Brian De Bragança In reply to Stefan Hauber, under the 'THE FINE PRINT' tab, above, it is stated:

"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for minor versions only."

Since the version being downloaded is v4.7, you can assume that you will be asked to pay an upgrade fee for v5 and beyond, I guess.

Danny I get the impression that this application not even upgrade (s) has, is that so? In any case, I can find nothing there! And what is the cost of an upgrade license?
Apr 11 2013 at 12:04pm Copy Link
Mark Hill Do not like that Start Menu X is licensed per computer, and not per user. Do not like that each boot version requires another license. Do not like that version upgrade costs are not given. Do not like that no indication given of expected release of version 5.
I do like the feature set especially its flexibility. I do hope that the developer reconsiders licensing policy and is more open on release plans and cost. In the meantime I will stick with the freeware version...
Apr 11 2013 at 2:47pm Copy Link
H. H. Hallo,
First I´ve picked up start menux at giveawayoftheday and after testing it I bought additional licenses, since it does a good job and I would not like to miss it.
Nevertheless before recommending ihte software I´ve to ask the following questions:

1. is it possible to import the links from the quick-start-panel too. Every other item was imported correctly , but I didn´t manage to get the quick-start items too to be imported in startmenux.

2. Do you gurantee, that start menux can be activated even in case (dont hope this) that your company would give up its business? Online activation, especially harewarefootprinted procedure can be the dealbreaker. I already made the bad experience, that it is impossible to activate software I had spent quite a lot of money for, since the developers gave up their business / vanished and with this shut down their license server. so even completely ununsed licenses are lost. - only very few companies (e.g. developer of '"flow" handled this case correctly, and made the software available as freeware, after closing the license server.
3. does resizing / moving of partition or changing the number of partitions on a harddisk already require a reactivation?

thank you for clarifying this in advance
Apr 11 2013 at 2:51pm Copy Link
Fletch @Mark Hill: I concur. Though multiple licenses are ever so slightly cheaper with this deal. Just have to categorize these kind of deals "As is". You'll get at least what you see for the price shown. Note, I did read something about a portable version.

@Stefan Hauber: Most likely a new product than a major version. See

@Svetlana Tsukanova: What's the difference between the "7" version and this "X" version? Does the "X" version replace the "7" version?
Apr 11 2013 at 6:14pm Copy Link
Petr I just purchased this and installed it on my Win 7 Pro machine. Nice program. Lots of flexibility to categorize.

I'm not sure if the program does the following:

#1. Can I "pin" programs to the start-menu? I'd like to have my most-used programs quickly available.

#2. I'm considering purchasing another license for my Windows 8 machine. I've used Stardock's program which can boot Win 8 directly to the Desktop. Does your program enable a Win 8 machine to boot directly to the Desktop so I can access the regular menu features with your Start button?

#3. I have both Microsoft Office 2010 and the new Office 2013 installed. The co-exist. But, with your menu it only shows me the Office 2012 programs (e.g. Word, Excel...) in the menu. How can this be fixed? (note: I can type "Word" in the search resulting in both Word 2013 and Word 2010 being displayed, so I can launch Word 2013 that method. Still, the Office 2013 programs should display on the menu.

I'm happy with the program. I also like that I can terminate your program from the Hidden Icon Folder in the taskbar, then the Microsoft original menu becomes functional.
Apr 11 2013 at 8:41pm Copy Link
OrdinarySoft @H. H. & @Petr you can drag&drop items into the main menu or add items with + button at the top.

@H. H. I can't guaranty this since not everything depend from me. Sorry.

@H. H. The activation use the 3rd party tools so I don't know. But from my side I can help solve this situation(usual in 24h)

@Ron. The Start Menu 7 is the old name of Start Menu X. I hope I will never change the name again. Also please note that everyone of customers who bought program in 2011 has received update to Start Menu X for free. I'm just don't know when the 5 comes and can't promise.

@Petr. Yes you can skip the metro. You can get access to system menu if you hold the Shift button and click start button or press win key. About word... please write me to support with screenshot of your menu with word menu popup.

Thank you very much for the questions Since giveaway is almost finished please send me all request in support .

H. H. Hallo @ customers,
I first discovered startmenu x pro when it was offered as a giveawayoftheday.
It soon became a "must have" utility, since it makes working with windows more comfortable and saves time since one has a faster acces to many functions, files and folders, so I bought additional licenses inbetween..
The only thing I dislike is the hardwarefootprinted online activation, but at least the author allows unlimited installations per footprint, so one does not run into troubles when just reformatting the harddisk and having to reinstall windows system.
Because of the psefulness and the real fair price at bdj,
I´d highly recommend buying the pro version, which has additional features, one can benefit from everytime when using windows, I won´t miss this software anymore.

S.C. looks like the current version is 4.99? so you will be paying for an major updated version 5.xx probably shortly if you buy this now.

Javier Gil So, just to clarify: does the purchase of this entitle us to 1 year of free upgrades?
Oct 21 2013 at 10:04pm Copy Link
Danny @Javier Gil,

With a new version you can buy for an upgrade price. Small side effects are always included.
Oct 21 2013 at 10:11pm Copy Link
Javier Gil I'm not sure I understand the sentence "With a new version you can buy for an upgrade price". Actually, I don't. :)
Thanks for answering though.
Oct 21 2013 at 10:14pm Copy Link
Danny @Javier Gil,

So much is not, for all the convenience you get!
Oct 21 2013 at 10:19pm Copy Link
S.C. from THE FINE PRINT link above

"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version and minor versions thereafter. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted."

forgive me if i am a little slow but.. will the next major version upgrade e.g. v 4.99 to v 5.xx be free or will there be a charge?
Oct 21 2013 at 10:28pm Copy Link
Javier Gil Oh, ok, thanks for clarifying that. :)
Are you Dennis Nazarenko (the programmer?).
The program is really nice, very useful. I just installed in on my Windows 7 computer and it works well.
The 12 months upgrade policy (or only pay for a major upgrade) is very common amongst software vendors here. It would be very fair also: if the deal price + the upgrade price is more than the price of the new version with a discount (the site currently offers a 20% discount) then you can understand that we have to think about it. A lot of the time it's more a question of not having to worry about the fees for 12 months. Many of us here buy lots of programs, and having "peace of mind" for at least year is definitely a bonus.
I do agree that the program is definitely worth it.
Oct 21 2013 at 10:33pm Copy Link
MojoMan There's always the option to use the free version which has almost all of the major features... if the upgrade is going to be at additional cost.

