What are people saying about TK8 Backup Pro + Lifetime Upgrade Protection

Robert Keen Missed ordering TK8 Backup by 4 minutes. Let me know when it is discounted again.

Adrian Williams I'm a bit of a backup nut, I must admit. I already use ajc backup (occasionally offered on bits du jour) and for a full PC backup I use Terabyte's image for windows and their boot-it NG (another BDJ offer). Finally I use Static EMail backup for my Thunderbird email backups.
I've been looking for a suitable piece of software to work alongside these methods of backup, mainly for archiving and off-line backup. I've tried kls backup and backup4all. The kls software is quite expensive and never seems to have any discounts so when I saw TK8 I thought I'd give it a try.
The software has all the features offered by the other backup software I've used and it has a clean and well thought out interface. You can see all the history of backups and the use of colour shows whether the backup was successful or not. I found this the easiest software to use and the scheduling functions should cover all needs.
I tried to backup Thunderbird and found that the default profile was backed up but not my main one. No problem - since I store the Thunderbird data on a separate partition I just needed to modify the settings to include the 2nd profile folder.
I emailed support and was pleased to receive a reply in about just over 1hour. The reply was detailed and answered my questions fully. Thank you Tonis for that.
In summary, the software is easy to use, flexible and will cater for all your backup needs, including off-line backups like CD/DVD and FTP. Scheduling is available or set the backup as a one-off. Compression and encryption is optional but available if required. Backup methods like full, differential and incremental are also selectable.

Considering the massive discount offered for the pro version it's a must-have backup option. I'll be ordering my copy on Tuesday!

Jim Maioriello @ TK8 Software,

Hi, I visited your website and noticed the list price of the Professional version is listed as $39.95, but it appears as $49.90 on bdj.  Why are they different?

I also, I am not familiar with this product.  How long has it been on the market?
Jul 6 2010 at 1:41am Copy Link

Tonis Kask 1. The current price here (49.90) includes lifetime upgrade protection.

2. TK8 Backup has been on the market since 2003 (7 years now) and is reviewed by many magazines, including PC Magazine.

Tomasz Lisowski Interesting. If a backup is scheduled and the target is not available (e.g. the USB drive is not connected), what does the software do?

Does it prompt the user to connect the drive? Can it recognise that the correct USB drive has been connected and prompt the user until the right one is provided? Is it possible to launch a backup job on connection of a particular USB drive, as opposed to setting up a timed schedule?
Jul 27 2011 at 12:48am Copy Link
0
Tonis Kask There are several choices for such situations. By default the backup is skipped and executed immediately once the target becomes available again. The program has indeed an 'scheduling' option to start the backup task when particular storage device is connected.

Antoine Nope I can't open the files with other software.
I have tested Winrar and 7-Zip.
I use Windows 7 x64 / French locale.

TK8 Settings are quite the default.
Error message in Restoring Backup windows is : Cannot open file "". La syntaxe du nom de fichier, de répertoire ou de volume est incorrecte. and appears after I enter and validate the password.

I have tested both with special characters and without.

Tonis Kask To be honest I haven't heard of such situation before in 8 years thus I do not know what is causing this exactly and how to solve this. It is very strange that some files are protected fine and others are not. I suspect there might be something in your computer that is corrupting your backup files at the time they are written to your hard drive.

Bennet Immanuel @Tonis,
How many computers does the license covers? is it for a single computer?
Jan 14 2012 at 3:37pm Copy Link
0
Tonis Kask We have user based licenses, not computer based. So if you are the one using the program then you need only one license for all your computers. If there are other people using the software as well, they need a license of their own (or a multi-user license).

Bennet Immanuel @Tonis,

Thanks a lot for clarifying. I have been trying your program for 2 days. So far I love the functionality. Eager to buy it. Finally I need one clarification. It seems the program consumes 30Mb realtime when it is idle, and 45Mb (along with Backup.exe) when backup is taking place. Is it normal?

Also I was trying the Tk8 Note program. You have developed the best interface for stickynotes. However again the memory consumption is too high 32Mb. I think it is quite high for a sticky note program. Sorry for being irrelevant to the topic. But if you can improve memory consumption of your programs, it would be very great.
Jan 15 2012 at 10:35pm Copy Link
0
Tonis Kask Hi Robert! The program has to be installed to the computer. It cannot work from the portable drive.
TK8 Software - Jan 15 2012 at 11:44pm Copy Link
0
Tonis Kask Hi Bennet Immanuel,

Yes, the memory consumption around 30 MB is normal for TK8 Backup. Although idle, it is actually monitoring your schedule (and file changes if set up that way).

