What are people saying about Photo Slideshow Creator Deluxe

_*_ I have a question(s).

The Bits Policy on the left states that "upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted".

However, on your site, one of the benefits of purchasing the Deluxe version is "Free upgrade to all new versions".

Is the Bits Policy incorrect? Does this purchase carry Free Updates for Life as stated on your site?

Please clarify this if you would.

Thank you

_*_ Lesley Knight, So, I understand clearly; this offer is not the same as if I purchased from your site directly at full price, correct?

At your site it states free update to "all" new versions, not just minor ones but major ones as well.

I am trying to understand if this offer at Bits is different from what is offered on your site for the same software.

Thanks again.

Lesley Knight There may be major or minor upgrades of the same program. For instance, versions such as 2.71, 2.75 etc. are minor upgrades, and 3.0 is a major upgrade. They are all free for the owners of the Deluxe edition, no matter if it was purchased from Bits or from the program website.

However, if we release a brand new application for making slideshows, this will be offered as a different product with a new name, though it may have a similar functionality to some extent. The owners of our older product get a discount when they wish to order the newer product instead.

Phil Tobin I actually know a fair bit about DVD slideshows, having been involved in this since Microsoft launched its now sadly orphanned Windows PhotoStory more than 10 years ago at a time when computer screens were 4:3 and home DVD players were anything but common.

PhotoStory was and still remains simply the best. No commercial software, at any price or from any developer, out-performs it. (And yes: I do know ProShow Gold and ProShow Producer, thanks.)

PhotoStory was then and is now, entirely free. But though it takes little if any time to learn, actually out-putting it and burning is a whole different ball game. I can do it -- do it all the time -- but anyone interested in Photostory is going to have to Google for Papa John and, from there, be prepared to devote quite some time to learning how to overcome the difficulties caused by a software created in and for an era that's now gone. (A software that, incidentally, Microsoft could've made an absolute fortune from, but, typically, failed to recognise that.)

I also, from time to time, get to see the DVD slideshows of others. They're either created using commercialware or possibly, some freeware other than PhotoStory, and I haven't seen one that hasn't been, well, terrible.

The fault is largely the developer's. A DVD slideshow, if it is to delight, entertain, amuse and above all, *convince*, needs to replicate as near as dammit the DVD *movie* experience -- not just a home movie, but a professional cinema / movie theater released production.

But do they,. these fatuous offerings with their hyped up "millions of transitions" and whizzing stars, exploding fireworks, rippling / fracturing inter-frame effects. . . NONE of which are ever seen in any movie or TV production? Of course they don't.

One look at a slideshow alight with whirls and whorls and whizzbangs, and you know you're going to have to suffer through an amateur's idea of what a visual entertainment is -- an idea actively fostered by developers who also know darn well that all the transitions in the world apart from dissolve, fade-in, and fade-out are just so much idiotic frippery.

For a DVD slideshow to actually work, it needs to implement the Ken Burns Effect of motion panning and zooming, and it needs to implement it well. PhotoStory does so easily and flawlessly, using key frame technology that was revolutionary when Ken Burns' pioneering Civil War series first appeared on HBO.

I've lost track of the number of commercial offerings that either don't incorporate the Ken Burns Effect at all -- in a nutshell, it makes a slideshow look like a movie -- or do so with such appalling ham-fistedness that it's impossible to get the darn things to work. I could reel off brand name after brand name here, but I won't. They're all in one way or another as dire as each other, yet come with price tags that are ludicrously expensive compared to what PhotoStory 3 does for nothing at all.

I've no interest in this particular BDJ offer and wish both the developer and BDJ well. But *if* this softweare falls into the category of exploding / dazzling / modern / ancient / contemporary transitions *alone*, and with no provision of user-timed scene length / transition length / and Ken Burns motion panning and zooming, then even at today's price, it's no bargain.

Happily, it may indeed offer more, in which case, congratulations to the developer concerned, because it's about time this entire software sector, riddled as it is with some of the worst commercial offerings that have ever been perpetuated, was shaken up: people deserve far more for their money than what they so often get.

Louis Gedo Hi,

2 of the above comments inquired about a Ken Burns type of functionality or effect....does this software offer that? I looked at some of your sample slideshows and it appears that there is a zoom functionality but the zooms featured in the slideshows were very short, shallow zooms.

Can you please tell us more about the zoom capabilities of this product? Is there a maximum level of zoom or a max length of zoom? Please give as much detail as possible.

Thank you.

