What are people saying about SoftColor Automata PRO

Michael R. If I understand it right, the user first creates a command-sequence, is able to save it as profile and than can use it for a bunch of images.

(1) Is it possible - after having created such a profile-file - to use it in command-line mode to single pictures, e.g. via a command-line call SoftColor.exe -f my_profile.cfg my_image_#*.jpg

(2) Is this profile-file editable/understandable via an ascii-editor too? So perhaps it would be possible to make some modifications by hand.

Petri Piirainen Michael R., Yes in Automata user makes first hot folder workflows. With Automata you can make multiple workflows which can be active or disabled. You can import or export workflow configurations as ascii-text files. There are import and export buttons in Automata's worfklow editor. Configuration files uses Windows INI-file syntax.

Automata doesn't have command line interface for image editing. But we have SoftColor Toolbox application which is command line based image editing tool. It has also batch processing and server features http://www.softcolor.fi/toolbox/

Louis H My first thought, when I saw this one come up for a Coming Soon deal after I had purchased PhotoEQ, was why did I spend $10 bucks on the one when I could have waited had I known this one would also be offered up at a great discount. Then I realized that I would not have hesitated to have purchased Automata if the discounted price was $30. And now I have both in my toolbox! :)

Thanks, Petri. (and all the folks at BDJ) for a great discount on a really nice application. (And I know I could probably get my $10 back via the 60 day money back guarantee, but I'd rather have both AND support a vendor who directly engages with the customers!)

Now, if only such a discount would be offered on the Toolbox version! ;-)

Louis H I understand what you are saying, Faisal. If I had three workstations I would feel the same way. Then again, $60 is a lot better than $300. Especially if a professional photographer or graphic artist found this program to be beneficial to their work.

At just under $19, for me, with one computer I use for my photography, it's still a deal. But you might want to reconsider allowing for at least 2 workstations, Petri, since so many folks do have both a desktop and a laptop nowadays. Just a suggestion.

Petri Piirainen Thanks for comments!

We have received today a lot of feedback about this single license key question. I just changed our license key term for personally owned computers. Now you can use a single license key for three personally owned computers (for example a desktop and a laptop computer).

Updated "License Key Terms"

Software Guy Great batch optimizer program. It is a very useful tool for photo enthusiasts. it is not really an editor in the conventional sense but does contain the most needed basic photo editing functions. What it is is a batch optimizer, adjusting white balance, contrast and saturation on folders.
As a standalone this is an ideal choice for most digital camera users who wish to optimize their photos quickly and easily. It is probably all that most users would need.It is exactly what manufacturers should include with each camera they sell.
For photo enthusiasts who require specific editing of single photos I would recommend complimenting this with a full featured editor also such as zoner (who has a new version out with a nifty quick edit panel).
Great price, responsive developer (read the older comments), 3 computer license = great deal. Worth it just to optimize those many folders you have downloaded over the years easily. This one is also a good idea as a gift to any of those that take lots of pictures but might not be into software or don't have much time to optimize batches of photos - like college students or busy moms.

One more note - the paypal option does not seem to be working properly.

Sarah K I have tested the software.
I have a problem.
If I am a PreProcess, or and PostProcess using Photoshop, the sequence is interrupted.
Nothing happens, when I save the modified file in Photoshop.
Only when I close Photoshop, it continues. This is cumbersome.
I find no setting for a consistent workflow.
How should the settings be?

Petri Piirainen Sarah,

When using Photoshop scripting with Automata’s pre/post processing it is important that Photoshop saves processed file automatically. Because if file is open in Photoshop Automata will wait until the file is saved in Photoshop.

If you want to edit (etc. local corrections / selections /masking) with Photoshop then I recommend to make one workflow which reads input files and then saves them to TIFF or PSD files. You can also make another workflow which will process images after editing with Photoshop. You can use first workflow’s output folder as input folder for another workflow. Automata process automatically files from workflow's input folder if files are changed.

For example:
input - photoshop_output - final_output
workflow1 (input = input & output = photoshop_output)
workflow (input = photoshop_output & output = final_output)

DroidLuvr I just purchased SoftColor PhotoEQ and I am kind of confused, because this Automata program sounds like it does the same (or at least very similar) things.

@Developer: what are the differences & why would I want to have them both??

Thanks!

PortablesFan I just logged on to ask what I now see is a similar question to DroidLuvr - I did not find any comparison chart, etc. on the Dev. site between the two programs. It sounds like PhotoEQ also has a sort of batch mode, can also save to "before/after" PSD layers, ...

What is the intended audience/use of each program?

Thanks for not one but two great discounts on BdJ, SoftColor Oy, as well as your responsiveness!

Petri Piirainen DroidLuvr & PortablesFan,

If you need daily multiple workflows for example for web, print and archive then Automata is a time saving solution. Audience for Automata are designers, prepress and photographers. PhotoEQ is more for home and small business image & photo editing tasks.

Main difference between Automata and PhotoEQ is that Automata works automatically on the background. Automata watches a folder or folders for image files, then applies automatic color correction, image editing / filtering and color management operations to image files. With Automata you can chain workflows to work together. You can create multiple workflows to Automata. Automata has also support for 3rd party scripts and command line applications. Automata and PhotoEQ uses same parameters and engine for automatic processing, you can use them together.

Software Guy If you are not familiar with SoftColor Oy you may wish to look over their informative website. Then have a look at the heart of the SoftColor programs here: http://www.softcolor.fi/a...orrection/

IMHO most people will be very happy with PhotoEQ which is also available discounted here:
http://www.bitsdujour.com...or-photoeq

You might ask what exactly is the difference between these two excellent photo optimizers - here are the words of the developer:

"If you need daily multiple workflows for example for web, print and archive then Automata is a time saving solution. Audience for Automata are designers, prepress and photographers. PhotoEQ is more for home and small business image & photo editing tasks.

Main difference between Automata and PhotoEQ is that Automata works automatically on the background. With Automata you can chain workflows to work together. You can create multiple workflows to Automata. Automata has also support for 3rd party scripts and command line applications. Automata and PhotoEQ uses same parameters and engine for automatic processing, you can use them together."

The developer's comments were posted in the older comments, which is also suggested reading.

Use of either of these optimizers is usually the very first step in photo editing, meaning it is the first thing you would elect to do to all of the pictures you just downloaded from your camera. Then you may follow it up with some creative editing.
AND, one license allows an install on 3 computers. At 83% off, that is a great deal.

Petri Piirainen Latest 1.3 update for SoftColor Automata includes new time saving photo workflow feature. Now Automata process automatically entire sub-folder structure inside input folder. This means that if you drop folder / sub-folder structure with images to input folder Automata will clone folders to the output folder.

For example: c:\input\demo1\demo2\image.jpg -- c:\output\demo1\demo2\image.jpg

Petri Piirainen @Danny. Each of these application are separate products. All our applications have same automatic color correction, image editing and color management features. But workflows and usage is different for example Toolbox is command line application and Server is server-side version of Automata. Automata can have multiple batch processing workflows running simultaneously and PhotoEQ has one batch save workflow.

MK I'm running the trial just now.
I have a program which generates 32 bit colour, large size graphics files. It will generate around 30 of these, and I end up importing these into a MS Word report. So if I can get their file size down, that's good for me.
So I end up going through my graphics package and manually saving to 50% size, 8 bit (256) colour PNG files, which takes a bit of time.
So what I have is the need for a workflow that will take 32 bit PNG and resize to 50% 8 bit PNG and save. I can do the resize and save in Automota; but is it possible to reduce the colour from 32 to 8 bit? I can't see a setting for that. Thanks in advance.
Jul 17 2014 at 3:45am Copy Link
0
Petri Piirainen MK,

You can use Automata to make this 50% resizing and 8bit conversion workflow.
Automata saves currently only 32bit PNG files. But we have made an extension which saves & convert 8bit PNG files. You can download Automata's "Post Processing Command" from here: www.softcolor.fi/docs/make8bitPNG.zip

Then just unzip and add make8bitPNG.exe ass "Post Process Command" to your workflow. Guide: http://www.softcolor.fi/d...kflows.png

Gde Swart I've been playing with Automata since early this morning. It does what it claims very well. While I don't have an immediate use, I have needed this kind of utility in the past (and will likely need again soon). This is much more functional and prettier than my current method of batch processing images. Faster too.
The UI is a little different with a small learning curve, but well worth figuring out. It is much more powerful than my first impression led me to believe and non-destructive processing means my original images are safe while I experiment and learn. I see this saving me a lot of time and trouble.
A big thanks to Soft Color and BDJ for this deal.

Constantin Florea @Bertie Brummel, Our e-Commerce uses the email address associated to the BitsDuJour account under which you are logged in when purchasing the product.

However if you want, you could update your email address associated to your BitsDuJour account to the email address associated to your PayPal account and then participate in the promotion. That can be easily done by you from your profile page (notice the Edit Profile menu on the left side of your profile page, if you don't see it right away please bring the browser zoom down to 75% or lower until it shows up):
http://www.bitsdujour.com...les/Bertie

There is also a possibility that you participate in the promotion as things are now and I will make a note and at the end of the promotion, I will relay all purchase information to the vendor of the product specifying that in your case, the email address which should be taken into consideration is your PayPal email. In this case of course I need you to let me know at notify@bitsdujour.com, your PayPal address so I can forward it to the vendor.

Rod User I can't find any reviews for this software anywhere... Either the people using it want to keep it a well kept secret, it has virtually no users despite the long list of companies that they claim use it, or it's not that great... I'm kind of edgy even installing a free trial for software that I can't find any reviewers or recommendations for anywhere, not even here.

How does it actually stack up to lightroom?
