What are people saying about Start Menu 10

Nelson Carvalho Sorry my English.
1. What is the difference between the Start Menu 10 and the Start Menu X?
2. This version is only for Windows 10?
3. Is there any different version, eg Version 'Pro'?
4. If there is a 'Pro' version, what are the differences?
Thanks.

OrdinarySoft 1. Start Menu 10 is other program but based on the Start Menu X engine. The difference related to layout. Start Menu 10 has the smart-programs list
and recent documents list. But don't has the tabs. Menu popup out of the box(main menu screen).
2. Start Menu 10 works perfect under XP too or any other version.
3. We provide for you the latest PRO version but with limitations (one day for install, no support etc). On the official site you can find the freeware version of the program.
4. Here located the latest PRO version. It has all available features
that we have and can provide for you. We expect that you like it very much and you purchase it with time. The comparative table you can find on this page -

Louis H Question for the vendor.....

Do you have a comparison table to show the differences between Start Menu X and Start Menu 10? What would be the advantages of moving from Start Menu x to Start Menu 10?

Start Menu X works fine with Windows 10 for me, but if this version has been better optimized for Windows 10, I would prefer switching over to it.

Edit: I went ahead and downloaded the trial version to see for myself if the differences were enough to pay for this version. I played with it for a little under 30 minutes. Now I may have not given it the best shot, but I quickly found I preferred the Start Menu X version better. I am sure some of this is due to being comfortable with the way it is set up, and there may be a way to get Start Menu 10 to fully mimic the X version, but I found the new layout more cluttered and less helpful.

If I was still working, instead of retired, I might spring for the current special offer of $9.99 - (That is what I was offered when I hit the purchase button for the Pro version) - but without a clear understanding as to what, if any internal differences there are for this 10 version, I'm content to stay with the X version.

Thanks to the vendor and BDJ for arranging this 100% offer.

OrdinarySoft Hi Louis, Start Menu X works under Windows 10 very great! So you don't need to move on Start Menu 10. Start Menu 10 is the case for customers who like other style.

Louis H Thank you, Svetlana. I like that I can use Start Menu X AND still have a hotkey to access the built in Windows 10 Menu.

In some of the earlier beta releases, Start Menu X did not get along as well with Windows 10, but everything is working very well now.

I would HIGHLY recommend EITHER Start Menu X or Start Menu 10 for folks. Take advantage of this deal when it goes live and try it out for yourself.

Franz User @Louis H: "I would HIGHLY recommend EITHER Start Menu X or Start Menu 10 for folks:" For what? I know X since years and never took it because I don´t need/like it (the screenshots above says all). I like the own W 7 Menu much more and will stay by W 7 so long as possible. When you don´t like the W 8, 8.1 or W 10-design why you had changed to this and use it? W 10 will only bring disadvantages for me - so MS can keep it...

Petr Hi, I have Smart Menu X on two of my systems. I like the system.

#1. I'm wondering what new features or reasons might prompt me to get your Start Menu 10?

#2. Will the native Windows 10 menu co-exist with Start Menu 10? I like that Smart Menu X can co-exist with the Windows 8 menu so I can use either one.

#3. I assume your promotion is for the Pro version. Please confirm? Also, Since I don't yet have Windows 10 Pro installed, and will likely wait to see if issues arise on my Lenovo ThinkPads before I update to Win 10, can you relax your requirement to install it under a time limit (that's just not reasonable). Thanks.

OrdinarySoft @Jon Spain. You can setup the program and update your system after this.
If you help bring more visitors on this page I think BitsDuJour consider to repeat this promotion soon.
@Franz User. Start Menu more close to Windows XP menu than Window 10.
The part of our article about Windows 10 menu and why Start Menu X or Start Menu 10 is better than windows 7 menu -
We'll start by reviewing the menu in Windows 7, so we have a baseline for comparison.
The screen shot reveals two main zones. The first zone contains a list of frequently used applications. You can also configure this zone to display the entire list of applications. The second zone contains a list of folders, providing you with access various parts of your computer. The most important flaw in this interface design is the scrolling.
This is because the speed of working with the interface is determined by several parts, the most important of which are the size of the interface element, the speed of moving the cursor within the element, the speed of visually understanding the element, and the speed of visually searching it.
When scrolling you have to alternately use the scroll bar and then visually inspect the menu, repeating this step several times, and upon finding the application you have to put the cursor over the application folder, click, move the cursor to the name of the application, and then click again.
This complex procedure can be considerably sped up if the menu uses the entire screen, as it did in Windows ??. This makes it very fast to visually search the menu by cutting down the time spent scrolling.

