Richard User Is this a subscription, AND paid yearly?
BitsDuJour never mentions that.
The Authors Website seems to ONLY sell subscriptions.

Also, why is only ONE install allowed per hardware footprint?
I understand the "one computer and one laptop limit", but not
what happens when a computer crash requires a full clean install
on THE SAME hardware (less a replacement hard drive, etc.).

GhostVolt is normally sold via a monthly or yearly subscription, but for today’s deal, we’re offering BitsDuJour customers a chance to purchase a lifetime licence which includes all updates for life.

The single installation per hardware footprint is a limitation of the licencing component we use, a clean installation of Windows on the same hardware should not cause an issue. If you do change hardware, it’s easy to move your licence to your new computer or hardware setup. You can do this via GhostVolt or, if you do not have access to your computer, just drop us a line and we’ll do this for you. Note: we’ll be updating our website to allow you to do this remotely too.

Randal H. I can't activate the software. The code from Bitsdujour after purchase does not work in the software where the activation code is entered, neither does it work as a coupon code when I follow the instructions in the video link from the Bits email.

In any case, just to clear up the confusion here’s the steps needed to exchange your BitsDuJour voucher into a GhostVolt activation key:

1) Head over to: https://ghostvolt.com/redeem-store.html
2) Click on the Redeem button for the edition of GhostVolt you purchased
3) Click on the 'Enter Promotional Code' link in the pop-up which opens
4) Fill in your redemption code you received in the BitsDuJour receipt email
5) Fill in your Name, and Email – no credit card it required
6) You will receive the activation code to the email you provided

Randal H. Hello @ steven User,
Thank-you, activation code received. What is missing from both Bitsdujour purchase receipt email and the YouTube video page is the link to the "Redeem" page, unless I missed it somewhere. Did a lot of searching but couldn't come up with it.
Another block I came up against was in using the "Files and Folders" tour; when I get to step 6 (add a file to your repository) there is no obvious way to move on to step 7, only the X to close at that point.

I've contact the guys from BDJ to add some addition info regarding the redemption of vouchers, everything should be OK now.

Rajeev Rohatgi Does this program require internet access AFTER it is installed and activated? I would not be comfortable with that. (Note that I'm only going to use it myself, without any team members etc., so don't require any sharing capabilities

Internet access is required for checking for updates (you can turn this off) and when you activate your copy of GV.

We don't collect any data as we're fully GDPR compliant.

Craig I'm testing the trial version. I've encountered a bug. If I delete a folder in the repository and then create a new folder with the same name, I get an error message that states -

Error

Could not create folder.

A folder named Test 2 already exists on your GhostVolt server or your GhostVolt database. Please enter a unique folder name and try again.

Stephen Kreyling Just need to get a confirmation on the product use term. If purchased on bits its a lifetime license one time purchase? I saw on the company website its monthly or yearly paid.

No. Each licence can only be used on a single computer at a time (they are transferable). So, in you case, 2 Solo licences could only be used on 2 computers simultaneously.

The Business edition may be a better solution for you, it comes with 3 users as standard but we can add an additional user if required.

The account you create is on your local computer only (or on your local server if using the Business edition). GhostVolt does not send any of your personal details to us, the only information that is sent, is the check for update - you can turn this of if required :)

If your concerned about what information is sent to us, you could install and use Fiddler to monitor the traffic sent by GhostVolt. Again, I can assure you no online account is created nor is any of your personal data sent to us.

Stephen Kreyling Since the software does not connect to your company and logins to the local account, if your company goes out of business, will this software still work.

I have had some companies go out of business and the software fails to work.

On the business edition, do all users have to be tied into one control center? or can they be independent with the extra features that this version offers?

steven User @stephen, should we go out of business, GhostVolt will work just fine.

With the business edition, you install a single instance to your local server and all users simply connect over the same network. If you have multiple servers running, users can connect to any where access has been granted.

Users do not install the full version.

Stephen Kreyling Thanks for the reply, this helped me to choose. Each is independent, and they won't always have access to the server, so the single version for each makes the most sense. Mainly laptops out and on the go.

Your licence will work on your Laptop or Computer but not at the same time - this is a limitation of the licence provider we use (LimeLM).

In order to switch between devices, you must first deactivate your laptop (Help | Deactivate) then you should be able to activate your GhostVolt on your Computer.

Just purchased 2 Solo licenses. What I would have liked to see appear in this Solo edition in a next update:

- File Comments (why should this minimal feature - without even a text editor be reserved for Business-users? As a 30+ year high-end IT engineer, this seems like a bit of an odd commercial choice? After all, this is purely plain text ...and may also be useful for a single user (!)

- To be able to lock the preview option, so that it is not necessary to press the preview button again for each file. I think there is still room for improvement, also for example when previewing photos that they are fully scaled so they fit in the preview window

- A more extensive text editor in Notes (e.g. with colors) Adding screenshots/photos would also be an asset. As well as hyperlinks, tables, ...

Thanks in advance to include this within the changelog(s) ;)

PS: As far as I see, the only way to change the location/drive of the repository is to ...reinstall GhostVolt?

1) Agreed. The initial idea was file comments would only be useful for team collaboration hence the non-inclusion to Solo.

2) I’ll add both the suggestions to the GhostVolt development backlog.

3) We already have most of your Secure Note improvement suggestions on our backlog, consider them bumped.

4) No need to uninstall but the process is very clunky. At the risk of sounding repetitive, seamless repository moving is on our backlog and due for production.

Stephen Kreyling Just a few comments: I bought 3 solo copies, the software has a lifetime updates so that will last me quite a while. I bought 3 copies so that you don't have to activate and deactivate all the time. If you have a desktop or laptops and they are on the move, you are best to buy a license for each, otherwise, the time you spend on activation/deactivation will in the end cost you more money in your time.

I agree with the notes, would be nice to have some features like right note built into the notes section.

Phil Me In I bought it, installed it, and it works like a charm. Nice UI and the step by step tour will get you up and running in no time.

I am wondering though does GhostVolt play nice with anti-ransomware softwares like Kaspersky ART and Acronis True Image, among many others. Those softwares are designed to react (and sometimes over-react) when files get encrypted.

Great question. We see most of our issues during installation as some anti-virus apps will wrongly flag GhostVolt(!). We’ve had no reports of encryption failure due to over-excited security Apps but that’s not to say it won’t happen :/
