What are people saying about Paragon Drive Copy 15 Professional

Tazzie If the license is per computer, is activation required with footprints?
May 5 2011 at 1:38pm Copy Link
Rich OBrien I downloaded and tried the trial copy but was disappointed. On Paragon's website it says the software can copy just a partition. However the trial copy was only able to overwrite all the partitions on a destination drive with all the partitions on the source drive. Also, does the Paragon software leave the source untouched. Years ago, I tried a different brand of partition cloning software. It created a bootable clone alright. But without asking me, it made the source partition unbootable.

Gray Lox Please allow a not very experienced user 2 questions :

Why is the programme called "Disk Copy..." here but "Drive Copy..."
on the linked Paragon site?

How many licences do I need?
I want to use the programme to migrate the contend of my old PC to the new one. The old PC will never be used by me anymore.
So would I need 2 licences - I hope not.

Thanks for an answer!
May 6 2011 at 12:13am Copy Link
DrTeeth @ Gray Lox, there are many freeware cloning utilities what will do that just fine.
May 6 2011 at 12:32am Copy Link
Gray Lox Thanks @ DrTeeth.
My explanation was very condensed.
In fact I want to use this programme for more than just cloning to another HD.
Based on my experience, the free tools don't give the same facility as Paragon does - e.g. migration to SSD.
I have already some Paragon programmes - mostly from Giveawayoftheday - and know that their naming of the programmes can be confusing.

At the moment I deliberate about whether I'll take today's BDJ discount or go for the Hard Disk Manager 2011.
Well, there are nearly 16 hours left to decided...

O I Paragon's System Requirements for the Windows installation package includes "USB 3.0". Is that true?

I don't have USB 3.0, so can I use Drive Copy 11 Professional with USB 2.0 or eSATA?

May 6 2011 at 2:09am Copy Link
Fred Schall Is this the same program as an imaging program such as Acronis True Iamge? I need an imaging program. Thanks!
May 6 2011 at 3:43am Copy Link
Rich OBrien Acronis True Image and Symantec Norton Ghost are imaging programs. Paragon Drive Copy 11 Pro can clone your bootable Windows partition to a second, third or more hard drives. If Windows won't start, go into your computer's BIOS (often this is done by pressing the Del key again and again when you first turn your computer on) and switching to your second bootable drive. This way you can recover from a virus attack or drive failure in a couple of minutes. When Windows won't start and Windows 7's "Startup Repair" function fails to fix the problem, it might take hours to recover using an image created with an imaging program. Hard drives are cheap and getting cheaper. Invest in a couple extra external hard drives that simply plug into your computer's USB port. When disaster strikes, a bootable cloned Windows partition is far more convenient than a Windows image.
May 6 2011 at 4:23am Copy Link
Fred Schall Thanks for the info......MY OS is WIN XP. I do not have Windows in a seperate partition on my HD. That is why I need an imaging program. Suggestions? Thanks!!
May 6 2011 at 4:46am Copy Link
Rich OBrien For those considering a partition cloning program, I'd recommend Casper because I just discovered Paragon Drive Copy 11 Pro deleted my 109 Gigabyte data partition without my permission. It was supposed to only delete my 40 gigabyte Windows partition. Until this major flaw in Paragon Drive Copy 11 Pro is fixed, I couldn't recommend this software to anyone.

Brian H Hi- I just saw this listed on the Paragon website and am very interested- glad to see it now featured on BDJ! Question- I am also interested in two other products: Paragon HDM 2011 Suite and Paragon HDM 11 Professional. Do either of these "all inclusive" products also already have the same functions of PDC 11 Professional, or does PDC 11 Professional have features that these other two products don't offer. If someone would please clarify, when they have a chance, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

RichU Can anyone tell me if there is a strategy to boot from an SSD, but to automatically have non-system, installing programs install to a regular hard drive?
In other words, how can a user minimize writes to the SSD.
Does the Paragon SSD module deal with this problem?
Thanks for any input.

