsing in web browsers is to view porn.

Michael K Thanks for the Cloud backup prices Adrian and also worth mentioning is that Sugar Sync provide 5GB of online backup free of charge and Mozy Home provide 2GB free. For personal data 5GB is plenty of space for backing up those critical data files we'd all hate to lose so it's adequate for my purposes.

SugarSync are also generous in giving additional free space for every referral you provide - even a referral for a FREE account gets you more space so there is no need to pay any monthly charge.

This is my personal SugarSync referral link for FREE space - if you sign up using it you will get an additional 500MB free giving you a total of 5.5GB of online storage free and I also get an additional 500MB so it;'s win/win. If you sign up directly by going to the SugarSync website yourself, you will only get the standard 5GB.

https://www.sugarsync.com...email&utm_

I hope Bits don't mind me putting the link in here and will consider it beneficial in the context of this conversation. Folks can then protect their encrypted and unencrypted files free of charge.from the sort of events Software Collector described so well,

Thanks

Adrian Williams I mentioned spideroak as it is an encrypted offline storage system. Dropbox isn't. I can't comment about SugarSync. That's why I was interested in the Folderlock option. Spideroak puts a massive load on the PC and I'm still going to try the folderlock option as long as I can cancel the subscription if it isn't what I need.

1) Save/encrypt new files on the flash drive?
2) Move the vaults to a different flash drive and still save/open the

Can you install vaults on USB drives and use them as questioned above for flash drives?

NewSoftware's Inc. @Nick,

1. Yes, you can either create vaults on your USB/External drive or create them on your PC and then move/copy them your portable drive as well. You can then open these vaults on any computer and access all your encrypted data. You can add, modify or delete your files as well.

I guess the above answers all your questions regarding portability of Lockers.

2. Well, there is no difference in the software that you download online or get on the disc except that you can keep that disc for a backup. You can always download the software from our website as well if you ever need to format your PC and reinstall.

Many thanks!

NewSoftware's Inc. @Nick, Folder Lock doesn't come with any scandisk drives. Its only available on our website and other shareware websites. We do not provide our software to any company to bundle it with their scandisk drives. If someone is providing a trial version of Folder Lock with their discs, this is something I am not aware of.

Please note that Folder Lock is a registered trademark of NewSoftwares.net, Inc. and if someone is providing any other software with this name, they are illegally infringing Folder Lock.

BUT ... As the blurb at the top of the page mentions using ''Folder Lock'' with USB Flash Drives, would FolderLock also have a similar problem if somebody uses ZENTiMO by Crystal Rich? [www_zentimo_com]

NewSoftware's Inc. @ JS. No, there is no such problem using Folder Lock to keep your data protected on USB/External portable drives. You can either directly create vaults on your portable drive or create them first on your PC and the move/copy them to your portable drives.

Gunderic Hagen Hi!

I was going to buy the Private Suite from STEGANOS a german Co until I realized they do not divulge their Co number to ask questions or receive support. Furthermore, they don't even answer mails with questions. Obviously, I have no interest in doing business with such a company. However, they do have feature among many which is the encryption of emails, Does Folderlock have this capacity too?

Further, I would be interested in buying one licence for my workstation and one for my laptop, if the discount is interesting. What would be the price for 2 then?

I would also like to have an unambiguous answer to the following question: Can I re install Folderlock if:

1) I buy a new laptop, (which I will do when Windows 8 is released)?
2) My HD crashes?

Thanks!

Gunderic Hagen Right now I can also send encrypted files with WORD attachments.

What I mean is to write an email (AOL for example) click on "encrypt" or whatever and the mail body would be encrypted,. The receiver would only need to know the password without having to download any software to read it. Is this possible with FL?

Also, let me know about the other two queries (price for 2 licences and re installation on other computers) as posed in my previous message.
Thanks

NewSoftware's Inc. @Gunderic, Well, if you buy purchase from BitsDujour, the price for 2 licenses would be 33.96 USD only. If you format your PC or change your hard drive, you will be able to use the same license to reinstall Folder Lock and If you change your computer, the license can be transferred to your new computer but you may need to contact our support department for that.

NewSoftware's Inc. @Detlev.. Folder Lock is currently available in English language only.

@Stan.. I am afraid the answer is NO, a Locker can be accessed across the network but the same Locker can not be opened by multiple users at the same time. What you can do is, open a Locker on the server and then share the virtual drive or the files and folders inside that Locker to be accessed by multiple users. You can also share level permissions on the files/folders inside just like you do it with normal shared folders.