Oct 22 2013 at 2:44pm Copy Link
Zonwas Hi,

Great help, this software.

But, this does also happens when buying some other software, why do the people in the EU have to pay 6€ and people in the possibility of paying in $ (we are not allowed a payment in $ from our country of residence) only 4,35 € (=6$), as offered? Why not count then with the correct rate of exchange?

But also: thank you very much for your program and offer!

Kind regards,

Yves Ros Hello Danny,

I just purchased StartMenu X Pro in duplicate (1 for my Desktop + 1 for my Laptop) and I was provided with 1 license key.

Would you be so kind to confirm me that this one and only license key will work with the different footprints of my Desktop and Laptop?

At present, I installed it on my Laptop only and I will install it on my Desktop within a week or two.

Thanks in advance for your kind answer.
Oct 23 2013 at 1:05am Copy Link
Zonwas Thanks for your tip, Yves! I just bought the software minutes before your message :-(. Your two cents ;-)
Oct 23 2013 at 1:53am Copy Link
OrdinarySoft I am sorry for the delay with the answer. With purchase you get 4.99 version and all minor 5.x updates for free next update with discount.
One key for many PC(it's useful since you don't need remember each key for each PC).
Price in EURO is different it's true. I have reason for this but if you can you can select USD and pay with USD.
I'm sorry for the your inconvenience.

Wiggle Hi, what is the difference between Start Menu X with True Launch Bar? Is there any option to buy the Pro version on Bitsdujour too?
Oct 23 2013 at 10:02am Copy Link
Yves Ros @ Zonwas ;-)

@ Maz I have True Launch Bar for years. It is a very good piece of software which comes along with a bunch of useful plugins and honest features for customization.

Yet, it offers in no way, the possibilities which Strart Menu X Pro provides you with, regarding the organization and cutomization of your start menu and programs as well as a very simple and easy way to apply "on the fly" changes.

If you are a user that needs to manage lots of different types of applications, who regularly acquires some new or complementary ones, I would recommend you without any hesitation to take advantage of the Strart Menu X Pro discount.

Lito The pro version is what is being sold here I bought it earlier. There are only 2 versions of this Start Menu X. The freeware one and the Pro version.

James Irons I would like to use Start Menu X on a machine which is used only by me but which dul boots into windows 7 and windows 8.1. The two versions of windows boot from different boot partitions and use common application partitions and hardware. Can I do this with a single license?
Oct 23 2013 at 2:37pm Copy Link
DroidLuvr @James Irons: Kind of off the software subject here, but since I am considering this software, I would have the same question, except:
How do you manage a dual boot to use common applications partitions between Win7 and Win 8.1?? -- I just put Win 8 on an SSD and would love to know how to use my old HDD OS with it :-)

You can email me if you wish...

Oct 23 2013 at 4:21pm Copy Link
James Irons Don't read too much into it. Apps are not common to both versions of windows, just drives, partitions and data. Apps reside in separate directories. I am currently using StartX on the Windows 8.1 side and would like to use Start Menu X on both sides to replace it. I am just mounting all drives and partitions (except boot drives) under both versions of windows and using a boot manager to pick the OS.

Bruno Verschraegen @Jordan

A few hours before you posted your question the first time, Svetlana Tsukanova from OrdinarySoft replied to someone else having asked the same question: "With purchase you get 4.99 version and all minor 5.x updates for free next update with discount." I am not from OrdinarySoft, just trying to help, but to me that sounds like we'll be entitled to get version 5 and all minor updates of version 5 for free.

Jordan Whiteley @Bruno

Thanks for responding Bruno :) but my question is whether the PRO version purchased through their website can update to major new releases (5.x, 6.x, 7.x etc) for free. I understand with the 4.99 PRO version here you must pay to upgrade to major new releases. Can someone from OrdinarySoft can answer my question please? Time is running out for me to choose :(

Mark W If I understand this correctly this is licensed per PC so if you want to install it on your desktop and laptop you need 2 licenses?
Oct 24 2013 at 10:25am Copy Link
Louis H Better deal than I understood.

I purchased Three (3) licenses for two laptops and a desktop. I ended up getting an additional discount for multiple licenses. Total for 3 licenses was $16.20 (USD). I expected to pay $18 (USD.) So a much better deal.

I tried out the free version for less than 5 minutes and knew I wanted this one. And with today's BDJ discount, and an extra discount for multiple licenses, 3 for less than the price of one at regular price. Very nice.

Bruno Verschraegen Like Louis H I bought 3 licenses for our small team and was pleasantly surprised with an additional volume discount. Very nice indeed. And OrdinarySoft promptly reacted very positively on ma follow-up request to change the single license number into three separate license numbers. Excellent service especially given the low price. Well done, people at OrdinarySoft.

Lee H I frequently update my computer systems, which I usually construct myself. I am planning on updating my motherboard in the near future. If this software is activated through the computer's "footprint", if I change components, I assume this program will no longer work. If that is the case, will the developer offer a way to reactivate the software or am I out of luck?
Oct 24 2013 at 3:24pm Copy Link
Robert W Lee H wrote: "the computer's "footprint", if I change components, I assume this program will no longer work."

I read that the recommended approach is to Uninstall this Software first. It is far too easy to forget to uninstall software, and sometimes one just cannot because the computer no longer works. New computers take the place of older or dead computers. It is far to easy for there to be a failure. If you run into a problem I suggest writing the developer. Often the software developers are more than understanding of this situation, and do not strictly enforce the one computer footprint limitation.