Goran Janevski I don't understand why BDJ is nickle and diming us, their customers, with these Paragon "bits and pieces". Buying Paragon software piece-meal like this will end up costing us way more than buying the two all-inclusive suites below at full price!

Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2011 SUITE and the Paragon Hard Disk and Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 SUITE are the two programs, which, if obtained, would give us ALL of Paragon's excellent functionality:

So BDJ, please do us all and yourself a favour, and get the deal on these two, and let's be done with Paragon!!!
Sep 5 2011 at 5:50am Copy Link
Roger Thomasson @ Goran

We've offered both suite titles in the past. This year, in fact. Sorry you missed the promotions. You might want to take advantage of our 'I Want This' feature which will notify you if and when we reschedule a promotion.

But some people don't need all the extra functionality offered in the suites. For many, the features in Drive Copy Pro are more than sufficient for their needs. This promotion is for those people.

We've been working with Paragon for years. We like them, and so do our customers.
BitsDuJour Admin - Sep 5 2011 at 7:29am Copy Link
Goran Janevski Roger,

I just looked it up; I can see you offered Backup & Recovery 2010 Suite back in February, and I don't know how I missed that.

I am not finding the HDM 11 Suite, I don't think you ever had it.

No disagreement about Paragon, I love them and have used their software for years and years, and I swear by them when one of my computers gets in trouble.

One time a long time ago I was in the middle of risizing a partition with Paragon HDM when the power when out. I thought for sure I lost the partition, but when the power came back on and I turned on the computer, HDM just continued from where it was interrupted, no hickups. This is when I became a huge fan of Paragon. It's also when I bought I bunch of UPS power supplies.

So, I will take your advice, and use the "I Want This" feature. I am sure these will come again over time. And by then, maybe Backup & Recovery Suite will be version 2011!

Sep 5 2011 at 8:28am Copy Link
steve sorell The ad implies that this product is sufficient to allow you to migrate from one computer to another. I have been under the impression that drive contents alone are NOT sufficient to migrate because many programs (Microsoft in particular) make changes to the BIOS and Registry--for the specific purpose of preventing migration or re- installation without the original disks or install codes. Does this product avoid these problems?

Cheryl Rutherford This is the VERY BEST HD migration and copy tool there is on the market. If you do not purchase this at $19.95, you are really missing a deal. I have used this since it first came out and it is phenomenal.

I am getting ready to order this one as well.

Regarding WinPE being discontinued as of 3-30-2012.

Today I received an email from paragon saying that microsoft changed the licensing on WinPE and WinPE will NO LONGER be available after March 30th,2012.

1. How will this affect paragon programs built on Win PE?

2. Is another type of "winPE' program going to be created to replace WinPE?

Paragon Software Hi there,

To Rick -
If you want to use Winodws 7 and XP simultaneously on one PC, unfortunately, Drive Copy 11 Pro doesn't suit to you.
We advise you to pay attention on Partition Manager 11, because of you need to perform partitioing operations with your HDD before to be able to use the both systems, also Boot Manager will be needed you to select a system at boot time.

To disenchanted -
1. How will this affect paragon programs built on Win PE?
Starting of March 30 we won’t distribute ready-to-use images of WinPE
2. Is another type of "winPE' program going to be created to replace WinPE?
Yes, we will release special wizard that will build WinPE image right on customer’s PC. These wizards will be free for customers who bought our products. So basically nothing will be changed just a customer will need to spend 15 minutes to build WinPE image.

To Keith G. -
Partitions will be copied without problems, but you will need to reinstall GRUB on new SSD by yourself.

umike I want to run different version of an accounting software but the software only allows one version to be installed. I have tried using virtual PC in Windows Professional, but the speed is slow.