The Deal is that you have to install BEFORE installing Win 10. If done, you would never know what Win 10 was like....
Why now make the deal Available as it is now AFTER Win 10 come out and is installed allowing you to see and experience the difference
Classic Shell is free ANYTIME.... and that is how I am going.
I used Classic Shell on Win 8.1 and it is just One Click to go from Classic Start Menu of Classic Shell to the Standard Win 8.1 screen.
Classic Shell is free before / now / and later.

Franz User @Svetlana Tsukanova: Yes, you explain it very well, how the W 7 Menu works - and for me it´s much easier to handle as your tool. I hate it when your menu opens over the whole screen (I have a lot of programs). The small zone (where you must scroll) I like more - and so much I don´t open anything over the menu - the most things I need open with a shortcut or icon. For me: Your tool only use ressources for nothing...and when I see the horror-painted screenshots : Never in my life!

Louis H @ Franz User....

(In an effort to head off any misunderstanding....My use of Capitalized words, in what follows, are not meant to come across as aggressive or as yelling. I am using capitals for emphasis only.)

I did not phrase my comment the way I meant it to be taken. To be clearer, I will revise it to say... IF you are looking for a replacement Start Menu, then I would HIGHLY recommend EITHER Start Menu X or Start Menu 10.

If something does not work for you, nor interest you, by all means make your own choice. My comment is meant as an OPINION, not a FACT. If you are happy with Windows 7 menu, than stick with it.

I have been using Windows 10 since October of last year. While it certainly has it's hiccups, it has performed vastly superior for me than any other version of Windows I have used. I started with Windows 3.1. The only version I have not worked directly with is Windows 8/8.1 (This is my personal EXPERIENCE, not something I could document with evidence as to how it compares in all situations with all machines.)

I actually built the machine I am using now, in preparation for the transition to Windows 10.

Even before Windows 8 came out, I liked the way that Start Menu X made it very easy for me to shape how my Start Menu would look and operate. It gave me a lot more control and options than I had with Windows 7.

As I mentioned, this is why I found that Start Menu X works better for me, than Start Menu 10.

If someone is LOOKING for an alternative to the Start Menu they have, then I STILL highly recommend either Start Menu X or Start Menu 10 as the alternative to go with.

If you are happy and not looking, than such an opinion is of no use to you. So please feel free to simply pass over it.

As to folks comments about the problems with the restrictions for today's freebie offer, you all make sense. Windows 10 has not been released to the general public, so there is no way for folks who have not been a part of testing it can know if they even want a replacement menu. Perhaps the Vendor could arrange for at least a two or three month period in which to activate it.

Noggin The Nog The download includes no key, and is described as already unlocked. So does the installer fail if the computer clock is past todays date, or what? How long do we have to install, or is it in fact unlimited in time? It says that "You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards", so on the face of it the software will be no use except on a windows 8 system that is already built and on which the software can be installed today. Oh well....

In the confirmation email I got this:

"The application is already unlocked which means you do not need a registration code.

You must install/register the software within 4 days, and cannot do so afterwards. Upgrades to future versions of the software will require additional payment. Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key."

So does this mean I can install it on my dual boot Win7 machine on Friday 07/31/2015 too? (the day after Win10 actually releases)

Louis H @ Cary Adams... I have been using the Windows 10 Start Menu since Oct of 2014. While it is indeed an improvement from the fiasco of Win 8, I like the additional options that Start Menu X gives me. I use both. I have Start Menu X set as what opens when I click on the Start button, and I have the Windows 10 Start Menu accessible via the Windows Key. It depends on what my workflow is as to which I use at any given time. For me it IS a "better" alternative.

@ Pi Stachio... there are TWO versions of both of these programs. I am currently using Start Menu X PRO. The freeware version of BOTH Start Menu 10 and Start Menu X can be downloaded and installed anytime. MANY folks find these versions fully adequate for their needs. I like the added features of PRO. What is being offered here, today, is the PRO version of Start Menu 10. And the vendor has adjusted the installation requirements, and it sounds as if they will work with folks who install it during this giveaway, to insure they can install it if they upgrade to Windows 10. If folks do not need or want the PRO versions of Start Menu 10, then they can download the FREE version anytime.

There are a number of videos and reviews of the Start Menu for Windows 10. So no one needs be completely unaware of what the changes will be.

I am increasingly amazed by all the complaints about this FREEBIE. Especially by folks who appear to not really be interested in getting the program to begin with.

Stuff happens.

Then again, I am sure it really is a big global conspiracy that BDJ and OrdinarySoft have dreamed up in order to destroy the peace and tranquility of those who simply cannot tolerate any mistakes in timing of a giveaway.

I fear the world such a mistake will create for my grandchildren to have to deal with.

