Virus Scan for GhostVolt

Richard User Is this a subscription, AND paid yearly?
BitsDuJour never mentions that.
The Authors Website seems to ONLY sell subscriptions.

Also, why is only ONE install allowed per hardware footprint?
I understand the "one computer and one laptop limit", but not
what happens when a computer crash requires a full clean install
on THE SAME hardware (less a replacement hard drive, etc.).

steven User Hi Richard,

GhostVolt is normally sold via a monthly or yearly subscription, but for today’s deal, we’re offering BitsDuJour customers a chance to purchase a lifetime licence which includes all updates for life.

The single installation per hardware footprint is a limitation of the licencing component we use, a clean installation of Windows on the same hardware should not cause an issue. If you do change hardware, it’s easy to move your licence to your new computer or hardware setup. You can do this via GhostVolt or, if you do not have access to your computer, just drop us a line and we’ll do this for you. Note: we’ll be updating our website to allow you to do this remotely too.

Thanks
Steve

Apologies for the delay, I’m working within UK Time.

I trust your activation issue has now be fixed?

In any case, just to clear up the confusion here’s the steps needed to exchange your BitsDuJour voucher into a GhostVolt activation key:

1) Head over to: https://ghostvolt.com/redeem-store.html
2) Click on the Redeem button for the edition of GhostVolt you purchased
3) Click on the 'Enter Promotional Code' link in the pop-up which opens
4) Fill in your redemption code you received in the BitsDuJour receipt email
5) Fill in your Name, and Email – no credit card it required
6) You will receive the activation code to the email you provided

Thanks

Randal H. Hello @ steven User,
Thank-you, activation code received. What is missing from both Bitsdujour purchase receipt email and the YouTube video page is the link to the "Redeem" page, unless I missed it somewhere. Did a lot of searching but couldn't come up with it.
Another block I came up against was in using the "Files and Folders" tour; when I get to step 6 (add a file to your repository) there is no obvious way to move on to step 7, only the X to close at that point.

Stephen

steven User @Stephen,

No. Each licence can only be used on a single computer at a time (they are transferable). So, in you case, 2 Solo licences could only be used on 2 computers simultaneously.

The Business edition may be a better solution for you, it comes with 3 users as standard but we can add an additional user if required.

Stephen Kreyling Since the software does not connect to your company and logins to the local account, if your company goes out of business, will this software still work.

I have had some companies go out of business and the software fails to work.

On the business edition, do all users have to be tied into one control center? or can they be independent with the extra features that this version offers?

Jul 28 2021 at 3:00am Copy Link

0

steven User @stephen, should we go out of business, GhostVolt will work just fine.

With the business edition, you install a single instance to your local server and all users simply connect over the same network. If you have multiple servers running, users can connect to any where access has been granted.

Users do not install the full version.

M User Hello Steven,

Just purchased 2 Solo licenses. What I would have liked to see appear in this Solo edition in a next update:

- File Comments (why should this minimal feature - without even a text editor be reserved for Business-users? As a 30+ year high-end IT engineer, this seems like a bit of an odd commercial choice? After all, this is purely plain text ...and may also be useful for a single user (!)

- To be able to lock the preview option, so that it is not necessary to press the preview button again for each file. I think there is still room for improvement, also for example when previewing photos that they are fully scaled so they fit in the preview window

- A more extensive text editor in Notes (e.g. with colors) Adding screenshots/photos would also be an asset. As well as hyperlinks, tables, ...

Thanks in advance to include this within the changelog(s) ;)

PS: As far as I see, the only way to change the location/drive of the repository is to ...reinstall GhostVolt?

Jul 28 2021 at 9:18pm Copy Link

0

steven User Hi M User,

Thanks for the recommendations / comments. Good stuff!
1) Agreed. The initial idea was file comments would only be useful for team collaboration hence the non-inclusion to Solo.

2) I’ll add both the suggestions to the GhostVolt development backlog.

3) We already have most of your Secure Note improvement suggestions on our backlog, consider them bumped.

4) No need to uninstall but the process is very clunky. At the risk of sounding repetitive, seamless repository moving is on our backlog and due for production.

Cheers!

Stephen Kreyling Just a few comments: I bought 3 solo copies, the software has a lifetime updates so that will last me quite a while. I bought 3 copies so that you don't have to activate and deactivate all the time. If you have a desktop or laptops and they are on the move, you are best to buy a license for each, otherwise, the time you spend on activation/deactivation will in the end cost you more money in your time.

I agree with the notes, would be nice to have some features like right note built into the notes section.

If you're using GhostVolt Solo with OneDrive integration then everything will be backed-up for you automatically.

If you're using another back-up App, you need to add 2 additional folders, your GV Repository folder and the settings folder where you GV database is located.

On my computer these would be:

Repository= C:\GhostVolt
Settings = C:\ProgramData\GhostVolt

Alexander Deliyannis Hi and thanks for this deal, this looks like a very interesting product! Two questions:

#1 Does the GhostVolt Business 3 Users' version follow the same installation logic, i.e., 2 computers per user?