Can I use any of your software to help me run multiple version of the accounting software in a pc?
Jun 29 2012 at 5:57am Copy Link
Joe M umike.
I have found that with a lot of the software today, when you register the software with a product ID, it takes a footprint of the computer the software was install on. This is a way for the companies to help prevent pirating of their software. Nuance does this with their software. If you change something on your computer, the servers will sense that your computer footprint has change so it will not allow the program to run. Then you have to contact tech support and explain that you are not a pirate and you made a simple change to your computer. They will usually have to reset there server to allow you to use the program again. If you uninstall the program the servers are usually notified that the program was uninstalled and now you can reinstall it on another computer.

So I am not sure what the real advantage this Drive Copy program will have with licensed programs. It should copy your data and other less sophisticated software with no problems.

I don't think you will be allowed to run multiple versions unless the software license allows it to be run on more then one computer. Read the EULA for the software you have. It may say that you can install it on a desktop and a laptop, but you can not run it on both computer at the laptop at the same time.

To Al: yes, you will be able to make a cloned copy of your system drive with Drive Copy 12 Pro.

To Robert: There are a lot of new features in the newly released title. The Personal version is not longer offering and has been placed with Pro version. Please, have a look at this page to find out the new features -
Paragon Software - Nov 19 2012 at 4:41am Copy Link
Cary Adams @Nelson Carvalho... In theory you would hope that everything would work, but it may be that your Win7Pro license is tied to your old computer. If it is an OEM license, then Win7 will not fully function when transferred to your new computer. If your Win7Pro is not OEM, you should be able to reregister it to your new computer (the copy on your old computer would no longer be registered, and it would have limited functionality).

That same problem could occur for any licensed software that takes a snapshot of your motherboard, hard drive, etc. In many cases, you would deregister the software from your old computer, and then use your registration keys on your new system.
Nov 19 2012 at 6:41am Copy Link
Nelson Carvalho Hi Cary,
Correct. I checked my OS with software 'SIW' and got that my Windows is OEM. I believe that if I make a copy to the new machine, Windows will not work because it won't recognize the hardware. Thank you.

Michelle Bereza Hi. Can I move my Vista system to my new computer which is windows 7? thanks....Michelle
Nov 19 2012 at 8:04am Copy Link
Cary Adams @Michelle Bereza... The software is capable of doing that, but as I said in my post to Nelson, you may have problems with your Vista registration if it is indeed OEM. Another considerations is that your new computer may have hardware devices (video card for example) that aren't supported in Vista.

Instead, you might consider copying your personal documents from your WinVista computer over to your new Win7 computer, and leaving Win7 in place. Generally Win7 is regarded as significantly superior to WinVista. Of course I don't know the reasons you prefer to stay with Vista, nor do I know your PC proficiency, so I can only offer general suggestions to you.

Alan Chan So the next update is free with this purchase?
I want to back up/clone my Windows 8 Professional

Nov 20 2012 at 2:38am Copy Link
Paragon Software To Jeffrey Titamer:
Copy is available only in demo mode and can not be applied physically. There is special Migrate to 3Tb option in Copy Options (Copy Hard Disk wizard), please use it to make a correct copy copy to 3Tb drive.

To Tony Ng:
Using full capacity of 3Tb drives requires GPT conversion, but virtual machines do not support boot from GPT drives for now so virtual drive size is limited by 2040 Gb. DC 12 supports 2.2+ Tb disk but only for physical copuy, not for virtualiztion. You can not restore disk container (backup) from DC 12 by WinPE from DC 11, but if it about mirror copy - you may work with it in both versions.

To Alan Chan:
DC 12 is now works with Windows 8, howerer some specific OS-depend functions are not available (P2V, P2P, Migrate OS). There will be a free update for DC 12 in December with full Windows support by all wizards.

Software Guy Paragon, your answer to Candice above may need some clarification. Most that are buying migration software are migrating to windows 8.0 or 8.1. I suspect 8.1 will be the more popular choice as it has the familiar start button. So, will purchasers today be able to upgrade to the 8.1 release for free, or will it require another 50% in cost to upgrade??? Most people are migrating their win7 system to a new laptop with 8.1, or they will be updating to it, so this is important for many of us. Thanks.

No response from the support site directly, nor here on Bits.

I did not ask a difficult question, or so I thought.