So please, even though Svetlana has acknowledged it, lets ALL continue to point out that the timing for this give away could have been better.

Alex Kopyov @Svetlana Tsukanova it is perfectly understandable to ask for money for your product. However, the idea of BitsDuJour is to sell programs at a _discount_. Therefore, the advertized 100% discount is misrepresented as a giveaway, not a demo. To summarize--I think Startmenu 10 is a great software and it's developers deserve to be paid for their hard work. There is nothing wrong with providing a free demo, as long as it's clearly identified as such. (Just my opinion, of course).

Pi Stachio Your answers for all of these querys are good but there is altogether Too Much Confusion and Controversy on this Applet....
but worse,
as soon as you have an upgrade or new version the license is revoked and you either buy or bail out...

Given consideration to all this although I downloaded it and waiting to install upon reception of Win 10,,, I may just pass it by and delete the .exe installaton file.

Sorry to say... but is was a Huge Mistake to offer before Win 10 came out and then limit install time / and even with the 4 day extension,,, for all I know Microsoft might not get around to me for a week with Win 10.

You would have been better off making this offer three weeks from now... it would have been much more successful........and everyone would have been able to experience how good the native start menu of Win 10 is / for better or worse.....

Louis H If folks have been following the news, there is a bug with the Windows 10 Start Menu. If you have more than 512 app shortcuts, you may not see all of them. Microsoft is working on a fix, but I guess the reason why I never saw this, until I learned about it from others, is that I have been using Start Menu X along with the Windows 10 Start Menu. ALL of my shortcuts and apps - more than 700 - are there in Start Menu X, but they are NOT there in the Windows 10 Start Menu.

If you are using Windows 10 and have this problem, I'd encourage you to use, at minimum, the free version of Start Menu X or Start Menu 10.

Especially I would like to have folders, where I can put files and other folders into. Also I would like to be them (optionally) such way alphabetically-sorted, that there is no diffent behaviour between folders and links (in Win7 ALL folders come first and than ALL links - I would like them to be shown mixed or not sorted at all and that, like in XP, I can define the order by myself (by dragging them to the desired position).

OrdinarySoft Terry please click Option - Check updates. This page should be open automatically after install.

If you click Options - About you will see the BitsDuJour caption.

Also you can compare the features on the site.

If you don't see any of this then you do something wrong. Please read instructions on this site and inside the e-mail that you should receive.

Roger Rines What is Start Menu X, and is it different from Start Menu 10?

Accessing OS menus, and item placement in folders are areas where has failed to support well since Win XP.

OrdinarySoft Both programs has same engine but different layout. The start menu 10 has more Windows XP layout with recent used programs and files.

Start Menu X don't show recent programs, instead it show you the whole list of the programs immediately after you open the menu. Also it has a tabs.

Roger Rines Your description sounds like an ability to switch between the features of Start-Menu_10 & Start_Menu_X would make for a more flexible and interesting interface.

I'll go play with Start-Menu_10 to get a feel for that approach.

Thanks for responding so quickly with the information.

BearPup As a long time user of Start Menu, 3 out of my 4 computers use Start Menu X.
Having tried Start Menu 10, I much prefer the X version for my Windows 10 computers. Any chance you would open today's offering for the X version?

Regards,
BearPup

Gregg Holbert I just wanted to quickly say that I LOVE StartMenuX. I have used it happily for 2 years (Paid version). I have no experience with StartMenu10 however.

Petronius Arbiter II Okay, am I correct that it works to install this freebie-pro version on a Windows 7 computer BEFORE upgrading to Windows 10, and then in a month or so when I upgrade to Windows 10, it will still be fully functional?

And if I use it that way, will I need to tweak all my Start Menu configurations all over again after upgrading my system to Windows 10?

BearPup Hi Svetlana,
Thanks for replying. For me, its more than just a preference. Start Menu X has never been duplicated or had any rivals to it - it is totally unique. Start Menu 10 is, however, just one of a number of shell substitutes available.

Start Menu X, successor to Start Menu 7, is what made Ordinary Soft what it is today. Don't lose that uniqueness.

BearPup

Daryn Bogart @Cool User Must install and register within 4 days? Seriously???
No thank you.
No one likes strings attached.
There are free alternatives without any strings attached.

You're passing it up because its not free forever? You DO realize that it does cost money to create these applications right? To complain about needing to install and register within 4 days is not so much as having strings attached as it is to say this is a limited promotional giveaway.

IF you want free forever, go with freeware rather than sites that give PRO versions of software away on a limited basis. And if you come back with, but what if I have to uninstalla nd reinstall in 6 months? That's simple.........this same program is on here for free approximately every 4-6 months.