Martin Brown I used a prior version of Folder Lock for several years, but the user interface changed for the worse and support was slow and not very helpful at times.

I migrated to True Crypt, a free open source method which works everywhere that Folder Lock works... flash drives, hard drives, even CDs and DVDs. (Folder Lock claimed to work on CDs, but I could never get it to function.) Open Source is important so that no developer created "back doors" can be added to the encryption software.

The only advantage Folder Lock has that is a perceptible benefit is that it does not create an additional drive letter when functioning, as True Crypt does. If that is important to you, by all means, try Folder Lock.... otherwise, check out True Crypt.

NewSoftware's Inc. @Tony Ng

You can store virtually any type of file in encrypted lockers. Encrypted lockers are compatible with all possible file extensions. However, I recommend that you don't use AXCRYPT, as Folder Lock's encryption standards are already the best -- using 256 bit AES algorithmic. Save yourself the extra effort and use Folder Lock as your standalone data encryption software.

May 23 2013 at 10:44pm Copy Link

NewSoftware's Inc. @VLM
Great question, Folder Lock has been used and appreciated by large U.S government entities, such as Tennessee National Guard and NASA. What’s more, large publicly held companies such as Wal-Mart and HSBC Bank all use Folder Lock to secure their corporate data. Finally, educational institutions such as Howard University have recommended the use of Folder Lock. Next, true crypt is limited in its data protection features, while Folder Lock gives you dynamic data security with 7 security features.

VLM Thanks Jonathan! Would you be willing to say more about this: " true crypt is limited in its data protection features"? In what way(s) it TrueCrypt limited? I can see some features provided by TrueCypt that Folder Lock does not provide, such as complete system encryption, hidden folders and systems (plausible denial), etc. What do you see, going the other way?
May 24 2013 at 3:23am Copy Link

NewSoftware's Inc. @VLM
True crypt does not offer you to create self-executable lockers which can be transported onto any portable data storage device, it does not have a history cleaner, nor does it have encrypted wallet features, finally true crypt does not let you send encrypted email content. The features in folder lock were developed solely on consumer demands, and therefore, Folder Lock caters to users practical data security needs.

Martin Brown I risk sounding like a Folder Lock-basher. I'm not - I used it for several years and really appreciated it's simplicity and, as I mentioned, its ability to not claim an extra drive letter when in use.

That said, the claims that Jonathan and its creators make are somewhat like a car advertisement, where only Buick has a 13 inch wide glove box, or only Volkswagon offers a turbocharged seat adjustment. So what? I want encryption to protect my sensitive files in case I lose a flash drive or my laptop gets stolen. How can I get that done most efficiently and securely?

Jon says that TrueCrypt cannot create self-executable lockers onto a portable device. And the difference between this and the ability to copy your TrueCrypt encrypted file from one device to another would be ........ what?

Again, I like Folder Lock. I paid for it and used it for a long time. But when I saw a degradation in the user interface and a stunning lack of support for a paid product, I moved over to True Crypt, a totally free, totally supported open source product. True Crypt is a standard - used by far more government agencies and universities and corporations than F.L.

T.C is flexible, contains far more encryption methodologies and is endorsed by Leo Laporte - what more could one ask for?

VLM Thanks Martin, I really appreciate your comments. I had the same sense, but I am not as experienced with either application. I had that thought, and you have confirmed my sense of it. Thank you!

wts Beware this company. I bought Folder Lock when last offered 5/23. Within a few days it reverted to the trial version due to a problem with my PC. Long story short, I answered every question from them about my purchase, but they did not give me information to re-register. Then they did not answer my emails and did not respond to any of my queries via the contact form on their site, either.

I have bought many products via BitsDuJour and have never dealt with a company as unresponsive as this one even when I had a problem similar to this one with another piece of software. I did exactly as New Softwares asked, and I can assure you that I did not overdo it in sending too many emails or using their contact form more than once despite their total lack of response. My last contact was sending them my new email address after my old provider had gone out of business.

They didn't even have the courtesy to offer a refund if they weren't going to make their product useable. Just nothing - no response at all after requesting and getting from me the information they already had on file from my purchase.

So beware dealing with New Softwares if anything should go wrong on your PC with their licensing scheme.