This must be indicative of the level of support you will get form this company after a person actually buys a product; meaning, no support at all.

This is not good.

Toeknee B Hello, I got version 12 compact back on 3-9-13, can I Upgrade to this version? Does this version have a Lifetime License?
On another note, can you give me or email me a link for Disk Wiper 12 Compact (purchased 7-11-13), Back Up & Recovery 12 Compact (purchased 7-11-13) & Drive Copy 12 Compact ? I still have my registration info, but recently had to put a new hard drive in my pc and cannot find my software to install. I have searched your site as well, with no luck.

Thank you in advance!

Ed To I downloaded the trial version to check it out as the statement made: Have you been putting off buying a new PC or larger hard disk because you simply do not have the time or patience to reinstall all of your important applications? Or maybe you don't even know where all of your original installation CDs went? Well, today is the day that you have permission to start shopping, because Paragon Drive Copy 14 Professional makes quick work out of migrating software and hardware from any source to any target!
made me hopeful that I can now transfer my programs onto an upgraded OS, or from my old and dying PC onto a newer one, BUT . . I saw nowhere on the program where this was possible??

JW Will this version allow a full and complete Cloning operation on my existing C: drive whilst that drive is operating in the computer running the process, even if the program is being run on drive D: ?
I'm trying to get a 'safety copy' of my C: drive (an SSD) onto a 'USB stick' but every attempt I've made so far has failed to verify the copy.

Paragon Software @John Westbury: The product has a highly flexible, improved configuration for two different methods of hot processing: Paragon HotBackup and Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) With these technologies you can run backup and copy operations while the system is running.

Mar 18 2016 at 11:43am Copy Link
Duncan User Please can you clarify. This software doesn't appear to be suitable for Windows 10 but the Paragon web site says Drive Copy 15 "has support for Windows 10". Also, the fine print says it can be run a single computer AND a laptop. The conversation above says "one machine".

CFGuy Hi- does this program transfer "activation" from old to new hard drives- for example, if I have a copy of the program "Paperport Professional" already installed and "activated" on my current system, and I upgrade to a new hard disk drive, will the program still be "activated" on the new drive, as it was on the old drive?. Thanks.

Constantin Florea @Duncan User, I am sorry about the confusion. I have added Windows 10 to the Platforms section. However "Windows 10 Support" was (and still is) mentioned in the key features list at the top of the promotion page description.

Thank you for your prompt reply. My only concern is that this information is available before the return time for refund expires. None is stated in "The Fine Print", (where some have been as short as three days and some NO Return).

BitsDuJour Admin - Mar 21 2016 at 2:25am Copy Link
Kelly Hamblin I am always confused by these applications. In my own tech-challenged terms, this is what I want to do: copy my hard drive to another hard drive in such a way that I could then remove the current drive, replace it with the copy I just made, and then go on about what I was doing.

I've been told that is called cloning, and I've been told it is called imaging, and sometimes I've been told it is copying. But for now, my question is: Does this application do that or is it something else that I need?

Also, from looking at the Paragon Drive Copy screenshots, I am further confused by which of the (ugly - sorry) tiles I should choose. Should it be Copy Hard Disk, or DRIVE COPY - Switch to Full Scale Launcher. But that may be a moot question.
Sep 26 2016 at 7:59am Copy Link
Paragon Software @Kelly Hamblin

Yes, Drive Copy 15 Professional can do this operation for you!
You can click on Copy Hard Disk, which will bring you to the specific wizard, but you can also click on Drive Copy - Switch to Full Scale Launcher, which will open an expanded window with more options. From there you'll also be able to go on with the copy hard disk wizard.

Thanks. Very cool. Just what I wanted to hear.

One more question. Some years ago, I used Paragon Drive Copy 10 on an XP computer. It did one odd thing: It changed the name of some files in both the drive it was copying from and the drive it copied to, specifically extensions. It also changed the name of my User folder in the drive it copied to.

Has that issue been addressed?