I just believe it would be much simpler and more appreciated if you simply said thank you rather than complained like an entitlement child that expects everything for free in life.

Erik User I totally @Cool User
Software that can´t be reinstalled isn´t a real giveaway. It´s just an annoying teaser. The software company makes it look like a giveaway while they effectively are taking it back when you have to reinstall your system. They might as well call it a trial version. It´s more like borrowing a license.

Cool User @Daryn: It's not worth it to respond to your rant.

@ Eric: Thanks.
I went with the freeware "Classic Shell". It has been there for a very long time, and it is supported by a huge following from the Open Source community.
Besides, I'm always nervous about installing Russian-made software on my computer anyway :)

Daryn Bogart @ Cool User : If you think that was a rant, then obviously, you must be a 20-something at best or like I said....an entitlement child who expects everything for free in life.

Let me guess.....you work a minimal wage job but also feel you deserve $15 per hour for that minimum wage entry level job right? Seriously.....grow up and stop expecting everyone to just give their products to you for free.

When you actually move out ot Mommy & Daddy's home and have to work for a living to support yourself, you may actually learnt he value of money rather than being a whining little child.

BitsDuJour is not meant to be a source of freeware. It's a source of deals and promotions from for-profit businesses that actually have to pay those known as "employees" to create products that are sometimes given away for free in the form of a past edition of their software for users to try their products and if they like them, they typically stay loyal to the company and would purchase the future editions.

Let me put it another way to see if it can get through your little video gamer skull......... let's say that you actually did learn to earn your own way through life (I know....completely hypothetical)....... you write code a new game or product that many people would find useful. You would expect to be paid for your work wouldn't you? But.....rather than being paid, your "boss" comes up and cries that the world expects it for free because otherwise, its a waste of their time.

What would you say to someone that said that to you? Somehow I doubt you would be too happy about it.

Use common sense for once in your life rather than just trolling and crying that your little entitlement azz can't have everything for free and then go further and claim that there's something wrong with Russian-made software. You're obviously new to the tech world and don't know much if you think there's something wrong with this product.

I've used their products since Win 8, then 8.1 and will likely check out 10. I don't even have it installed yet as I have no issue with the Win 10 menu. Expect the Windows 10 Start Menu to change in mid to late June to July once we confirm that all of the bugs are corrected in the Preview Build.

OrdinarySoft Dear Cool User,
Classic Shell is not open source any more at last one year. But it's good software so you can use it. I don't understand this software "wars". On given moment exists more than 12 programs that replace start menu. I think it's very hard to explain every user that use any "wrong"(not Classic Shell) program his mistake.
So why you waste your time? :)

The Start Menu 10,X,7,Vista(and other old names) was made in Ukraine and exists more than 10 years a long time ago before Ivo decide to write Classic Shell. Few millions people happy with this program since It's has a freeware version too. Besides freeware version of Start Menu 10 has more features than freeware version of the Classic Shell.

Last two years we spent lot of profit from Start Menu to protect lifes of Ukrainian soldiers that fought with Russians troops. So if you purchase our program before you definitely save some ones life and protect Ukraine/democracy against aggression.

Cool User @Svetlana
Thank you for the explanation. Glad to know it's a Ukrainian company!!

Hats off to the Ukrainian people.
I admire their spirit, and I have always sympathized with them since the current events started against the big bully.
I do have a number of Ukrainian friends here in the USA :)

I'm also a BIG admirer of "Nadiya Savchenko". I have followed her ordeal from day one.
I love her spirit, and I'm very happy that she is now home safe. Give her a big hug for me if you ever meet her :)

Best wishes to you, your people, and your software development company.

Petronius Arbiter II Ahem...

Is anybody ever going to answer my question, above? While y'all have been going back and forth over the non-software-related question of whether Cool User is really all that cool a user, I've been patiently waiting for an answer that I do need to have before I will know whether this software is worth my time to try out...

BearPup @ Petronius: My experience was this: having installed Start Menu X on my Win 7 computers, when I then upgraded my computers to Win10, Start Menu X followed without missing a beat.

To be fair, mine was a paid-for version, but all I know is that it worked for me.

BearPup

I currently own Start Menu X on my Windows 7 machine but would like to upgrade to the 10 version that I have on my Laptop computer.
Is today's offering only for the free version of SM 10? If not how can I purchase it and what is the cost?

Thanks.

Ed Ward I just purchased and am trying to set up Folders, Virtual Groups, etc. After numerous attempts, none of which have worked, getting very frustrated. Also, there is no documentation illustrating basic functionality. Program looks powerful but if user can't get basic features to work w/in 10-15 mins. it's not useful. Very, very frustrated at this point.
