What are people saying about JobTabs Job Search & Resume

Brenda Gann The requirements say it is possible to use this program without Microsoft Word by using their own editor. It seems that this is true, but the process is very frustrating.

Every time I load this program, it looks for Microsoft Word. It displays an error that my product key is not entered. (I have a demo of Word on the system.) I have to click to get past the error, then the screen comes up for me to enter a product key, so I have to click to get past that too. That makes it annoying to start this program.

When I tried to import a .doc file that was created with OpenOffice and try to edit it, JobTabs tries to bring up Word again.. which of course just brings up the request for me to enter a product key. This means I would have to convert all my files to .txt files and then edit them with the JobTabs editor. (That might mean that all formatting would be lost unless I could import in some format besides .txt.)

It would seem to be very easy to have an option to load the user's .doc file editor of their chosing instead of forcing MS Word. Or at least have the ability to handle it better if MS Word is not on the system and the user tries to access a .doc file that is in the info the program comes with.

John Coffey Brenda, I'm sorry you encountered this frustration. Fortunately, it can be circumvented altogether.

Open your resume in either Word or OpenOffice outside of JobTabs. From within JobTabs open our built-in word processor. You can do so by going to the resume tab and clicking the "Create New Resume" button on the toolbar. Select the contents of your resume in Word/OpenOffice and then paste the contents into the JobTabs word processor. Save the resume and you are in the clear. You now have all of the facilities offered by the other word processors, plus you have a list of tier one action verbs on the left hand side that you can click to insert into your resume, PLUS you can save your resumes to PDF all from within JobTabs! :-)

By the way, when you said,

"This means I would have to convert all my files to .txt files and then edit them with the JobTabs editor. (That might mean that all formatting would be lost unless I could import in some format besides .txt.) "

Not so. You never lose any formatting when using the JobTabs word processor. In fact, you can still use the JobTabs resume import facility. The key here is to save your resume as an RTF document. When JobTabs imports any document with an RTF extension, that is its cue to take over as the default word processor.

Allow me to mention to anybody who may be reading your post to clarify that the prompt for the product key is not from JobTabs. It is from MS Word. JobTabs has no nag screens of any sort as it is trial ware friendly.

Brenda, JobTabs is an extremely powerful job search tool that has been exhaustively tested. We failed to anticipate the circumstance where somone might have an installation of Word that prompted them for a registration key. Sorry. We will see if we can incorporate this into our test schema. Until then, please consider our suggestions in this post and give JobTabs another try. Thank you.

Sincerely,

John P. Coffey, President

John Coffey Brenda, like surprises? We had a meeting about the problems you were experiencing and reviewed our code. The code to prevent you from experiencing this problem was already in place behind the scenes. We just needed to make it accessible to you.

1. We eliminated all the code that tests for the presence of MS Word during the load of the program. JobTabs will now only look for MS Word when it absolutely has to know if it is installed. Therefore, you will experience no prompts when starting JobTabs. :-)
2. We added a new menu item to the Resumes tab. "Convert MS Word doc to JobTabs resume" is the name of the new item. Select any MS Word resume in the resume tree on the left, click this menu item, and JobTabs will convert it to our native document format on the fly! If you have a resume selected that is not MS Word, the menu item will be disabled.

Lest you fear that we hastily implemented some code, I want you to know that this is the same conversion procedure we use when our users have no instance of MS Word installed on their machine. We take any MS Word documents and with their permission convert it to JobTabs. We never put it as a menu item, but it is a menu item now.

In closing, having `half an installation of MS Word' in the form of a trial version was something we didn't think of. :-) Brenda, thanks for the great feedback!

Sincerely,

John Coffey Brenda, oops! I forgot to mention that you can download the newly created build from our site.

http://www.jobtabs.com/files/jtsetup.exe

Please do not download from the CNet site as that build is not the latest. Thanks Brenda!

Brenda Gann Thanks for the responses. It is good to see that you are willing to work with the users. I won't be able to try the new version right away because I am on dialup and the file is over 30 meg.

I have now been trying to go to a local job website at "go2worksource.com". I was not using a job search agent. When I try to save a job the program crashes. It happened twice. This would not seem to have anything to do with not having the product key for Word.

I normally use Opera but I also have IE 7 installed.

John Coffey Brenda, that is a real doozy. The site you are trying to save the job from is a secure website with an "https" prefix. These have always been persnickety. Sometime these jobs save fine and at other times they jobs save poorly, however we have never had an all out crash from a website.

If you have a site that misbehaves as badly as "go2worksource.com" you can always ,

» Select the text of the job. (Don't do a "Select All". That creates problems because it grabs all of the graphics as well).
» Copy the selected text.
» Click the "Saved Jobs" node on the tree.
» Right-click the grid and select "Create new job..."

This will open the create job form. It is used to create jobs from sources other than the internet.

» Using CTRL + V paste the job into the Saved Job dialog
» Add the job title and job ID and you are done!

Again, you only have to do this when a secure site is giving you a hard time. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Sincerely,

John Coffey Brenda, good news. The issue you were having with that site has been fixed in full. Better yet, you don't have to download a new install to get JobTabs to work. All you have to do is click the "Check for Updates" under the Help file and the newly compiled component will be downloaded. Exit JobTabs and then restart JobTabs and you will be good to go! You can download all the jobs you want from "go2worksource.com" that you want. They are saving perfectly on my end! :-) Please let me know if you experience same. Thanks for reporting this issue.