Steven Avery I'm probably going to buy this one. My theory is that if you image, you need 2 or 3 different companies to be safe. (I only do light images, anyway, in the first month after an OS restore, after that I simply backup data.)

Macrium was my go-to for free imaging, but they dropped the Linux CD alternative in the new release (and it is hard to find the earlier one, but who wants to use previous releases anyway.). Being forced to use Windows PE seems counterproductive to wanting an easy image restore.

I always liked the Paragon signon, showing you what products you bought.

And their support looks ace, noting the Wilders section.

Ok, here is my question. I have to decide between Drive Copy 15 and Backup and Recovery ( I just used 14 Free ) . Backup and Recovery might be more appropriate, need to see the differences, does that show up on Bits in Professional version?
So time to go onboard as a paying customer for the extra features. e.g. I may even try some cloning.

HJ B A. A windows computer has both a hard drive, for the storage of the operating system, applications and data, and bootup utilities that are located the computer's ROM. If I use Paragon Drive Copy 15 Pro to clone my hard drive from Computer 1, an then use that clone to start up Computer 2, how does the ROM of computer 2 integrate with the clone?

B. If I clone Drive 1, can I thereafter optionally, from time to time, boot Computer 2 from an external drive or from its original drive?

C. If the answer to B is "yes" does that mean that I can have a series of computers cloned to different external drives, and then boot any one of those to the a master computer, without impacting the drive that came with the master computer?

D. Are there any known risks to this?

E. How long does it take to clone a Windows 10 2 TB drive and what are the variables in the length of time it takes?

F. What storage or other rules should be followed by a user in maintaining a computer drive so that a future periodic cloning will be successful and reasonably rapid?

Rich OBrien I'm hoping to find software that works better with Windows 10 than Casper. I tried the Paragon Drive Copy 15 Pro trial and removed it from my computer immediately. I wanted to migrate my Windows 10 system partition to the first of four partitions on a second SSD. Paragon showed "Unknown Windows version on C." But it did recognize Windows 10 on a cloned copy of C??? Then Paragon warned it was going to destroy all four partitions on the target disc. I canceled and removed the trial software from my computer. Casper 10 doesn't work perfectly with Windows 10. But it updates bootable clones of Windows 10 in less than one minute by comparing the source and target and making only necessary changes to the target.
When Paragon deletes the target partitions first, every file will have to be copied to the target and that will take at least ten times the time. Deleting all four partitions on the target is totally unacceptable, a sign that this Paragon software needs much more refinement.

BRUCE User I want to move windows Xp and all its programs from an old computer to a new computer running Widows 8.0. I want to put windows XP in a partition on the new computer. I want to do this via CD's. First, will this work and can Paragon partition the new hard drive and set up dual boot? Do I need a separate license for each PC?
Sep 27 2016 at 2:39pm Copy Link
I desperately need one of your software.
And I do not know which Paragon software is correct for my needs!

I have a new PC workstation with a complicated drive configuration.

My CURRENT Paragon software is Hard Disk Manager 11 Pro. I last used it in 2011 to partition the OS drives and internal data drives in my dual OS workstation with XP and Windows 7. After that initial set-up, I had no need to use Hard Disk Manager 11 Pro.

Last week, I bought a new dual OS workstation PC with Windows 7 and Windows 10. It has two OS drives (SSDs) and three internal data drives (HDDs).

I need to partition the data drives AND create a VM hosting XP. FOR THAT REASON, I visited Paragon to buy the latest version of Hard Disk Manager 15 Pro.

UNFORTUNATELY, I noticed Drive Copy 15 Pro and Virtualization Manager 14 Pro. SO I AM VERY CONFUSED about which software to buy.

1. I need to partition three internal data drives into two partitions per drive.
2. I need to create a VM Oracle Virtual Box to host XP. HOWEVER, I MUST, if possible, USE THE COPY OF XP ON THE Samsung SSD of my OLD workstation. That's the complex part.