I hope that the software developer will respond to your question with great insight, and understanding.
Oct 24 2013 at 6:20pm Copy Link
Lee H Thanks for your post Robert.

Even though the software is inexpensive (and I considered buying multiple copies for several computers I own) I find that activation that relies upon the hardware footprint is too much of a hassle. And because I change things all the time I am going to take a pass on this software.

Quite frankly, I can understand why a developer would want to protect an expensive piece of software with activation that includes a hardware footprint. For inexpensive software like this, I really don't see the necessity. I'd happily buy multiple copies if the program used a simple activation key. If I couldn't get an answer to my original post from the developer 4 hours after I posted it, I shudder to think how long it might take to get the software reactivated if I make a change to my computer. I like what I see in the program but I will NOT buy it due to the activation scheme!

Daniel Gaudet I am having a problem with purchasing the software.

This is the error that I am getting:
PayPal: The totals of the cart item amounts do not match order amounts.

I am ordering 6 licenses and the High priority support and Key reminder service for a total of 40.94 CAD (or $38.38 US). It doesn't make a difference if I choose Canada or US.

If I remove the two extra items, the High priority support and Key reminder service, it works fine.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I bought a copy. I had been using the free version of Start Menu X for sometime. I may never get around to using the Pro features. The Bitsdujour price seemed reasonable to send the developer some money for such nice software, that I actually use.

_*_ I have two questions.

1. I purchased this program before at Bits (version 4), and reinstalled it but cannot figure out where to put in my registration key. Can you please walk me through how to register the program?

2. Since the Fine Print states the upgrade policy includes the next major version and all minor updates; I purchased version 4 and now it is at version 5.

If I repurchase version 5 here do I then receive version 6 free in the future?

Thank you

Stephane M Hi,

Based on what the "Fine Print" tab states regarding upgrades (i.e. Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version and minor versions thereafter), I would rather say free upgrades from current version 5.1 up to 6.99

Please, could you clarify?
Feb 26 2014 at 2:47pm Copy Link
Robert Crombie Hi,
My PCs are all old (2004) and they die often.
(Because they are of similar age, etc, I can readily salvage bits, and get another one working).
Can I install the program in a different PC, when one dies ?

Feb 27 2014 at 2:06am Copy Link
Stephen Kreyling I also would like clarification on the free upgrade to the version 6 series. The fine print seems to say that 6 will be a free upgrade.

Feb 27 2014 at 5:28am Copy Link
DougvT Folks--Start Menu X is an excellent program. It saved my sanity when I first upgraded to Windows 8.1. Even the free version is quite fully featured. Google it and get more info, then decide whether to buy Pro version. I paid $20 for Pro version mainly as a Thank You to its developer. If you have Win 8 or 8.1, get free version at least--you'll like it.
Feb 27 2014 at 5:36am Copy Link
OrdinarySoft With this purchase you don't get free update on 6.x version. you get only 5.99
On given moment the latest version is 5.1. The fine print seems old.

Robert you can setup the program for other PC when your PC stop working.

Joe: You can't try the PRO. You can purchase the program and ask for refund in next 30 days.
OrdinarySoft - Feb 27 2014 at 5:45am Copy Link
Stephen Kreyling It would be a good business decision to always check the offers, especially the fine print before an offer goes live. Otherwise it seems deceptive to users that that purchase reading fine print that is not correct.

OrdinarySoft - Feb 27 2014 at 8:06am Copy Link
Flo Svetlana, so your company charges 50% of the purchase price to re-send the email with the key in case it is lost? Pricing decisions are surely at your discretion, however, I feel this is unreasonable and a service that most other software vendors provide for free (it is called customer service). Anyway, good luck with the promotion, but I will look elsewhere.
Feb 27 2014 at 9:40am Copy Link
OrdinarySoft Flo my company takes 15% from the price for _optional_ service. The price of the program is 20$. today you can get it for 6$ from this 6 we get only 2.35$. The program has unique functionality and you can't find any other solution like this.
You are ready to provide the key remainder service to the people four times per year to end of your life for 2$ ? :))) I'm sure you don't. So the 2.99$ good additional tips for the support team.

HungryForDeals This software uses a "hardware footprint" for installations. In other words, upgrade to another pc, can't install or a pain if they give permission. Want to install on your desktop and laptop, can't do both. This is ridiculous. Piracy is selling key codes to a lot of people, or installing on many pc's, not two in your home. This software trend of only one pc is ridiculous. Install "classic shell" It's better anyway.

Chuck Although I have some reservations about this niche program, it was interesting enough to me to purchase. As background, I own Winstep Xtreme (includes NextStart and WorkShelf), Start8 and True Launch Bar licenses. I primarily use Winstep Xtreme on my Win7 machine and Start8 on a Win8 machine. True Launch Bar works well and is flexible enough, but didn't really grab me with its bells and whistles, so I don't use it.

Which brings me to Start Menu X. I saw it as a replacement to the NextStart module of Winstep Xtreme. While it doesn't have some of the more robust features NextStart boasts, its simple yet effective interface appealed to me. Having used it for a few hours trying to get it setup as I want to use it, it has strengths and weaknesses.

1. Clean, straightforward appearance.
2. Menu is very responsive when moving from one folder to another.
3. Virtual groups and tab operations are very helpful in compartmentalizing program and file shortcuts in an organized fashion.
4. Ability to customize main menu and appearance, at least to a certain extent, is helpful.
5. Power options, including timers, are exceptional.
6. Main in folder speeds things up.
7. Start Menu can be moved around the screen
8. Ability to bypass Start Menu X to use the normal Windows start menu

1. Setting up virtual groups based on existing real folder groups is supposed to be an easy drag and drop operation ( I haven't been able to get it to work. Given the vast array of programs and folders I use, this is a must personally.
2. No native ability to convert a virtual group to a tab. A drag and drop option to create a tab from a folder by dragging the folder to the tab area would be great.
3. Skins are limited to those included with program. An ability to use other skins would help.
4. Although Start Menu can be moved around the screen, it fails to remember its location if the program is exited and later re-opened. This would be helpful.