VLM As Phil Tobin so rightly expressed, to have "Ken Burns effects" by itself falls far, far short of the mark. They must be implemented with a certain depth, they must be amenable to user-controlled timing ... speed of movement, duration of the effect.

Phil Tobin is right ... if any creative person at a real production house were to implement the kind of junk that most software in this category makes available, then s/he would be fired.

So I add my voice to the chorus of those who would like to hear from the developer, in detail, about these and other effects. If one were working at ILM or Pixar, might one be able to USE this software?
Aug 18 2012 at 5:37am Copy Link

Software Guy If one wants ken burns then phototomovie is the one to get from lq software. Have a look at photo to movie here
http://www.lqgraphics.com...omovie.php
NCH's photoshow is decent also and has 3 step pan and zoom - not nearly as sophisticated as photo to movie but OK.
For a minimal freebie try Photofilmstrip here
http://www.photofilmstrip...-Home.html.
If it comes up in german then click on the en in the upper right hand corner...
Picturetoexe has a big following because of their quality motion but the price is high.
http://www.wnsoft.com/picturestoexe/
Now in defense of today's offering what one can do is point to a folder and it will assemble a slideshow in just a few clicks, which is convenient. Cute and entertaining - yes - but not particularly movie style "professional".
Coming up is Slide Effect, a great deal at the offered price Note that only the standard version will be offered this time. Bummer because pro lets you merge to/from powerpoint. Again they rely on special effects for a flashy presentation - but for promoting ideas the text effects are good.
Aquasoft also has a decent slideshow creator, very competitive with NCHs Photoshow. But I think most people really want is the pan and zoom that Photo to Movie offers.
Would like to hear from others on what they think or have used as good slideshow software.

Phil Tobin @ Alex White: The Ken Burns Effect, as it's called, utilises key frames, exactly the same as Microsoft's free Photostory 3. How this works is simple to explain, but, in terms of software coding, anything but easy to provide.

You can work with one single frame to start off large and go in tight and small. But you're better off using two frames side by side. Or three. Or four. (With no transition time between 'em.)

They're all the same image. You decide to set a start point in key frame one. You decide to set an end point in frames 2, 3 or 4. It depends how long you want the duration to be of a motion. For a lovely, long slow pan -- from left to right -- let's say, of a river scene, or a beach scene, then three or four frames may be necessary. And it's easy. Dead easy to achieve. You simply use your mouse to define the size of the area you're going to "track" across the images. The finished result looks exactly -- and I do mean, exactly -- like the panning of a motion picture camera.

Similarly, with zoom. You can use one frame or two key frames side by side. Or more. Depends on the original resolution of the image (something too many developers of this kind of software always, but always, omit to mention -- it's irritatingly frequent a case of hey, just shove your pix into this program and wow, there's a slideshow. No mention of how on earth anyone can zoom into anything if the detail, the definition, the *quality* isn't there in the first place.

You start by using your mouse to set the full frame image and you zoom in to the finishing point in your second, identical, side by side key frame image.

You can decide -- in fact: you have to have the ability to do so, thanks to the software-- to decide on the duration, the length of time, of the zooming and the panning. The point is this: you are, in every sense, the movie Editor, the movie Producer, and the movie Director.

The commercial software I see far too often allows no such user control of panning / zooming duration. Heck: some of 'em don't even allow control of the duration of transition. They ask you to decide on a transition time between one pair of slides and that's it. The software makes that mandatory for all slides. I mean, come on: what kind of creativity is that?? And what kind of an editor / producer / director are you to go along with the dictates of some unknown coder who probably hasn't a clue about movie making, Hollywood style (or any other style)?

I've no idea if this software offered today implements key frame practice or if it's the not unusual jumble of pointy arrows and up / down / sideways left-right choices, none of which can match the ability of being able to use one's own mouse to create a sized area of one's own choosing, and then zoom, pan or do whatever one wants with it, for howsoever long one wishes such motion to be.

If this is, as your post seems to state, what this 'DeLuxe' version offers, then hats off to the developer. Really, truly, big hats. It's a major, major feature and why the developer doesn't give it the prominence it deserves in its marketing, I've no idea.

But if doesn't, and the motion effects are as rudimentary and as clumsily implemented as they are in oh-so much competing commercial software, then aren't you unintentionally misleading people about its capabilities???

@ Software Guy. PhototExe is several hundred $dollars and competing with ProShow. I don't find PhottoExe that intuitive but yes, the results can be good.