The new version of StickyNotes (will be released in a week or two) takes a bit less memory (about 25 MB when idle; although it depends how many notes you currently have open on your desktop). In this program the nice graphics is what to blame.

When you take a look at Microsoft Live Messenger or Skype, then they are consuming 30 MB and 150 MB when idle. I will not say that 30 MB used by TK8 is small amount, but today it is extremely hard to create a software with innovative user interface like StickyNotes) and a lot of features (like TK8 Backup) that would take less memory than those 30 MB.

Pavi Johnson Hi, very interested!

Some questions:
1) Do you use the MS VSS to make sure opened/locked files are backed up as well? I have had some trouble with some files (like .pst or open documents) with my current backup solution.

2) Your website says this is a user license. So okay to install and use on more than 1 machine I have at home?

I'll be testing, but this really looks like what I was waiting for!

Best, /Pavi
Jan 16 2012 at 2:26am Copy Link
0
Tonis Kask Hi Pavi,

1) VSS is not used. It's added to the next version, hopefully. So the program can back up open files but not if they are open exclusively. The way Outlook is backed up is that the program will send a closing request to the Outlook. Once Outlook is closed the backup is created and Outlook started after that. It, of course, means that it's good to back up Outlook at the time you are not dealing with your emails (for example at night).

2) Yes, we are using user based licenses. If you are the one using the program then you can install it to all your computers.

BENNET User @Tonis,

I agree with you. Stick notes really has very good interface. I will sacrifice 30 mb of ram for that :) Regarding TK8 backup, again 30mb of memory is not bad as almost every back program would consume same or more amount of ram (results got from trailing other backup softwares). Thanks a lot for your response.

Thanks, I will buy now as I think VSS support is more of a luxury than a requirement. Also I want to support your development!

I understand that you don't promise this feature in the next version, and I really appreciate that honesty as a lot of developers overpromise and underdeliver.

Jan 17 2012 at 7:39am Copy Link

VLM Yes, I have the same question about GoodSync. Does TK8 Backup handle bidirectional synchronization. That is, from a set of 2 locations, does it enable backing up the most recent or user selected version of a file that appears in both locations?

Pavi Johnson I have been testing TK8, and I like it.. a lot! It is lightweight, fast, and has all the features you need in a backup software (compression, encryption, ftp/network, incremental/differential backups, scheduling, profiles, restore individual files, etc.).

Disk images are a bit overrated, at least for me, since Windows get "gummed up" after a while anyway. Just make an image soon after installation with the Win 7 backup tool, and if your drive crashes, restore the image, install required programs and restore necessary files.

Sync software is a different story, and if you need to take work home, why not use dropbox or ftp? Multiple file copies is a bit redundant at on large scale.

Overall, a quality product that is easy to use,

Best, /Pavi

Jaap Aap Your description states that:

1. TK8 Backup uses the popular ZIP compression algorithm, meaning you have full access to the data backed up, even without TK8 Backup."

2. TK8 Backup can encrypt backup files with the same AES 256 algorithm the US government uses to protect their top secrets. Encrypted backups can only be restored using TK8 Backup

The latter suggests that the advantage of being able to use standard 'unzip' solutions is lost when using encryption. Is that indeed the case? It does seem to be an unnecessary constraint to me.

Furthermore, is the Volume Shadow Copy Service part already implemented or planned - this would be an essential feature for me.
Jun 10 2012 at 2:29am Copy Link
0
Tonis Kask Hi,

Yes, in addition to the standard ZIP password security you can use additional layer of encryption. But if you only want to use ZIP protection, you can.

VSS has been in our plans for some time and we have done some test. But we have no certain deadlines for the VSS support yet. Thus I cannot promise it.

Best regards,
Tonis.

Sputnik Seems to be interesting at first sight...

A little problem however with the icon personalisation of a task : when we define a new icon for a task, the selected icon doesn't show completely but only a part of it. I am running under XP SP3.

Also it would be nice to have the opportunity to launch more than one backup at the time : it would be interesting to be able to launch a selected bunch of backups or even the totality of all the existing backup tasks may it be from the UI itself or from the notification zone icon.