Brenda Gann Thanks for the fast response!

For those wondering, go2worksource is the Washington state official site for employment services.

I got the page to save.. but it only has the title of "Job Detail". That would mean I would not be able to look at the list to see what I wanted to look at because every job would have the title of "Job Detail". I had been saving jobs in a program called Local Website Archive. It also shows everything as "Job Detail". I had been saving job titles, if I applied etc in Access and the actual job posts in LWA.

I sent another issue to your personal email address. Just mentioning that in case it got deleted because I sent it with an attachment of a screen shot.

m w I now this question is a bit late, but I see that an 'install ID' is required to get a key. I;m not planning on performing a job search right now, so I was wondering if when I do and I reinstall JobTabs will the license I buy today work?

Warren Russell Help!

I have the same problem. I'm trying to buy--I have 10 minutes left--and I'm supposed to paste an install ID, but it doesn't tell me where to paste it from!

I'm stuck!

m w You get the Install ID from the Help/About JobTabs... dialog. Note that you have to right click on the ID and select copy because the ID is longer than is what is displayed.

John Coffey Warren, as MW says you get the InstallID from the Help file. I would like to mention that you don't need the InstallID to purchase JobTabs. By including the InstallID, we will be able to associate the any errors, inquiries or feedback from JobTabs with a person. FWIW, all inquiries, error responses and feedback from customers take precedence over trial users. The InstallID allows us to know who is who! :-) Good question. Thank you for helping me on this MW!

John Coffey Brenda, thank you for your order. :-) I like stories with happy endings.

Allow me to give you a tip. If you highlight the job title on the web page before you save it, JobTabs will save the page with that job title. For the jobs you have already saved, you can double-click the "Job Detail" default title and you can type in the correct job title. This we cover in the help file. If there is any ambiguity there, please let us know by clicking the feedback button in the top right hand window. Thank you Brenda and I look forward to serving you during your job search.

John Coffey Warren, welcome aboard! You made it under the wire. FWIW, (I apologize to bitsdujour.com if I am breaking any rules here), we have to keep the discount alive until 7 a.m. the next day. Because JobTabs, LLC is headquartered in Atlanta, we would be short changing people on the West Coast and the Pacific if we closed the gate at midnight EASTERN Standard Time. I mean at midnight EST, it is only 9 p.m. in California. So, we have to keep the gate open until midnight Guam time which is 7 a.m. Atlanta time.

All, it has been a very long day, full of ups and downs - a veritable saga with the issues that were posted here - and we are going to pack it in. Please do not misconstrue any lack of responsiveness with ambivalence. My colleagues Michael Eichen and Russell Eppright have been earnestly supporting me and they deserve all of the credit for solving the problems. I just delivered the answers they devised. I will follow up with everyone tomorrow. Kudos to you for leveraging this great resource provided by bitsdujour.com Great people who have been very responsive in assisting me with our day in the sun. Good night everybody!

Sincerely,

Warren Russell Thanks, John. I really do appreciate your responsiveness.

FWIW, during the online purchasing process, on the Personal Information page, there is a section labeled "Registration Information" with a field labeled "Paste the Install ID: :". There is a bullet beside this field to indicate that it is required.

I looked online to see if I could find an Install ID or an explanation of what it is--both on the Bits Du Jour site and the JobTabs site. I searched the online help and still didn't find it. I finally found a mention in the help file inside the application itself. Of course, this wouldn't have been available if I hadn't installed the trial.

Get some rest!

Brenda Gann Well, it isn't really a happy ending yet. I only got the software now because of the deal running out. I am still having issues with it. (I sent a private email about this.) This goes to show I should have downloaded the application before the day of the offer so there would be time to work out any issues.

I also had the issues that Warren talks about with the ID. It took me a while to find it, so first I tried to order without it. You -do- have to enter the ID. If you don't, it will loop through the order screens again without telling you that there is an issue. I finally found it, and then the order was able to go through. (Note that you do NOT need to reinstall the software to find the ID.)

The reason I ordered even though I was not sure if I would use the program is because going by the responses to this page, it would appear if I had an issue that it would be quickly taken care of.

About the east coast thing.. well I am in Washington state.. I know that Bits deals end before midnight my time... I wasn't expecting for the deal to run any longer than normal.

It is ok that you are going to go to bed before the offer is over... you were even answering after business hours which most would not do.

John Coffey All, the points you have tabled are dead-on and I apologize for any frustration you encountered. The InstalID prompt is very brief, however eSellerate confines me to a measly 25 characters or thereabouts for the prompt. If I could have provided an expanding box with more details or a verbose tooltip I would have clarified in more detail.

We may be leaving eSellerate. When I first started doing business with them, they were top of the line. Since they have been acquired by Digital River, there doesn't seem to be any drive there any more. While I am sure quality of thier security has not diminished, we had problems with registrations yesterday that we have never had before. People's contact info was coming through, but their registration names were not! All of the orders we receive online and then this tidal wave of orders pours in from bitsdujour and the data is skewed. When it rains it pours.

I think the right thing to do at this juncture is to allow bitsdujour to turn over their bandwidth and disk space to some other company offering their steep discount. I am going to ask every and all persons to email us at supportjobtabs.com or call us at 404-255-0248 moving forward. While we got a late start today, we have all finally made it in and are here to handle any questions anybody may have.

One quick item - the feedback link on the JobTabs status bar provides for anonymous feedback. If you do not provide a return email address or a phone number we cannot answer your question. Thank you! :-)
