Penjani M. Hi Adam,

This giveaway is for the standard edition ( which retails at $34.99 ).

Adam P OK, thanks. I was wondering it was the professional since the description mentioned about incremental backups.

Does it save the backups in a proprietary format, or in zip files / other common formats?
Mar 22 2018 at 11:46am Copy Link

Penjani M. Adam,

Full backups are saved in plain ZIP format that can be opened with any compression utility i.e. 7-Zip.

Because differential and incremental backups use complex methods to detect and backup only file changes, they can only be restored using IvyBackup.

Adam P I was asking cause it sounds like after 3 days we can't re-install the program, so then we won't be able to restore the differential backup.

Penjani M. Adam,

Just to clarify a few things: from the time you receive your license key information from BitsDuJour you have up to 3 days to register your copy of IvyBackup.

After 3 days, you will not be able to register your copy of IvyBackup with the promotion license key.

Please note that you do not lose access to any backups that you have made. Even if using the trial version, you always have access to all your backups.

Here are some details regarding access to your backups:

Mario Demi Hi,
in the Fine Print"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version and on your homepage you wrote buyers get updates for one year?

Penjani M. Hi Mario,

That is correct, a major version is usually released once a year. When you buy a license you'll get free updates and support for a year.

If a major version is released within 3 months of your purchase, you get the major version update for free.

HJ B I have read the "frequently asked questions on the Kudu website. I am still not clear as to how the following situation is handled.

A license is only good for one machine. If I do backups from that machine for a year, and then the hard disk on that machine fails - therefore the first machine an disk cannot participate in a transition to a second computer.
1. What must be done to make the backed up material usable on another machine? (as regards each of the three types of backup).
2. Can the license be transferred to the second machine, without additional cost?
3. If the user opted to have all backups encrypted, can the decryption of the data be performed on the second machine.
4. When a backup is performed, can windows standard file duplication utility be used to make one or more copies of the backup? Will those copies be equally usable to restore the backed up files?
5. Backups are mostly important to safeguard against machine failure or human deletion and modification errors. Machines that fail can sometimes have read and write errors before failure becomes obvious. Does Ivybackup include a function or utility that checks the accuracy and completeness of a backup?
6. If a computer has one or more external drives, can the material on the external drives be backed up in a seamless process with the material on the internal drive(s)?
7. If two or more computers use this software, can the backup be made to the same backup device or location for all of them?
8. If two or more computers use this software can a backup plan made on one of those computers be used as a template for the backup plan on the other computers, or must each computer be the subject of a separate, from scratch, backup plan?
9. If full backups are done, and the primary drive of a compute fails, will this system recreate the system and programs so that they will function on the same computer but with a different primary drive?

Penjani M. Hi HJ B,

I'd love to help answer some of your questions.

You're correct in your assumption, one license is valid for only one computer.

1. Ideally you'll want to set your backup destination as something that is not your primary hard drive i.e. a network folder, an external hard drive, a removable USB drive,, a Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or pCloud account.

You can transfer your old backups to your new machine easily. If you need help with this, send customer support an email: supportivybackup.com

2. The license is valid for only one active machine, so as long as it is used on only one computer, you don't need to buy any additional licenses.

3. The encrypted backup does not depend on the machine it was created on. If you have the password you used to encrypt your backups, you can decrypt them. The encrypted backups are universal, you can alternatively use a free third party tool like AES Crypt to do the decryption.

4. Yes those duplicate backups will be valid.

5. IvyBackup has built in functionality to test created backups. You can create a schedule that regularly tests all your backups.

6. You're free to customize your backup process so I don't see why not.

7. Yes, each backup file is unique so there shouldn't be any problem with using the same destination from multiple computers.

8. You can share backup jobs between machines by exporting/importing them. If you need help with this, send customer support an email: supportivybackup.com

9. Unfortunately IvyBackup does not create a backup of your filesystem or do partition backups.

H. H. @vendor
following questions:
1. is it possible to choose between disk-backup (containing several partitions) and single partition-backup?

2. is it possible to exclude certain files and folders from the drive-backup?
If not, can this feature be expected in the nearer future?
It quite of happens, that there are space-consuming folders which must not necessarily be contained in a system-backup.

3. Does the Rescue-Medium allow to recover drive-backup on different hardware?

Thank you for clarifying in advance

Penjani M. Hi H.H.,

Those are all very good questions.

Currently the drive image option creates an image of the entire drive (all partitions). While individual partition image backups are on our roadmap, I can’t say when that will be available.

Currently you’re not able to exclude individual files/folders from the drive image. Suffice it to say this is frequently requested and will be available in a future release.

And lastly yes you can restore the drive image to different hardware. The only requirement being that the destination hard drive should be the same size as the source drive or larger.

Colin McAllister I founds lots of info on types of backup, how to backup, how to check your backup, etc. But for me, the purpose of a backup is often so that I can track down a specific file I knew I had a while ago, but is not cuurently in my more recent docs, but is no required again for reference.
Can this software allow me to search for, and retrieve , a single file or a very small number of specific files? Thanks.

H. H. @Penjani M

Thank you for clarifying. The ease of use certainly is a pro argument for ivy backup and I'm considering supporting the development by making a purchase. But there is one really urgent feature request (suppose, that this may not be very difficult to correct)
Please implement a warning when making a mirror-backup that ALL existing files/folders from a previous mirror-backup in the Mirror- backup-folder will be DELETED and REPLACED by the current mirror-backup.
When running a mirror-backup there is no warning, that all existing files will be deleted and replaced (not only overwritten).
Of course IvyBackup shall backup the current state, but it really could become a source of trouble and data-loss, especially when additionally using synchronizing software which warns in such cases or allows to make a choose what shall happen with the exising files.
When a warning would popup one could decide to first rename the existing mirror-backup-folder via windows explorer in case one would like to keep the old content too.

When just making full backup the new backup does not overwrite the existing, it simply gets a new timestamp, so there is no problem

In case the warning will be implemented in the near future I would make a purchase.

H.H.

Penjani M. Hi Colin,

That’s actually a more common need than you might realize.

IvyBackup does let you restore individual files from a large backup which greatly saves time. If you create a full backup, that’s a ZIP file that can be searched easily. For the drive image backups, you can mount the image file in Windows and that shows up as a hard drive which can be searched easily too.

However, if you’d like more specific advice, especially as to your use case, feel free to send me a quick email:

Penjani M. @ H.H. ,

That is a really good suggestion and shouldn’t be too difficult to implement in an upcoming release. If you’d like to provide more details feel free to shoot me an email any time:
