What are people saying about Sothink SWF Quicker

BitsDuJUser Hello,

Are there any plans for the following bundle as a package offer here?

Sothink SWF Quicker + SWF Easy + SWF Decompiler

I am interested but they are beyond my budget to modify a couple of buttons per year.

Thanks

Jon K I've been considering purchasing this, along with you SWF Decompiler over the past couple of weeks, (hoping to see the SWF Decompiler on here again soon!) and the one question that I have is support for the new adobe releases, specifically CS5 and the Flex 4.0 SDK. When do you anticipate supporting these and what kind of upgrade policy is there?

LU Hello Jon K, I too would like to know the upgrade policy for this product.  Have you emailed the developer, SourceTec, or received an answer?

Stephane M Hello,

I would like to know more about license terms and upgrade policy as well. I did search on the web site but I did not find anything very clear.

Thank you in advance.

LU I don't think they are going to reply.  Personally, I have tried several times with different email address that were valid for a reply on their upgrade policy but have never received a reply.  I have noticed that they have two separate websites and both of their upgrade policies are different for the same products.

They might have a good product, but I have taken them off of my website because they have terrible customer support in my opinion.  If I was you, I would be careful of purchasing from them.

I hope this makes it to the blog page without being edited because it is very true.

Bxxxx Oxxxx The Sothink products all have annoying activation. After a couple of PC changes you just get a message that there are no activations left. There are other equally good products available, if you want to avoid Crippleware .

It would be a great idea, if Bits de Jour had a Crippleware index on each and every product

Many great programs are completely free from annoyment
and can be migrated to new systems without problems,
These vendors should be encouraged.

If you have 200 programs on your PC and half of them are Crippleware that require complex activations,
it is better to leave the Crippleware behind at the next PC migration.

PBMCMLXXI Totally agree with above, the activation is a major pain.
The only company whose software I use does not allow the end user to remove/deactivate the product prior to formatting/reinstalling the o/s etc. It involves having to wait 24-76 hrs to get a response back from support resetting activation count.

The seem adamant in not allowing the end user the options.
How hard can it be!! Adobe let you....
Sothink really need to step up to the mark, address user concerns and rethink/revamp their activation technologies.

Brad I must also agree with the above two posters, the activation processes at SoThink are at the very least a huge annoyance at worst they border on harassment of the customer.

I have no problem with activation being used as a tool to insure the product is used per licensing agreement, however this company has taken activation pestering to a whole new level. In fact I cannot name any products that I own where the activation system is as flagrant and pestilential as SoThink's product activation. Believe me I own a lot of software, I'm sort of a software junkie. I don't have an axe to grind, I actually like SoThinks product offerings, they are not buggy and they just work as advertised. Yet I would not buy anymore of their products just because of the activation processes they currently use.

The following is a template of the kind of email you will receive should any one of multiple situations occur which I will detail below.

Email starts*************************************

Dear registered user xxxxxxxxxxxxxxtsbcglobal.net,

When you activated Sothink Video Converter, we found that the hardware configuration of your computer was changed. Now you have 2 chances left for activation.

The situation happens if you did one of the operations below:

1. Change the hardware of your computer;

2. Upgrade/reinstall your Operating System;

(For the above 2 situations, you could feel free to continue using
the program.)

3. Transfer the program from one computer to another one;

4. Install the program on more than ONE computer.

(As to situation 3rd and 4th, please uninstall Sothink program from your other computer(s) to avoid your key from being deactivated automatically.)

If you have any question, please feel free to contact us at supportsothink.com.

Thanks very much for your support!

***This is an AUTO EMAIL sent from SourceTec Registration Protection System ***

Email Ends*************************************

First example, I already activated a SoThink product, then a few months down the line a new update comes out, well I install the update just fine but once I installed this update I am once again forced to pass through their activation system. Any hardware change detected no matter how minuscule, gets flagged for this annoying email shown above.

Now I don't know about you but I am always connecting and disconnecting a USB drive on my machine. So because of that anytime I use their software I need to be frisked again, I don't think so. How dare I add another USB drive on my machine without telling SoThink, okay lets send that punk another email, he's trying to game our licensing system again. So here comes another warning email. yep that is how it works on my end.

Do you feel like a criminal yet. Well I did. So they threaten you right off the get go with deactivation should you be in category 3 or 4, when all I did was update the software from my original install.

I'm not an idiot I know the rules. Use it on one machine. Yet they feel compelled to tell me anyway.

Or another situation,

If you install the software and have not used it for some time lets say 4 months but there is no update so you have not installed anything new from SoThink still you will once again be forced to send in your activation code once again. Now they have taken the liberty of already having the key placed in the appropriate key box so at least you do not need to put it in again, but damn I already activated it 4 months ago, why am I doing this again. My only crime apparently was I failed to use the software in 4 months so for that lets frisk you again to see what you might be hiding. Now how ridiculous is that to you?. I just don't get it are they that paranoid?

Another situation I went through was I lost a hard drive and subsequently I had to re install the OS on the same hardware box with the addition of a new drive. I restored my data from back-up and installed the software again. Here is another email they sent me:

Email Starts ***********************************************

The computer you tried to register with the key is found different from the one you registered before. We suggest each machine should be ONLY registered with one unique registration key. Now you still have 1 chances left for registration.

Email Ends *************************************************

Okay now I feel compelled to waste my time and explain my situation and what happened so they do not think I am gaming the system and thus lose one activation for what turns out to be a very human event. It is such a hassle.

I will categorically state though that the software does work and works well. I have never had a complaint regarding the engineering of their product.

But the bean counter that has put this activation system in play is way too paranoid. For me I would rather not go through a hardware interrogation which appears to be an amalgamation of processes developed at the NSA - CIA - SIS - and SVR. Okay a bit of hyperbole, but it’s ridiculous, its redundant, its annoying, and they do not seem to care to change it.

I for one feel that the only way to effect change is to hit them in the pocketbook by just saying enough, you have a good product but you are alienating a lot of your base. Furthermore you are driving away good business that will go to companies who are not so paranoid and who do not have such an invasive system in place.

If you do not mind being pestered by their activation process then I would encourage you to buy the software. But if these situations annoy you as they do me do yourself a favor and pass. There are plenty of other products out there.

Hope this did not come off as a rant, I just wish this company would listen up, they have good products. Quit sending me your annoying emails about activation.

My two cents, Brad Perrault

Preston Mitchell Request for HELP from SoThink!!!

I previously bought SWF Quicker. It is much easier & faster to use than Adobe Flash Pro. And Quicker is superior to its main competitor SWISH Max. Also, I use other SoThink software and have found the quality to be first-rate. To be sure, I highly recommend SoThink software to all!

Sadly, I suffer from a serious licensing issue--and request help!

I originally installed SWF Quicker and SWF Easy on my desktop and laptop with Windows 7 32-BIT. Later I did a clean install of Windows 7 64-BIT on both machines. Of course, I reinstalled Quicker & Easy on both. A month ago, I upgraded my desktop with Solid State Drives and opted for another clean install of the OS. Now Quicker & Easy won't install on the upgraded desktop.

I received an email from SoThink saying that I used up my license activations for Quicker & Easy. But it is the SAME desktop PC that I originally installed & reinstalled both software.

I am not trying to use the same license for other PCs. I understand that SoThink must take measures against software piracy. But some advanced PC users do regularly upgrade their PCs and thus require new installations of SoThink software.

Would SoThink please allow me to activate my Quicker & Easy licenses.

(If it helps, I can provide screenshots of my PC hardware configuration before and after the recent hardware upgrades. Also, I can present vendor receipts for the new hardware.)

Thank you for your attention.

James Kenney Eddie Tex: hypersnap v7 can do it now, or so they say...
quote...
Auto-scrolls and concurrently captures long web pages and other. documents, enabling it to grab more than is visible on the screen.

Extended Window Capture function when running on Windows XP® . Resizes a window to be much bigger than the screen before the capture - in one quick step, no auto-scrolling!

end quote ...

It is the second option that sounds like what I would want...

I already bought WinSnap right after my first post, so I am not complaining... It is just a feature that I think would be very helpful in a program that is already the best at what is designed for: Capturing screen contents as accurately as possible.

Adrian Williams @ sothink,
Your activation system is not infallible - just an annoyance. I bought the software yesterday but there is a cracked version v4.5 4.5.6 with 3 serial numbers freely available if you know where to look.
I too, upgrade regularly so legitimate users have more trouble than those who choose to use pirated software.

PBMCMLXXI I emailed their support this morning, one of many times I have regarding activation, and pointed to this page - full of displeasure of activation. I wrote:

'I think this post proves that I am not alone, and that you have ignored my requests and others to change the wayyour product activation works. It is totally a pain and inconvenience when trying to get licences re-activated. Your company is the only one who's software I use has these issues. You should consider as I have mentioned to support numerous times, allowing the
end user to activate/deactivate their product at anytime. This will save a vast number of calls to you, thus making logicalbusiness
sense. It won't save all of them but a lot. Adobe allow you do deactivate, Macrium allow you to deactivate,iTunes allows
you to deactivate, others plain and simple don'thave this annoying activation. I understand you protectingsoftware, but they way you do it puts off a lot of prospective customers - not good business sense, and annoys those customers who
you do have - not good business sense, as they won't recommend your products and as proven above by users of bitdujour and amsure others places, not give your company good PR.

I think now is the time for your company to take seriously it's users, and amend how you handle licences, and annoying activation. Do you really need to activate products? Lots of other companies have loyal users and not force activation on them, and they havebeen going years. If you really persist in the antiquated way yourhandle activation I feel your loose a
lot more potential customers. Seriously why not look into a better way to handle licences/activation.'

I got a reply: 'Thanks for your suggestion! We will forward your suggest to our developers for further consideration. Sorry for all the inconvenience caused on you. If you need further assistance, feel free to let us know. Have a nice day!'

Preston Mitchell The Great Irony of SoThink Activation!

It was Chinese piracy of Western software that originally caused all the paranoia about software theft. Now we have a Chinese company going to excessive extremes to protect their software...so much so that they deprive legitimate paying customers of their licenses! That is the new form of Chinese software theft in my opinion.

Bxxxx Oxxxx Many real successful companies have no activation at all,
A few examples among hundreds of super good software
are Camtasia Studio or Eltima SWF Decompiler.

The chances are good that Sothink will have more success and make more money if they take the opportunity to learn from such successful examples,

Brian H I have to say this software looks very good, and the price point looks reasonable (though I am typically used to seeing 50%+ discounts here on "Bits"). Kudos + for the "lifetime support"! Questions for vendor- "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for current subscriptions" what exactly is the "current subscription"- 1 year? Also, the BDJ Policy tab does not say anything about product activation. Could you please comment on this ... what activation does the product require? Online? Hardware footprint? As someone who upgrades his computers/components fairly often, this can make a difference to me. Thanks. -Brian

Dexter Bell In years past I used several applications from Sothink, including SWF Quicker and all of them were really, really good: they did what they said they would do and more. The interface was polished and easy to use even for someone like me who thinks, when the word 'flash' is mentioned, of running across a sports field butt naked/ But I never upgraded and stopped using them because not only did each application require activation but it was an incredibly cumbersome process for someone who upgrades and changes computers constantly - especially when some aren't connected to the Internet. And since I had two licenses it appeared I had to be careful which license info was entered on which computer or I could drain the allotted number of activations rendering one of them useless. (And the auto emails I received after each activation were quite rude-though that was probably a language problem.)

If this has changed I'd buy this in a, well...err...sorry about this...but I'd buy it in a flash.

Hope this helps and I'll be interested in hearing about the current state of the licensing policy.