Tonis Kask There is no limit in backup size. However, backups that large are not efficient in most cases (despite the software you're using). They take so much time to create. It is much faster to create several smaller backups than one 100GB backup. And if one backup fails for some reason the other is already done for that time.

J S Hi Tonis Kask, I may be in the wrong ball park asking this question, but ''You never never know unless You never never go'':

Q1. To the best of your knowledge will TK8 Backup Pro work in conjunction with Horizon DataSys's RollBack RX program to store their hidden Snapshots of the system?

Q2. NOT including question 1, I see Your website says: "Backups can be saved to your hard drive, local network drives, CD, DVD, USB discs, Zip drives, Jazz drives, MO drives, etc." so does this include NAS (network attached storage drives) and in particular RAiD types 0,1 & 5 NAS devices?

I hope you can reply even if it is after promotion expiry, ThankYOU

Tonis Kask Hi JS,

A1: We haven't tested the program with Horizon DataSys. If the files are visible in Windows Explorer, TK8 can back them up. If not, it cannot.

A2: Yes, NAS devicves are supported.

Best regards,
Tonis.

VLM 1. Does TK8 now do shadow backups, even for Outlook?

2. Does TK8 back up Outlook internal settings, even including autocomplete entries, user dictionaries, accounts (passwords?), and account groups? Or does it primarily back up the pst files?

Tonis Kask Hi VLM!

1. Shadow backups are not supported, unfortunately.
2. Yes, TK8 Backup can back up everything from Outlook, including accounts and settings. After restored, email account passwords must be re-typed first time you're receiving email, though. The program will back up additional data from registries also, not only a pst file.

3. If I understand correctly, this is licensed per user, yes? So I can install, say on old and new machines to facilitate move from one to the other. Or on desktop and laptop. Correct?

4. How is the software activated? (Hardware footprint, entry of a key, ...)?

5. Does TK8 back up and restore AutoComplete information?

6. Are contents of the backups accessible in parts? For example, can one restore only accounts and account settings?

7. Regarding your prior response regarding accounts, are account groups maintained? And is the ORDER of the accounts maintained?

Tonis Kask Hi!

3. Yes, we are using user based licenses. Each user is allowed to install the software up to 3 computers they're using.

4. License key.

5. Depends what software you're using. With IE, Chrome and Firefox, yes.

6. With Outlook backups, only entire Outlook backup can be restored using the Restoring Wizard. Advanced users, though, can extract particular PST file they need, as we're using standard ZIP for archival.

7. Yes

nylg Does TK8 Backup Pro automatically compile/assemble a backup job/group of tasks of typically known type folders/files, if you are running say a system whereby you have moved the My Documents folder to a different partition?

I realise that to set-up some backup jobs then I will have to manually configure these. For example, I have some 'stray' folders/files located in other places/partitions. Does TK8 Backup Pro have a good way of editing backup jobs such that every aspect of a job can be adjusted?

Thanks for dealing with my questions

Tonis Kask Hi Nylg,

When creating a task, you need to specify what (folders) you would like to back up with it. There are some "shortcuts" available, but mostly for application data that is hard to find in the system (like mail applications).

Dmitry S I tested it and i like this small, simple and intuitive tool!
It supports incremental and differential backup methods, so this is good alternative for a file backup instead of heavy monsters like Paragon and Acronis.

It is very useful that the TK8 Backup uses the well known ZIP format as a file container. ( there is no need to install this program on another machine to extract my files there)

p.s.
In spite of the Russian interface has many stylistic issues and has been translated only partly i thinking about purchasing.

Tonis Kask Hi Francis! What do you mean by handling e-mail? Outlook Express and Outlook application backups are integrated directly to the program. Those can be "detected" and backed up automatically if you decide to create such backup task for the program. If you are using some other e-mail application, you will have to select yourself what are the files necessary to back up your e-mails. If those files are in cloud (like when using G-Mail), no file backup application is able to help you unfortunately.

Hi,
I did backups/restore of my OutlookExpress and Thunderbird email bases.

In case of OutlookExpress, the TK8 Backup Pro did one ZIP-file with content of the 'Identity' Folder (messages and the Folders.dbx) and two REG-files with Rules, Account settings, program settings.
As i use Rules to sort incoming message to subfolders (there are many files inside the 'Identity' folder). The Incremental backup will best solution in this case.