Once I solve the drag and drop issue with virtual groups, I'll consider this a good purchase. Until then, I'm on the fence as to how useful this is for me relative to what I already use.

Loco78 * I have 2 licenses purchased this program during the previous promotion and I use it quite a long time already and I have no objection to the action as well as to update that are quite common. I reserve do not have any relationship with the manufacturer simply write your own review.

Chuck My earlier critique referenced this key point:

Setting up virtual groups based on existing real folder groups is supposed to be an easy drag and drop operation ( I haven't been able to get it to work. Given the vast array of programs and folders I use, this is a must personally.

I submitted a help request through the vendor's website and received a response within 18 hours. Per Denys (the programmer), this function has been temporarily disabled.

That's unfortunate. I hope to see it re-enabled soon.

Steven Avery Since I already place all my start items into groups in the Start Menu ( Office, Utilities, WebDev, etc) what might be some other advantages, e.g. on Windows 7.

Note: I do prefer the type of one-column start menu that is difficult to emulate on 7.
Mar 1 2014 at 10:09pm Copy Link
VLM I have used Classic Shell for years and love it. It allows me to reestablish an XP-style start menu, which makes me very happy! Has all sorts of features, and it's freeware.

I just looked at Start8, but it only talks about a Win 7 start menu. I prefer the XP look and design. Maybe the description is just a bit weak. ??

I have purchased Winstep Xtreme and True Launch Bar, both here at BDJ. These are both very nice programs. but I prefer the simple, straightforward XP start menu over all that jazz. And there has never been a single moment in space-time when I have wished to go to the Win 7 start menu or any other kind of start menu.

I realize that others may have different preferences, I'm only expressing my own. Perhaps I'm just a stick in the mud. :) Or perhaps, being a tad older than most (I suspect), I've just learned to value my time and energy differently. :):)

Frank J Perrotta Thank you for the response Svetlana Tsukanova.

I am just saying it would be helpful to say inside the notes that an internet connection is necessary for registration. It is NOT just this app but many here on BitsDuJour that I find I cannot register due to this issue.

Some apps seem to be OK without an internet connection for registration so I am not sure ???

I am sure that some would be interested in the High-End Start Menu for Mac OS. I am not sure if there is something available already in the OS X marketplace or not... I think it would be a replacement for Finder. I do know that there are a lot of apps that try to make a better Finder. I would go to the Apple Store and give it a search.

Richard Blake Lana, For a more liberal distribution strategy that still protects you from hackers I suggest: require only that "purchase" and registration (via automatic email reply) occur during the offer. Purchaser must download the version that was current during the offer; that version will remain available at your site for at least one week following the offer, to accomodate those unable to download immediately. Your site sends to purchaser via email a registration key, generated automatically, that is specific to purchaser (branded with their name and email address) and to the version/build of the software. User can install at any time and register with the provided key (no Internet access required at that time). About box shows purchaser's name, email address and registration key. To encourage users of free copies to provide free advertising to you, state in the EULA that discounted upgrades are not available to those who obtained the software for free, however if two later purchases reference your email address (you being the $0 purchaser), then your future upgrades will be available at the regular discount price, and if five later purchases reference your email address then in addition, your next upgrade is free.

Bob Horton Hmm, for whatever reason many vendors do not require registration during the "deal" period and seem to have avoided the loss of profitability due to hackers. To me, one of the advantages to Bits du Jour is that you don't have to install that very day. There is no way that I can always get the SW installed that very day. I can tell you emphatically that the one free install on one of my personal systems has many times led to rather large corporate purchases from my company later on. I would think this would be desirable from a developer's perspective. As an example, I have used prior versions of Start Menu X, but not on a Win8 system. Should things go well with this install and evaluation, I'd consider installing it on all our company units as we roll over to Win8. But I've spent more time on this post than I'll probably have today to get this put on a Win8 box.

Now exiting soapbox :).

Since I tried it twice and still got the same error, I read the email, and the email says, "Use this registration information to unlock the software AFTER INSTALLATION." (emphasis added). So I tried intalling again, this time choosing the Pro trial button. And now I cannot find anywhere to enter the registration key. PLEASE HELP! I followed the instructions!

Rick Truell Since there was several mentions of wanting a similar program on the Mac, I thought I'd suggest taking a look at Alfred ( ). It's a freeware program that is actually much simpler than Start Menu X. You type a keyboard shortcut (on my Mac it's option-space, which I believe is the default, but I might have changed it), then start typing the name of the file/program you want. Alfred presents a list of all the files and programs on your computer that match what you've typed, each with a keyboard shortcut - the "most used" gets 'enter', the others get 'command-' and a number - and as you use something from that list, it becomes "most used", so that after 2 or 3 times, all you have to do to use that file/program is: option-space, type a few letters of the file/program name and hit enter.

I've probably made it sound more complex than it can go from "oh, I need to run " to having running, in less time than you can move the mouse to the Start button on Windows! And that's the *least* of the things that Alfred can do! If you have a Mac, check it out.

K James For anyone else having trouble with the registration code not taking because of a supposed internet or firewall problem, mine was resolved by doing the following:

1. I installed as a 30-day trial of the Pro plan.

2. After it started, I right-clicked on the icon in the SysTray and selected "Add features to StartMenuX" and THAT provides a small pop-up window with a box in which to enter the registration code. For me, it STILL gave me the error message related to the internet or firewall.

3. However, without doing ANYTHING else, I simply restarted Windows, and retried my step #2 again, and the program registered instantly with no error message at all.

Thank you, Svetlana, for all your responses to people having trouble. Please tell your design team that they should make your program consistent with others and provide a "register" option when looking at the program's "Help" or "About" menu item. It is NOT obvious (at all) that "Add features..." is where one can provide their registration code. Also, there is clearly some sort of glitch with the verification process when installing the program, as I was not the only one who had this alleged internet/firewall problem. One should not have to reboot their system in order to verify their registration code. Thank you.

