What are people saying about Servo

Michael R. Is there a public library available, where users can publish their own modules and other users can download them (for free) , rate them, discuss about them(like e.g. the Add-Ons in Firefox)?

Garry Taylor Hi Michael, there is no public library established yet, Servo is a brand new product, so there is no community built up around it yet.

However, Servo does come with the built in ability to make modules, the very same capability that I use myself to create the modules Servo comes with. You can certainly create them and distribute them if you wish, that's already something Servo can do, but we don't have a forum where users can distribute or rate them yet. It certainly sounds like a great idea though, and I'll take some time to consider what options we've got.

Cheers

Petr Hello,
Some pre-sales questions please:

#1. Does Servo have any support for creating new WordPress Plug-ins or editing existing WordPress plug-ins?

#2. Can Servo read existing PHP code and enable editing, or is is only for creating new scripts that it has hard-coded 'features' defined?

#3. Is Servo extendable? In other words, can a PHP programmer add templates or 'objects" to extend Servo? thanks

Garry Taylor Hi Petr,

#1 I don't know much about WordPress, but if plugins are in PHP you could use Servo.

#2 Yes, it can read/write existing code. Basically Servo edits regular PHP code but can wrap areas with special comments so Servo can change variable values etc. in a graphical manner. Give the demo a try and you'll see what I mean.

#3 Yes you can add your own objects, you get the 'Object Builder' which is the same builder that we use to make objects, basically you have 100% the same capability to make objects as we do.

Cheers

Garry

Anime User This looks like it might be interesting, but near impossible to setup against an non-local site. No logging, so no idea why it won't connect, no progress information, so you don't even know if it is working until the can't connect message comes back.

Zero troubleshooting information in the PDF manual, no place to go find any additional information. I'm not sure why they are trying to sell software that is in such an Alpha state.

Greg Looks interesting, and that there is a ways to go. The Forum idea might be a great next step.

Does this offer include lifetime updates for those of us who are getting in now when the product is new and immature? Please clarify.

Red Microuser Great concept and approach. Definitely for a new user though, the instruction manual is a absolute must. With it I like the program.

peter anon @garry

It seems pretty useful but what happens when we get snags?

ie
1) I downloaded the demo, tried to do a project with 2 pictures as output (with an imagemagik convert inbetween) and instantly got a CAN'T REDEFINE FUNCTION error.

2) I tried to do a file uploader. Still not use if that is 2 pages or 1 (1 for form, 1 for script). The 1 page version was a no go. The 2 page version was OK, but despite the form being called BLAH, it complained that BLAH was undefined.

The help PDF does not seem to address these roadblock issues?

This is usually why I avoid IDEs, because you spend MORE time learning their own idiosyncrasies and syntax then the original, but as yours purports to be pure php output, it seemed like t would be navigable.

But there's a lot of green php rem'ed out comments which are actually the instructions (variables).

Anyway, my hello world is the 2 projects above.

If I can crack those, then the ajax module alone would be worth me buying your thing.

Any ideas how I do that ?

Garry Taylor Hi Peter,

1) ImageMagick convert needs ImageMagick to be installed and set up on the machine running your site, be it on Windows, or on your Linux (or whatever) server. If that's all set up, and it still does not work, email me at gttheescapers.com with your PHP and we'll take a look.

2) Let me take a look at the PHP and we'll see what we can do.

You know what, I actually agree with you about IDEs, I tend not to like them (apart from Visual Studio, I do rather like that), which was why I made Servo, I'm a guy who does not like IDEs but still need more than an editor for languages I'm not familiar with, and PHP was that language a little while ago.

Servo does indeed output and work with regular PHP, so it's not the big blob of 'solution' files you get with some IDEs, and I know for expert users, sometimes IDEs can get in the way a bit but I am trying to make Servo lightweight, help new users, but not hinder experts, it's a bit of a tightrope though.

Cheers

HJ B I went to the company's website. It is barebones as can be, and poorly (legibility and content) presented. Here and there the company says the software include s"over 100 objects for both simple and complex tasks".

One would expect a list of those 100 objects and some concrete demonstrations of how they work. Nothing there.

In there responses, to questions asked today, the company says: " You can get the manual at http://instruktion.net/servo.html but I'll look into why the help button isn't working. " That link is to the relatively barren home page I have already described. There is no manual there that I can see.

The concept sounds great. The information provided, here and on their website, is useless and does not persuade me that I should risk the time to install and learn.

I will look at this again if the Company makes a more professional promotion of hteir product.

peter anon @garry getting it working (simple) would be a great start for me ;-)

Where a widget is in 2 parts, like the file uploader, I think many people would appreciate the overview plan (1 page/same page/commonalities to link) and the detail.

Generally you need a bigger FAQ.
) When this happens it probably means this...

For complex things like Ajax database pull, I think more video demos of an A to B actual use.

Did you misunderstand my question and is it handled?
The issue wasn't with imagemagik per se

I tried to use the same snippet twice (show an image) and it errored CAN'T REDEFINE function.
Which is normal in code ayk!

Presumably you define the function when we use a widget.
But have you covered us if we use it more than once on the same page?

SO I still don't know how to use something bog simple like the file uploader.
I have standalone code to do it just fine.
Why do I need to spend time working out what you have done, when you're supposed to make it simpler?

So I suggest you show the full working examples please.

Making (multi part) code snippets modular, was always going to be an issue.
But the glue is you showing us how they fit together in the "real" world.

BTW to save me losing a demo count from 9, the mysql database, do you use PDO or MySQLi, because the original php version (which was awesome) was depreciated out in 2012, right?

Also one of the most common things I need to do/know is how many records there are for a query (then often I need to display them in a alt coloured list (css).
Are there widgets for that?

Naturally I've missed the deal now, but if it comes up again, to go for it, I need to see a pdf or video with a walkthrough A to B of at least 2 things

1) file uploader (complete working example, with a text user intro)
2) an ajax/database pull query (i.e. 3 coloured socks, user interaction (form calls back the colours - aka I'm thinking a micro ecommerce store would be popular)

Also a more FAQ/wiki document

I guess that could all be handled with a 1 year forum access included, where you could pop in to solve examples and the users who got it, could help out.
We could also perhaps exchange snippets and make it 500 pretty fast ;-)

guy t974 Hello ;
the program looks very interesting but there's no contact / support / forum page on your site. Where can I get help if needed please?
Also, a complete list of objects would have been nice to have a complete view of its capabilities?
One more question : do you regularly add objects to the program ?
Thankyou for answering so I can buy a license with confidence as to the degree of support that is provided with the program.
And congrats on this great idea !!