#2 I read "Each license allows installation on 2 computers, but GhostVolt may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them." What happens if I have a GhostVolt-encrypted file open in my desktop and I open GhostVolt by mistake in my laptop at the same time? Will I get a warning in my laptop that Ghostvolt has an open file elsewhere and can't start a new instance? Will it shut down in my desktop whether I've saved the file or not?

Cheers!

Jan 20 2022 at 7:47am Copy Link

2

steven User Hi @Alexander

1) No. With GV Business, the licence is associated to the computer in which GV is installed - (this is your GV Server). Your users then connect to the server from their computer. With this deal, you can have 3 users connecting to the server at any time. If required, we can easily bump your user count for you.

2) First thing, this clause is not applicable to GV Business as you can have any number of users connected at the same time. This clause is specifically aimed at those who have their repository located on OneDrive and syncing between 1 or more computers. Its really a mechanism to prevent OneDrive conflicts - we show a warning if you try to log into GhostVolt on more than one computer at the same time - you can, if you want, ignore the warning.

kydara
1. Has your software been audited, and if so, what were the results?

2. Does it encrypt files in-place (such as BoxCryptor), or move them into a container (such as VeraCrypt)? I ask this because if they're moved into a large container, then even a small change to a single file can cause the entire container to change and thus get backed up to the cloud again.

Jan 20 2022 at 9:57am Copy Link

1

steven User Hi @Kydara,

1) The App as a whole has not been audited however, the encryption module we use to has. Results here: https://securitydriven.ne...report.pdf

2) GV encrypts files in-place. Its a little more complicated than that under the hood to prevent temp files leaking data and when connected to OneDrive, to prevent plaintext files being synced.

Steve

GhostVolt Ltd - Jan 20 2022 at 11:01am Copy Link

0

kydara Thanks for that information. Has the one critical finding been remedied since the audit?

So to make sure I understand, say I have a folder with .JPGs, .PDFs, whatever, that I want encrypted. GV will encrypt them individually and leave them in whatever folder they're already in. Windows Explorer will see encrypted filenames and encrypted data if it tries to open them. These files can then be backed up to a cloud storage server (I am taking more about a backup service like Crashplan/Backblaze than something like Dropbox or Google Drive here), and if a change is made to one file and the backup engine detects it, only that one file would be re-backed up to the cloud Are my assumptions all correct? This is how BoxCryptor classic used to work before they went to a SaaS model.

Jan 20 2022 at 11:39am Copy Link

0

steven User @kydara, good timing as I was re-reading the audit report since it had been a while.

When you add your files to GV, they're moved to your GV 'repository' which you specify during setup. Your repository is a normal Windows folder, the difference being, all files are encrypted.

In terms of encryption, each folder within GV has an encryption key, so when files are added to the folder, its this key that is used to lock the file. This means that files in different folders have different encryption keys.

Getting a little deep here... all folder keys are encrypted by a single master key which is encrypted by your login password or rather, a key derived from your password via a special algorithm. Bottom line is, your keys and passwords are never stored in plaintext.

Robert User The e-mail receipt and the Bitsdujour page displayed after purchase has a section titled "Instructions." The instructions refer to both a Promotional Code and Redemption code. The redemption code supposedly comes in the Bitsdujour receipt. The instructions section states that the user must enter the Promotional Code/Redemption code on the developer's website, accessed through a link to https://ghostvolt.com/redeem-store.html. That page immediately displays what looks like a step before paying for the software at $49.95 and it also has the "Enter Promotional Code" field, and other fields, including credit card data, and ends with a button to "Pay $49.95."

The "Older comments" section for May 15, 2021, has the same "Instructions."

The "Instructions" text sounds like a "redeem" step is required in addition to using the license key (which is in the e-mail).

Is there a "Promotional Code/Redemption code" that the user receives? If not, the Instructions step should be corrected or removed.

2. Which encryption algorithms does it use?

1. No. GhostVolt is a secure file explorer alternative so all interaction with your files are from within GhostVolt.

2. GV uses AES in GCM mode. Full details can be found here: https://ghostvolt.com/hel...ption.html

Arne User Before purchasing, I downloaded and installed a trial version so as to test it.
Now I have the problem of not being able to register the program that I paid for.
I have uninstalled the trial version and when I reinstall the version I just bought It reverts to the original trial version. The registration for the BitsDujour version will not work.
Looks like I just lost my $28.50.

UPDATE.
I managed to uninstall it completely by using IObit Uninstaller.
So I was able to do a fresh install.
HOWEVER, the registration code that was given to me still will not work.
So still sitting here having wasted several hours on this and $28.50 out of pocket
with the email I got with the registration is a link to redeem the code.. Here they are asking for MORE money.
Beware! this could be a scam....

Arne User UPDATE AGAIN..

I got onto support at Ghostvalut and got the problem fixed..
The code you get from BitsDujor is to the activation code..
That code is to be used to redeem the proper code.
So all turned out to be well in the end..
This looks like it will be a good program.
So far I recommend it

Christopher Dean @steven User, I have a question regarding an existing license I have and tried to send a support question via your Contact Us page but I'm getting an "HTTP Error 500" error message. What's the best way to reach you for support? I'd like to get my current support question addressed before purchasing another license.

soo mi To Steven: have you/your team made any progress on the portable (at least for Windows) version of GhostVolt?

soo mi Steven: as an additional question, if I wanted to have my attorney able to use GhostVolt (I use Windows, she uses Mac, with both in different locations) to review some of my files for the purpose of having her able to SECURELY look at/comment on/share documents (e.g., contracts, wills, etc.), should I purchase a second Solo license, or would it make more sense to purchase the Business edition, because of the built-in collaboration features (even though there is not a common server)? And, thanks for coming back to BDJ.

Unfortunately, we’ve not progressed as much as we’d like with the portable version of GV Solo/Business due to other customer requests.

We do however have a portable version of GhostVolt available, GhostVolt Start. It free but limited in capabilities. You can find it here: https://ghostvolt.com/gv_start.html

GhostVolt is currently only availble for Windows so you would not be able to share your files with a Mac user. Again, a Mac version is on the development backlog but could be some way off due to ofther commitments.

Adrian Williams I'd also be interested in a full-featured portable version. I use Boxcryptor and would seriously consider moving over to Ghostvault because of Boxcryptors new partnership with dropbox and their new licencing. Ghostvault appears to be more transparent and the lifetime licence offer is appealing. One clarification I'd like is : Can Ghostvault have more than one repository? 2nd question : can the repository be located within a folder on a specified drive rather than the root. Setting the repository location only gives me drives as an option.

Stephen Kreyling If our hard drive fails and we can not get it to release a license, how do we get the use of the license again? or are we without a solution to this problem?

Mar 7 2023 at 3:54am Copy Link

steven User Hi Adrian,

Unfortunately, GhostVolt repositories can only be located within the root of a drive, e.g. c:\GhostVolt. However, GhostVolt does work within sub-directories as we do this for Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive - we’ll be updating GhostVolt soon to allow custom locations.

You cannot connect a single instance of GhostVolt to more than one repository I’m afraid. I’ve added this feature to our roadmap.

Thanks.

steven User Hi Stephen,

Right now, you’d need to let us know and we’ll update your licence, so it becomes available. We should have a self-service page soon where you can perform the reset yourself.

It’s also worth noting that you can install GhostVolt on 2 computers (If you need more, we can increase this for you for free) so there is a little bit of room for issues such as computers breaking.

Thanks

Steve

Adrian Williams Hi Steven,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Re : connecting to more than 1 repository. Can you close a repository and open another ie have only one repository open at a time ? I know they'd have to be on separate drives. That could be used for, say, 'personal' and a separate 'business' approach

Mar 7 2023 at 4:06am Copy Link

steven User Adrian,

GhostVolt uses client-server architecture which means you need to be running a GhostVolt server on the computer which is hosting your repository. Given your use-case is a portable drive, this will not be possible as your drive is a simple storage device and cannot run a windows server.

I believe the ability to connect to multiple repositories on different storage devices is a great enhancement to GhostVolt and will add the feature to an upcoming release.

Thanks
Steve

Adrian Williams I'm finding GhostVault very restrictive having spent a bit of time with it. Dragging files into Ghostvault works but dragging out doesn't. Also, if you have a program like Filemaker which tries to open another file in the same folder - it cant. Ghostvault doesn't integrate at all with windows explorer ie you need to use the bespoke explorer. Filenames are encrypted but folder names aren't. I can see Ghostvault uses a different approach to file management than, say cryptomator which creates a new 'drive' but gives full control via the native windows explorer. I also see the message 'uploading to server'' when the files are being encrypted to a local drive which worries me a lot. Having tried the demo I think I'll stick with Cryptomator and Boxcryptor.

steven User One of the core principles of GhostVolt is to keep your files and data secure at all times. That's why, when working with your documents, you use GhostVolt's secure workspace instead of Windows Explorer. As we all know, Windows has many security limitations that GhostVolt's workspace addresses.

If you need to drag your secure files out of the GhostVolt workspace, you can do so using the export function, which performs several security operations to prevent data leaks. For instance, plaintext files are automatically shredded to enhance security.

When you see the message "uploading to server", it means your files are being transported to your local repository via your GhostVolt server, as GhostVolt uses a client-server protocol. However, this message may be confusing and mistaken for uploading to the internet. We plan to update the message to make it clearer.

Thanks for trying GV!

Mustang Can files encrypted in Ghostvolt Shell be decrypted in Ghostvolt Solo and vice versa?

Dec 15 2023 at 4:53am Copy Link

steven User Hi @Mustang.

Due to the more complex way GhostVolt Solo/Business encrypts files, it is currently not possible to decrypt between the two Apps. We are however planning on adding the conversion in the near future.

Thanks