You have to be kidding me! How cheap do you expect quality software to be? This costs a mere $6! That's about the price of a beer here in the UK. A beer lasts maybe 30 or 40 minutes - I've used the free version of this program, with great success, for many months.

It really is one of the better programs out there and even though I'm not sure I really need the additional "pro" features, at $6 this is a steal and I am buying it to show support for the developer and to say "thanks" for providing a free version that
a) wasn't nagware,
b) didn't try to spy on me,
c) didn't bombard me with ads,
d) didn't want me email address and those of my friends
e) didn't need to know how old I am,
f) didn't ask for my income details,
g) etc, etc.

$6? Well worth it!

In the opinion of either the author or anyone who is using this product, what distinguishes this product from some of the free alternatives (e.g., Classic Shell)?

OrdinarySoft Jorma Nahkola: today you can purchase the same PRO version as official one but with discount.

VLM: Program use PC activation but very gently so you should not have a problems if you use program according to license.

Start Menu X compare to Classic Shell has -
- Single click lunch feature.
- Virtual Groups
- Power timers
- you can use all screen instead small portion (not need to scroll and make additional clicks)
and just much handy to use since don't mimic Microsoft attempts to create interface that fit all needs.

Louis H I started using this program in October of 2013 and it remains one of the few programs I have purchased from BDJ that I still use every day. It is a wonderful alternative for the old Start Menu. It is the PRO version that you are getting here today. (I purchased three licenses back then. I am using it on Win 7 64 bit computers that are either Home Premium or Professional. I have had no problems on my systems.)

I recommend folks take time to read through the older comments as many questions as answered as to how this program installs, what version you are getting, and how you can uninstall and reinstall in a different computer - should you need to do so in the future.

When I first purchased this, it was at version 4.99 and all of us were given a free upgrade to Version 5 since Version 5 was so close to being released - with free updates through version 5.99. The program is currently at Version 5.30. As noted in previous comments - if you buy now you will be covered through version 5.99.

I simply do not want to go back to working without this program installed. It truly has made my daily computer work so much easier.

VLM First of all, I wish to say that the video, above, is excellent and conveys a clear sense of what this product can do. Thank you! The product looks excellent to me.

From watching the video, I have these questions:

1. I notice that items are assigned to preexisting categories ... My Videos, Games, etc. My category requirements would be quite different. Can I set aside the built-in categories and use my own?

2. In the video, everything is done with the mouse. This is probably necessary ... because it's video. :) But this does lead me to ask what, if any provision is made for using shortcuts in lieu of the mouse.

3. Related to #2, can Start Menu X be set up to respond to the classic ctrl-esc shortcut, replacing the Windows start menu (pre-Win 8) entirely?

4. From the purchase process itself, what are "High Priority Support" and "Key Reminder Service"?

5. Just to be absolutely clear, we ARE purchasing the pro version here, yes?

One more thing, directed at some of my fellow BDJ enthusiasts. We all know that mistakes are made from time to time in the Fine Print. Rather than attacking vendors rather viciously--and usually learning that it IS a mistake, not a "stupid policy"--perhaps it would be both more civilized and more constructive to state responses to questionable Fine Print content in the form of questions. For example, "In the Fine Print, did you mean to say ...?" Just my 2 cents worth, of course.

Thank you.

Louis H VLM...

As a user of this wonderful program for over a year now, I can tell you that..

1) You can create as many categories as you wish. You have the ability to set your own names for these groups.

2)Under Settings you do have the ability to set up Hotkeys for some functions. I am not aware of the ability to use hotkeys beyond these, however.

3) ctrl-esc brings up Start Menu X for me. shift-win brings up the standard Start Menu.

4) I do know the "Key Reminder Service" is if you lose your key and need it replaced in the future. Not sure myself what the High Priority Support covers.

5) The Vendor has answered this one in an earlier comment today. This IS indeed the PRO version. There are only two versions. Free and PRO.

I support your final comments. I, myself, have gotten testy with how there are times when BDJ does not get the Ad Copy updated and clear before running a deal. I have learned to seek to step back and recognize that mistakes being made does not warrant my venting my personal frustration towards either the Vendor nor the staff at BDJ. My personal experience has been that BDJ has always made good on any problems that arise on their end, and the majority of the vendors here are small independent business folks who truly are seeking to offer a quality product. Some are still learning how to shape their customer support, but I know that I do much better when folks point out my own inconsistencies or mistakes with a gentle approach. That said, however, if I continue to ignore the gentle approach, I have little grounds upon which to complain when folks take it up a notch or two. :-)

Still.... it is VERY rare, if even that, that one is justified, here on BDJ, with using a more vicious or derogatory tone when registering a compliant or criticism.
Dec 8 2014 at 10:21am Copy Link
VLM Louis H - Thank you for your kind and thorough response. I shall purchase the product!

When I try to see those mistakes through the eyes of the vendors, some quite small, many for whom English is not a first language, I realize how easy it must be to overlook what, to some, seems obvious. I have worked as an editor. As such, I am aware of the range of errors people make, not because of any malintent, but simply because they just didn't notice something or think something through as fully as they might. I doubt whether any of these Fine Print write-ups benefits from a pass before the eyes of an editor. :)

Stephen B Oddly enough Start Menu X (this deal) is freeware while there is a Start Menu X Pro. This Bits page only talks about Start Menu X for Win 7 and 8.1 while the SMX web site notes that it is for WinXP up to Win10 (32 and 64 bit). So, is this Bits deal for an old freeware version or something else? I'm confused...
Aug 11 2015 at 4:41am Copy Link
BearPup @Stephen B: As a long time user of Start Menu I have an explanation for you.
Yes, there is a freeware version, but it lacks the key feature of being able to designate a main folder / application when you click on the starting icon.