But we're back to the original question: if, 10 years ago, Microsoft could offer, for absolutely FREE, the *best* in key frame DVD slideshow production, and offer it still free today to anyone, anywhere, how come it costs hundreds of those aforesaid dollars to get anywhere near it with a commercial product?

Nothing I've come across so far has changed my mind about the way that commercial software developers -- present company excluded, because I'm not familiar with its product -- have simply ridden rough-shod over consumers and gouged every last cent out of 'em.

In which regard, I wish the Open Source developer you mentioned well. But he's got a hard row to hoe. And no, his software at this time is really too lacking in other features to compete with the glitz / glam that consumers have been conditioned to expect by major commercial interests. I've used it, but even I find it too rudimentary: the Ken Burns Effect is laudably handled, but little else is as yet of convincing appeal.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens MAGIX PhotoStory on DVD MX Deluxe (http://www.magix.com/us/p...on-cd-dvd/) could also be worth a look. I didn't try it (I used an older version once or twice), but they say that "customized zooms & panning shots" are possible, and I liked the old version I used back then.

@Phil Tobin: You asked: "if, 10 years ago, Microsoft could offer, for absolutely FREE, the *best* in key frame DVD slideshow production, and offer it still free today to anyone, anywhere, how come it costs hundreds of those aforesaid dollars to get anywhere near it with a commercial product?"

Well, Microsoft is - and already was 10 years ago - a billion dollar company with hundreds and hundreds of developers; their products are pre-installed on very, very many computers, and it's easy for them to invest several million dollars in such a software just for fun.

Other companies with such a product often start with a handful of developers and a few thousand dollars. That's no competition. The price can't be too low if the makers don't want to starve. And even a decade later, they are just a dust grain compared to Microsoft, so development is often much slower while they still need the money from their purchases to earn a living and finance the development of the next version.

As for the best software with a multitude of effects, we recommend that you try Photo Art Studio. It offers a wide choice of frames, masks, effects, greeting card templates, and more. Lesley Knight Louis Gedo & VLM,

Photo Slideshow Creator supports Ken Burns effects. You apply it by setting the pan X and pan Y values, and changing the zoom level. Key frames are not supported since this application is aimed at a wide target audience, regardless of computer experience.

The pan values can be set to a maximum of 100% and -100% (which makes the image disappear beyond the edge of the slide completely). To achieve the desired effect, you can position the image on the slide (with drag & drop), apply fade-in / fade-out for effects, and preview the effect in action right in the slide editing window.

Besides pan & zoom, there's rotation effect (360° is a maximum), and a selection of color effects - color hue, sepia, mosaic, and more.

It's possible to apply several effects to the same slide, as well as apply the same effect to all slides.

Pan & zoom values may be set to as much as you like - you can set the pan value to 100% / -100% which will make the image disappear beyond the frames at some stage. Same goes for all the other effects - e.g. rotate the image 360°. There is a large set of color effects to play with and combine.
The slideshow you mention is not pure effects demo, it's meant to be a piece of art and an inspirational sample. "Extreme" 360° rotations and things like that don't match the idea and the mood of this slideshow.
But technically, you can set any effect to a maximum.

Michael R. Nowadays, when many people have Full-HD equipment (TV, Blu-Ray with 1920x1080 resolution), can this software also use these?

What's the highest resolution of PC-Videos (DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K?)

If I have a bunch of pictures, is it possible to create a DVD/Blu-Ray which allows to see one picture after the other (i.e. not as video, but as a sequence of pictures) and perhaps even jump to a certain position. I think about creating a kind of e-book, which than could be read on the TV using the ordinary DVD/Blu-Ray remote control...

Lesley Knight Yes, the software can convert to full HD video formats with the highest resolution of 1920x1080.
There is a built-in DVD burner, too. There is no dedicated support for Blu-Ray, though, you can just create the video and then burn it to a Blu-Ray disc with external software.
Controlling the presentation manually is possible if you convert your slideshow to an EXE file.

Software Guy The program looks nice but the licensing terms are too restrictive for those with desktops and laptops. I can see an operating system limited to 1 install per computer, but I can't see a user app, especially one that you will not use terribly frequently (after all,how often do even power users make .exe slideshows??) Most use slideshow software like a screensaver slideshow and only occasionally (special occasions and for christmas / new years) make a slideshow of the kids or a vacation for distribution. And almost every slideshow I have seen is somebody showing me their pictures from their trip to the Keys or somewhere, so the software they choose simply points to a folder and displays whatever was downloaded from the camera, or if they have an IPAD, they just point to the folder and let you scroll through them at your own speed. And I must wonder - how likely is it that a camera buff that takes the time to make slideshows has only 1 computer??? Just my 2 cents...