Angelina Smith This encryption software is a bargain here. I've tried true crypt & Zone Alarm and I can say this product is better in the sense that you can create portable, self executable lockers. Basically, you don’t have to have folder lock on the other end when you attempt to access lockers on a jump drive on a different PC.

bvssunnydale re the "Beware this company," at top, I also purchased it from BitsDuJour (probably the same date) and have had nothing but good experiences with it. My one disappointment (and I've contacted them about this, and they responded quickly), is that there's no way to run this in "stealth" mode (for example, at my office, I don't want my boss to know I have training videos (seriously) on my computer that I watch when there's a slow period (I run them from DVD's instead). FolderLock insists on advertising itself with a toolbar icon that would take our network admin all of two seconds to find (and he's terrible at his job). So, other than the inability to run it stealthily, it works great for me and the support has been responsive.

wts This is a positive followup to my Dec 23, 2013 highly critical report on this company.

I got tired of waiting for a response which never came, so I uninstalled the non-working Folder Lock during a cleanup frenzy a few days ago. Upon uninstallation, a browser page opened asking for the reason (this is a good practice that a number of companies use). I repeated my sad tale and left my email address.

The next day (!) I received an email from their customer support manager recommending installation of their latest version using my registration info from the purchase. When this didn't work I sent back an email with information that she requested. I received a quick response with new registration info. This worked! Of course.

She included the following note: "A single Folder Lock user-license is valid for only 1 (one) PC. In a nutshell, It will work on a single PC. Folder Lock switches to trial mode, under the following circumstances: If a user installs a new windows user license or an already registered Folder Lock key; he or she makes changes/upgrades the hardware on his/her PC e.g. new motherboard harddrive etc; logs in from another windows user account and sometimes even your anti-virus can prevent license registration, restricting communication with our servers."

None of those circumstances was relevant in my situation - I think there was a WMI issue on my computer that interfered with their licensing mechanism.

So if this rapid and positive response is now typical for New Softwares, then I withdraw my previous critical remarks about doing business with them. BTW Folder Lock is an excellent product, which is why I persisted so long.

Ricky Rick @ Ahmed User

You said: " ... if you have lost your password we do have a password recovery tool that you can use to get that password back".

So - are you saying FolderLock has a "backdoor" per se?

Other similar softwares say if you lose/forget your password you are out of luck because the Developer has no way of getting into your encrypted files without the user's password.

An example of one such program is RoboForm. They say if you lose/forget your password - there's no way they can help you recover it.

It would "seem" (I'm not accusing) that Folder Lock is maybe in ka-hoots with the US Govt as they (the US Govt) want any way they can to be able to break into people's privacy ... and especially when it comes to Encrypted stuff/files on a Computer. They absolutely want developers to have backdoors available to them..

Does Folder Lock in fact have a backdoor - or is your tool to recover a lost/forgotten password simply an OPTION during or after installation that would allow for such a recovery tool to work?

I have another program (I won't name) that gives an OPTION during install to allow for lost password recovery. If you check the box during installation and lose the password they can recover for you. If you don't check the box and then forget your password then you are out of luck and that particular developer can not help.

Hopefully Folder Lock works similar to the forementioned which gives a CHOICE during installation as to whether a person wants recovery available or not - otherwise I am not interested in spending money on Folder Lock which would allow it to be cracked in to.

Thanks
Ricky

Mats Thell Hi all,
This is my story with Folderlock.

I have been using this application before, for the "Portable Lockers" functionality. (Load an encrypted storage area direct from USB, only Local administrator access was needed).
But I got some strange Blue screen of deaths, which is not acceptable in my view. so I contacted NewSoftwares Support and I was total ignored by them (Michelle).
I had found a bugg and recorded everything on a youtube video for them to view but nothing was intressting for them.
Im myself a developer and have been working with other companies with similar issues. This was the only time I have been total ignored on my requests.
This is not acceptable from a customer point of view, so all I could do is to find another similar functionality.

I do like the function in the application but when I try to use this professional I need to have some guarantees that it works as expected, otherwise I should get some attention on support requests.
But none respect to customers or their needs from this vendor.

This was one year back, I have no Idea if this has been fixed as I do not use Folderlock any longer.
And I dont want an angry customer when using Folderlock's Portable Lockers functionality on there server with an outcome of server crashes.

I hope this has been fixes and NewSoftware have been made changes in theirs customer care/support organisation and they now have an great product.
If NewSoftware wants to contact me to straight out the issues, Im all open for that :-)

Thanks for reading,.