In other words, when I click on my office application, I can designate one of the many options to start with. In the specific case, I designate my text application as the default program that comes up, as opposed to the spreadsheet or presentation apps. Saves a lot of clicking to get the main application that I use daily.

The current version of Start Menu X works well in XP through to Windows 10. There is a new application available for Windows 10, but I prefer to use the 'X' version, as opposed to Start Menu 10. Why? Because I'm not a friend of tiles, and I prefer to see all my applications on the main interface, I prefer the 'X' version over '10' version.

Hope this is helpful to you.

BearPup @Chuck User: yes, the current version being offered here is the latest version, with updated Builds offered on a regular basis. I personally have used the app on computers ranging from a now-defunct XP system (the first time I ever tried this application) through to Windows 7, and now onto Win 10.

And yes, I have bought several licenses for this application - the only program I have purchased that frequently. Indeed, the only program that I've consistently bought as no freeware application comes close to the same level of functionality.

Having the ability to see all of my programs on a single screen, plus the full Control Panel on a single screen, is why I rate this software a 5-star application. And for those who like tiles, there is now Start Menu 10 as well. But given my preference for seeing all my program at once on a single screen, I choose to stay with the Start Menu X model.

Hope this helps you out.

BearPup @ Peter R:The way I have Start Menu configured one click on the Start Button gets me a full screen shot of every application that is stored on my computer - over a hundred so far. Alternately, I could have easily opened Control Panel with just a hand movement of the mouse if Control Panel was the needed application.

The program also lets me customize how it works. Some examples. For someone who is visually impaired as I am, they can adjust the font sizing, have several options for skins, and a choice of what control buttons appear on the interface.

Lastly, I have one button access to what function pressing the button triggers. As I stated earlier, my office application, which opens a default application when I click on the title, or more likely, puts out another menu of icons from which you must choose. That's an awful lot of clicking when the application I really need is the same one almost universally.

By designating that one application from the group is the one I want to open 99% of the time, I have one click access to that application. So when I go to select the one program from that office suite, I need only click on the title to trigger that one application to load. So with Start Menu, by designating that one application within a group, I automatically go to that application with one-click of the mouse. Very convenient.

All of this in one application, nothing I've used or tried since, comes even close to what you can do with Start Menu's one interface.

Hope that gives you what you want.

Lito @ Peter R : I use both this and True Launch Bar at the same time. I think for a start menu replacement, this one is far superior and it works and acts similarly to the windows start menu with extra useful features, but if you want to make an actual launch bar then True Launch Bar is better and much more customizable. They both sort of do similar things but in a different way. I don't think True Launch Bar works for me as a replacement start menu. TLB doesn't even have an option to replace the original start menu IIRC. It sort of depends on how you work. I use the start menu for applications that I don't use all that often. While TLB I have set up for items that I use daily so I can access them quickly.

Chuck Brotman Start Menu X vs true Launch bar:

I've had both pro versions for years. and use both. There is some overlap in function, but they address somewhat different areas. Both can be used to launch files and folders. For me, SMX addresses the start menu. True launch Bar I use more to effectively move the desktop to the task bar I use the SM for general purpose starting of ANY program. TLB is used for collecting & catagorizing program links. It also has a decent "recently used" function. Either can replace the Windows Start menu, but in a different fashons.

If you are into customizing your skinning TLB has excellent resources as well as having many additional "widgets" available.

Both are well done and I've had good experience with their support. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Not tried on Win10 yet!. but on win7 and previously on XP they both worked great!

BearPup Every time this Deal comes up I sing the praises of this utility, and I'm here to do it again. I've been a user of Start Menu X since before it was known as Start Menu 7, quite a few years ago.

My principal reason: I see every program installed on my computer on a single screen. Or I can navigate through Applications (Apps) and Control Panel to view everything installed in those categories (tabs) as well.

This is also the reason that I use Start Menu X over Start Menu 10: The X version allows for the screen view I mentioned above. There is no step to open that view, while the 10 version is a true so-called Modern GUI.

This makes for a perfect Start Menu, far better and much more customizable than the Windows Start Menu / Screen, including 'details' such as font size and aereo effects. And @ $6 its a great deal (and no, I don't get a commission!).

Gde Swart I'll second Bear Pup on this one. Its Great! Learning curve is near zero, but you might spend some time organizing/configuring thing. Once you're done, you'll wonder how you got along before. If you have Win 8 - Win 10 you really can't go wrong here, especially at this price.

Bertie Brummel The vendor's website shows a price of $ 9,99 (10 anniversary discount) for a single license.

Does Start Menu X work properly with IVO Soft's "Classic Shell" installed under Win 8.1 64x? Is it possible to switch from Classic shell to Start Menu X and back
without inconvenient re-configuration?

OrdinarySoft Hi Bertie Brummel,

No you can't use this programs together since both change the system menu. But I think after you try Start Menu X you don't find any reason to use Classic Shell.

Even freeware version of the program has more features than Classic Shell -
Virtual Groups, Power timers etc. With the pro version you will get Single click lunch feature.

You may try 30 day trial of Start Menu X to make sure in this.

Feb 27 2016 at 6:51am Copy Link
John User I love this program and have used it for some time. However, I did run into one problem recently I thought I would mention here - I probably should have gone to their fine customer support with it, but maybe others might be interested too.

I spent a lot of time setting up all my programs into groups and got everything just to the point where it was perfect. I was able to easily add new downloaded programs to my groups. Everything was working great.

However, my computer started having problems and I had to do a refresh reinstall of Windows 10 and lost my groups, etc for Start Menu X. Honestly, since that happened I have not taken the time to go back and create all the groups again and reorganize my programs. I'm just using the Win 10 menu.

My question is: is there a way to save all your groups, etc. so that when you have a mishap, you can restore your save again?

Thanks, and maybe I will spend some time today setting this program up again.

Petr Q1: Pre-sale question. Would I be better off purchasing SmartMenuX now, instead of paying for an upgrade to 6.x. I'm asking because I see if I purchase now I will get free upgrades to version 6.99.