I have vital legacy software installed my old XP OS SSD. The software installation disks are lost. So, SOMEHOW transferring XP from the old SSD to a VM is my only option. (My new workstation absolutely will not run XP outside of a VM. I tried a dual OS with XP and W10. It didn't work.)

PARAGON, please tell me which software to buy. (And after I accomplish the set-up above, I doubt I will use the software again until I get my next new PC. :-)

Thank you very much, Cindy

Paragon Software @HJB: ROM and clone of your physical hard drive are separated. You cannot clone your ROM. But your cloned hard drive won't have a problem with the other ROM on second PC.

Your questions should be cleared with help of our technical engineers, therefore I would ask you to write an email to with detailed information of your setup and task you want to do.

Please don't worry about end of this promotion, we'll find a way then.

@BRUCE User Yes, this is possible. Drive Copy 15 Professional comes with a few partitioning tools, too:

Basic Partitioning Features:

Create, format, delete, undelete, hide or unhide partition; set partition active/inactive; set, change or remove drive letter; change hard disk partition label (Volume Label); check file system integrity etc.
Automatic partition alignment

Automatically aligns partitions to boost drive performance

Please look here for full features:

For each PC, you will need a separatelicense, yes.

@Cyntia User

Please check this site for a great comparison of all features in our software products:

With Hard Disk Manager 15 Professional you will have a software product which should fit all your needs as it combines virtualization manager 14 professional and Partition Manager 15!

Cynthia User @ Paragon Software - THANK YOU...and Question regarding HDM 15 Pro

Paragon's comparison chart made it easy to figure out which software is needed for my purposes. It would appear that HDM 15 Pro is the better choice than DC 15 Pro. But two questions, please.

1. Is it fair to say that HDM 15 PRO has all -- or almost all -- of the features offered by the other Paragon software?

2. HDM 15 PRO can perform full back-ups & restorations of the OS drive?
*** HDM 15 Pro can do a back-up as well as software, like Acronis True Image, that is EXCLUSIVELY designed for back-ups?

LASTLY, Paragon should offer a DISCOUNT for HDM Pro 15 at Bits as an alternative to DC 15 Pro!

IN LIEU OF THE BitsDuJour DISCOUNT for DC 15 Pro, may I have a discount for HDM 15 Pro? :-)

Honestly, after initial set-up of my new PC's disk partitions and XP VM, I won't have a reason to use HDM 15 PRO.

BTW, Paragon needs to UPDATE its comparison chart to show the current features of VM...because the chart shows VM 12 Pro, not current VM 14 Pro.

Thank you very much for your reply, Cindy

anders I am the go to guy when frinds and family buys new PC's.
I remove stupid programs, change Windows 10-setups and then deliver the checked, secured and optimized PC to each person, ready to use.

I like to take a backup of that image/partiton/full HDD to make sure it is easy to go back to the "start" if needed. Prefered to have that image on a USB given to each person, so they can easily do this themselfs with remove assistans from me.

Does this program, with the license, allow me to do that in an easy way?
*I am asking since it clearly says "Each license allows installation on 1 computer."*

It's not the way this license can be used,as your behaviour is like the commercial one of an IT service provider company.
But what you do is: Install the software on your PC one time and then install your friends hard drives into your PC and create a copy of that drive. As long you're not using the software on each machine seperately, this would be OK.

anders @Paragon. Two feedbacks.

I would be interested in purshasing a portable version of your software where I can easily do a bootable image on another USB, and this, without the need to accually install Paragon Drive Copy 15 Professional on each hard drive/PC.

Great info in your comment. What do you specifically mean with "keep in mind the license agreement you do accept when installing the software", looking at how I would like to use the software?
I understand only one license can be active on one PC at a time in your offer.
However, I belive I can install Paragon Drive Copy 15 Professional on one PC, make an image, send it to a bootable USB-device, unistall Paragon Drive Copy 15 Professional. Next week, I install Paragon Drive Copy 15 Professional on next PC, and do the same process.

4 months later each of these two PC-owers need to go back to that image, will they be able to do that without refering to my license key?