Lesley Knight Our new slideshow software will be a completely different product, with some basic functionality similar to Photo Slideshow Creator or any other slideshow app, of course. The future app will provide more professional tools (e.g. the tools for creating animated slides with multiple layers and keyframes). Being a brand new product, this won't be an upgrade to Photo Slideshow Creator. However, we normally provide discounts to our regular customers.
Please note that Photo Slideshow Creator is not just a simpler app compared with the future release. It has its unique features as well, such as the slide background themes set or the color and lighting effects, so it's really worth having if you're into making slideshows.

Ralph W First of all, I am considering, purchasing the Photo Slideshow Creator. It has some neat features, however, I do have some concerns.

1. In testing the trial, I encountered a critical error when adding the pan & zoom effect. I was pleased the program didn't automatically close because of the error. However, I couldn't figure out how to remove the effect without losing everything I had created. I had no option but to start over.

Suggestion, if an error occurs, offer to remove the last effect or action taken to help the user without losing the entire project. With the error message, the program knows an error occured and if the effects are stored by the timeline of the effects being added, then it could offer ro remove one at time, starting with the last one added.

2. In the fine print, a Lifetime Return Policy is offered. If the issues can't be fixed based on hardware or other undetermined issues, will a refund be issued? I don't want to be stuck with something I cannot use, based on #1 above, since I do not what caused the error.

Thanks,

Lesley Knight Hi Ralph, thank you for your feedback!
According to our refund policy, we do provide a refund when there is a technical error preventing you from using our software, and our technical support team was unable to fix the error within a month, or unable to suggest a temporary solution.

As for the error you mention, none of our users have reported errors happening while adding effects to a slide, neither have our testers encountered anything like this. We'd be really grateful if you contacted us at techsupport@ams-soft.com with the details of the error (screenshot if possible) so we could try to find the reason and fix the bug.

VLM Lesley Knight - Thank you. You write: "Please note that Photo Slideshow Creator is not just a simpler app compared with the future release. It has its unique features as well, such as the slide background themes set or the color and lighting effects, so it's really worth having if you're into making slideshows."

I understand this thinking. However, in any event, one would use one or the other, not both products, on a given slideshow, correct?

Lonny User lesley, i saw another promotion that another thundersoft flash gallery maker was coming soon, would this be the commercial version or the cheaper personal one ? and when is it coming ? I already have smart show which i do not have the key, ams is a difficult company like that with keys etc, smartshow is the same as photo slideshow creator, i also have smartshow 3d but it works, i have over 200 software programs, many of them i have no key etc because i have changed computers, i would rather have thundersoft but cannot pay for the commercial one, , wondershare factory deluxe is the best but i have not bought it because there is no way to download a video on my hard drive or even share to social media, no video download file which is very stupid...ps i am in very poor health & cannot spend much money so i look for deals, i have a facebook site with 24000 likes, i make many slideshows, repair old pictures etc..i have noticed that i bought a premium 7 in 1 but never ever use it and cannot see how too, it was $ 19.00 wasted..

Lesley Knight @ Bart User
Photo Slideshow Creator always creates a video file, but one of the options is creating Web-optimized FLV/SWF video, complete with player that you can embed in a web page.

You need to start DVD creation, and in the very first step, you can add several slideshow projects or video files. Here's a screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/FGpsKKY.png
As a result, you'll get a DVD with chapters.
If you plan to add several slideshow projects there, it means that you need to create and save them first. Or you can quickly try it with video files.

karin User It's a bit confusing with the different websites and versions by the same company AmsSoftware. I bought Smartshow 3D Deluxe version 10.0 and there is an upgrade to version 12.0 now, so I don't understand witch version you mean by 4.31.

If you own SmartSHOW 3D, then you really don't need Photo Slideshow Creator. This is a more basic program good for beginners. If you're completely satisfied with SmartSHOW 3D, then you don't need another one. But some of our users find SmartSHOW 3D a little bit overwhelming with all the opportunities it offers - this is the case when Photo Slideshow Creator is a better choice. It's a solid program for making photo slideshows with music and some basic animation, and it's totally easy to use.

karin User Thank you very much for all the info ! Yes I'm very happy with SmartShow 3D and find it great and easy software to use compared to other similar. Mixed up the two versions that's why I got confused, but it's clear now.