Q1: I have StartMenuX on several Windows PCs. One of them I updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. Occasionally StartMenuX now crashes on Windows 10. Any suggestions?

Q2: I have another Windows 8.1 laptop with version 5.72. I will be updating this PC to Windows 10 next week. Should I wait and install the latest version 5.81 StartMenuX Pro after I upgrade to Windows 10? Or should I update to 5.81 now?

Usually we provide discount for update so you can wait for new version.

Q1. Please make sure that you use latest version of the program. Please contact with support too - supportbox at

Q2. I recommend uninstall the program before update on windows 10 and install new version after update.

Instead of having just a single start-menu, I would like to the user be able to create additional ones on the desktop. Instead of having a desktop-Icon representing just a single program (or file), it could be a start-menu, popping up when be clicked on.

[I just found out, that Android uses a similar way, to let a single icon be a container for multiple programs]

Do you consider to implement something like this in the new version of StartMenuX (or has anybody seen something like this on the PC).

This would dramatically decrease the number of icons on my desktop.

Is there a history for the different Versions of StartMenuX. Some time ago I bought v4, but do not use it currently. I would like to find out, what has been added since there. Can you perhaps already tell, what's planned for the new version v6?
Feb 28 2016 at 10:15am Copy Link

In this way you can see desktop icons inside the start menu.

Lito Just FYI the license is for ONE OS not ONE PC. My definition of PC is all compatible OSes on the same physical hardware. I have a dual boot Win 7 / Win 10 and it wouldn't let me install it as pro on Win 10 until I uninstall it on Win 7. I still hate Win 10 enough to almost never boot into it, so running it in non pro mode isn't that big a deal. I'll just buy another license when this deal comes up again because I like program. :)

Louis H Why do we humans do that? Assume the worst without even checking things out?

I have done it myself.

I have learned, over the years I have been benefiting from deals on BDJ, that they always make good when things are not right. If something really does mess up someone being able to get the deal as advertised, AND (very important here) you let them know BEFORE the deal is over, my experience is that they and/or the vendor make it right.

So why do we humans still complain about a problem before seeking out a solution via such things as Customer Support? (Hey, if you cannot get it resolved through Customer Support, THEN make a public complaint, but at least try CS first.)

Why, simple: with this program I can see every installed program on my computer, all on one screen. It also supports Apps, groups and a menu system.

A single screen showing all my programs, one-click launching (with or without launching with specific arguments), and optimization for visually-impaired users - what's not to like?! This program has been a keeper for several years now, and I don't anticipate that changing anytime in the future.

P User Hi.
Just "bought" this and it turns out to be the already free version from your website, you claim that it's normally cost $19.99, that is the pro version, the normal version is free if I look at your own website.

Sorry, feels a little wrong imo.
May 4 2018 at 7:16am Copy Link
Emily User I haven't quite figured out how to do the tabs (I just started poking around) But if you are referencing one-click launch, you have to make sure you are setting the file inside a folder and not a virtual group. This worked just fine for me which means its the pro version :) (also was able to make a sixth virtual group when the free version is limited to five)

I also have displayfusion pro 9.1 and have had one conflict so far but its not a real problem. When changing the startmenu icon (i hope its easy to input my own) it only registers on the main monitor. displayfusion has seperate taskbars for each monitor.
May 4 2018 at 7:29am Copy Link
Rob User Well I am totally confused.
This seems to be a great Menu add-on, but the way in which it is offered is beyond confusing.

So, how do I interpret the offer? (please tell me if I am wrong !!)

Start Menu X as offered here for free is the Full Pro Version (Ver 6.11) yes or no?

I click the 'Frequently Bought Together' icon Shown as Start Menu 10 here and it seems to be the same software, but it costs $6 Hmmm

Having downloaded the free version, I then go to the upgrade offer and see that it is $7.99. Double Hmmm

I do not care about the price discrepancy, but why is there a price discrepancy?

What the payment appears to buy the user is lifetime upgrades of version 6, throughout it's upgrade life? i.e. this version 6.11, then 6.12, then 6.13 etc etc.

OR, Does it mean lifetime upgrades through all versions - Forever?

We are not talking about a lot of money here and frankly I am happy to pay, but it does appear that there is an advantage to paying the small upgrade price ($6 OR $7.99?) to get upgrades, if indeed that is the deal?

What I am really trying to demonstrate here is this has to be one of the nicest system utilities BUT offered in the most confusing way I think I have ever seen!!

So is it Start Menu X, Start Menu 10, is it Pro, is it not? etc etc etc

Any help on this inmore or less reasonable English and actually understandable to everyone will be most appreciated.

But, to support what you are trying to do, I am loving the program !!!

Rob User But PLEASE tell me which one to order / Pay for - There are 2 versions of what I believe is the SAME PROGRAM

Does this deal include the minor version 6 updates??

Do I click this link https://sites.fastspring....NNIVERSARY
This link is from my free download and purchase the program 'Start Menu X' for £7.99 (That's $10.82 at todays exchange rate)

Do you see what I mean ?????
Which version do I buy?? Everyone keeps saying they are the same, but the prices are different.

I do not want to buy the more expensive version of the same thing if I can get the free udates with the cheaper $6 version.

Sorry to shout but I feel like I am not speaking in the same language here and not being understood.

OrdinarySoft Plese buy 6$ version
OrdinarySoft - May 4 2018 at 12:20pm Copy Link
Rob User Well OrdinarySoft wouldn't you know it - I have just paid the higher price of over $10 (£7.99 in the UK) because I am going to run out of time on the offer (which I didn't want to miss out on) and that is the only offer that indicates I will get free minor updates and additional functionality within the program.

And it's called Start Menu x NOT Start Menu 10

And all the other reasons I have tried to highlight in this confusing offer.

All of that said, I could try for a refund and re-purchase at the $6 price but actually Life is too short - I like the program - I certainly DON'T like the mixed offer and confusion.
Stick to program development, you're good at that, and employ a professional to write your offer descriptions, and please keep it simple.

Time to move on.
May 4 2018 at 12:30pm Copy Link
Emily User bitsdujour is essentially a re-seller. This is why you see promotions like this on here. This is why there is a $6 option for the pro version. It is perfectly normal for the software's company to have the standard price set on their website without discount. That is very common and ethical marketing. The same thing goes with video games. Sites like GOG and HumbleBundle will have deals that Steam does not and the 'normal' price might be $20 higher on the publisher's website.

Hope that clears things up. :)
May 4 2018 at 1:01pm Copy Link
Thomas User it's really annoying, that:

» there is no clear comparisation between Start Menu 10 and Start Menu X
The result? We don't know which one we should buy. So we do not buy it.

» the SW can be used indefinitely - but only on the initial computer, because the HW will change. But we can only activate it during this promotion.

» We have - as many other potential companies - virtual machines. And of course, they a) change often and b) we're not willing to pay one license for each virtual machine.

We evaluated Start Menu 10 and Start Menu X different times and we never bought it. We're happy with the classic start menu, which is for free and very clear in its functions, features and pricing :-]

Doris Ballard Notice that the fellow that posted after I did has gotten two answers from @OrdinarySoft ... while I'm still waiting after a number of hours. Just want to be sure that my question (above) has actually been seen ...
May 4 2018 at 3:01pm Copy Link
Emily User I was able to install notepad++ and move it into a virtual group. When you first 'set up' the program you have to move all the shortcuts into the folder you want to. All the virtual groups are empty by default. Well.. they are all placed in 'Other' for me. If you drag and drop them in the startmenu you will need to confirm admin rights for each one. Notepadd++ also shows up just fine for me in the group manager.

I really like this program and well, thats a downside to virtual machines and the fight against piracy. To be frank, I quite honestly dont see how you are having a hard time with understanding the pricing and believe you are just being snarky.
May 4 2018 at 7:06pm Copy Link
Doris Ballard @Emily Regarding Notepad++ (and several other programs) they simply never showed up on my program list. Most of the programs on my computer showed up there ... but not all of them.

I have placed each program that was on my list into its own virtual group from out of the "Other" category. The problem is with the programs that didn't end up on the list at all: like Notepad++ and my Mozilla Thunderbird Email client. There are also various and sundry other programs that didn't make it onto the list, but I'm not as concerned about those because I don't use them often. Those two however ... not having them on a menu I intend to use all the time is a real setback.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "If you drag and drop them in the startmenu you will need to confirm admin rights for each one." I haven't run into that problem ... and I'm wondering if I might be missing something ...

Thanks for your post! I've been waiting since about 2 PM (east coast) to hear from the people at @OrdinarySoft ... and now it's 10:30 PM. They've answered one fellow twice since then ... makes you wonder!

Thanks again!

Emily User Oh idk. I have windows 10. maybe thats why I have to use the group manager (manage virtual groups) for ease of use? In there you should see all your programs and then you click a check in the particular group you want that file in.

TBH I haven't even touched the start menu since I've installed win10.

I am not sure where the files are located. I need to keep digging.

Doris Ballard Well, I have to assume that there must be *no way* to add the programs that StartMenuX missed which are on my computer, and it seems as if they just don't want to have to admit that it's not working properly ... or perhaps that they don't have a solution for me.

Either way around, it would have made them look a lot better if they'd just bothered to say /something/, even if it was just "we're looking into it" ...

Politely asking a reasonable question and being completely ignored (see my first, second, and third posts above) can't help but leave a potential client with a bad taste ...

I'm sorry to say that I would have to give this company an "F-" in customer support.

Emily User idk what to say. I dont work for them but I was able to add my own shortcut and notepad++ showed up initially just fine for me in the first place. I dont use firefox (I use Vivaldi)

I am curious how my solution for you didn't work by opening the root folder directly and adding in your program.
If i wasn't clear enough before, windows 10's pinned items are direct links to their respectable programs so they wont show up in the actual start menu folder in explorer. But they will show up in the menu itself.

The only problem I could see you actually having is not being able to add files directly through startmenux
I can also pin folders and files (as long as they are executable and not like .css files) I mean, I can post a screenshot link if you want me to prove I have notepad++ in my startmenu

Doris Ballard @Emily Thanks for your concern! @OrdinarySoft should hire you ... your help would be invaluable for them - and for their clients!

This morning, I noticed that the "Pin to Start Menu X" command has been added to the "Quick Menu", and through that floating menu, I was able to add other programs which Start Menu had missed, but strangely enough, not my Thunderbird client. Notepad++ is now in there, though.

I discovered, however, that making a shortcut for Thunderbird in the Thunderbird folder actually did the trick. I have no idea why.

By the way, I have Windows 8.1 ... and I also do not use Firefox. The only Mozilla product I use is the email client: Thunderbird. For a browser, I use Vivaldi, as you do. It's a wonderful browser. I've been using it for months now, and wouldn't trade.

So - no need to post a screenshot, and I do appreciate the trouble you've gone through to help me out!

Before I end, a note of caution from an experience I had this morning. Start Menu X began to be extremely laggy and sluggish, locking up for long moments as I tried to navigate through the virtual folders. At the same time, the system's actual start menu stopped being accessible - it would vanish as soon as I opened it. I had to reboot to make it behave again. I'm going to have to keep an eye on that ... if it's a recurrent problem, I may have to uninstall and go back to the way I was navigating to my programs before.

Ah well .. c'est la vie! Thanks again, Emily!

OrdinarySoft Hi Everyone,

Start Menu X show the actual state of your file system so if you don't see the program on the list then you don't have the proper shortcut in the proper folder.

As you may note the BitDuJour not designed to provide support.
Are you sure that all people on the list interesting to find out your personal settings and our conversation about that?

How many companies do you know who provide free support for the free program in the weekend?

So if you have problems please use Options - Mailto:supportbox(at)

this put your question in line with others and you definitely get the answer, maybe not so fast as you expect but it's worth a try ;)