In case of Thunderbird - only one ZIP-file with entire content of the 'Profile' Folder (messages, folder structure, account settings etc)

Tonis Kask Hi Jim! We are not using a rental model. Our licenses are for lifetime use. Use the software for as long as you want. All upcoming versions are also free for 3 years. However, if you want to use newer version after that, you would have to pay the upgrade fee. But you are not forced. You can keep using the older version for as long as you want.

Hallo,
your software seems to be interesting, using regular zip-format is an advantage and especially the userfriendly policy (licensed per user, no annoying hardware footprrinted online activation, lifetrime upgrades) is an additional argument for considering a purchase.
Nevertheless the following questions:

1. how will the software recognize/ handle external drives / usb-sticks with
often changing drive letters?

2. does the software save open files (e.g. when working on a word document ?
If not, does it include the word auto-saved versions of the document?

H.H.

Terster HI. I don't understand about the upgrade... you state that customers are entitled to free upgrades for 3 years, yet the "deal" for this is "Lifetime Upgrade Protection". So... are you saying that Lifetime really = 3 years?

Also, i do see that you can back up to cd/dvd/br and usb devices.

Can you backup to a network location/mapped drive?

Does this software "create" the bootable disk so that you can do a backup from booting up/restoring from booting up or does it have to be done in windows?

Can you confirm that this is Windows 8.1 compatible?

Thanks for allowing the questions.

Gerald Attrick Folks here would be well advised to take Macrium Reflect backup software for a test drive before making any final decision. It has scads of features TK8 probably doesn't, given the descriptions provided here. Examples: encryption of backup files, image backups as well as easily-scheduled file and folder backups of the full, incremental, and/or differential variety. But, then, some folks prefer "lightweight" software.

Tonis Kask Hi H.H!

1. For such situations it is recommended to fix the drive letter for the device, so it would remain the same. The program will honor your setting to back up to specific destination (including the drive letter).

2. Yes, the program can back up open files, excluding exclusively opened (and locked) files. Normal files (like Word, Excel, etc) can be opened and can be backed up at the same time.

Regards,
Tonis.

Tonis Kask Hi Francis!

Outlook backups cannot be incremental (as the whole data is inside single pst file and as we have a file backup program, it will back up entire file). So when you back up Outlook, the program will make a complete backup.

Tonis Kask Hi Gerald!

I don't know what exactly does Macrium offer, but I'm sure it's a decent application from what I've heard. However, of those features you listed, all are supported by TK8 except image backups. But we truly wanted to keep the program a pure file backup application and not expand it to "do-everything" solution. That's why image backups are not supported and will never be.

Tonis.

Gerald Attrick Hi Tonis,

Over the years, I've used four different backup packages, and Reflect is "best of breed" by far. It's more than "decent," IMHO. My affection for this software increased enormously two months ago... when my hard drive started making numerous write errors. The lead tech at the repair shop told me the drive would have to be replaced and, of course, my Win 7 Pro OS would have to be reinstalled. I told him to replace the drive, and I would handle the latter chore.

When I got the machine home, I ran a restore job using a Reflect rescue disk and a recent IMAGE backup made by means of a regularly scheduled full / incremental backup jobs. Bottom line? Reflect reloaded about 125 GB of OS, program, and data files... including countless properties and settings. In less than 90 minutes, I was back in business.

I'm sure TK8 is also a fine software product. That's why I chose my words carefully. I didn't advocate everyone buy Reflect. I merely suggested they take advantage of a free home trial and decide for themselves if they want the additional features it provides at the risk of encountering greater sophistication and, therefore, complexity.

Steven Aves I've been looking for a way to easily archive my files. Backups have / are done via Mozy Pro for my most critical items. But for those files I'm not currently using or feel I should keep I've been looking for a way to archive and track. I've used proprietary software in the past (twice) and got burned.

PKZip / Securezip I like but it's a bit cumbersome in the long run. I really like the standard .zip file and .exe for long term use.

Well, I downloaded the trial version first. Installation was straight forward, nothing funky like trying to install toolbars grin.

Testing surprised me. It created an exe file of over 5500 files of various sizes:
Time elapsed: 1 minute 52 seconds
Files compressed: 5257
Total size: 999.41 MB
Compressed size: 331.48 MB

Tomasz Lisowski OK. Does setting the code page affect the DISPLAY of the filenames only, or the entire string handling abilities of the software?

I understand, that after setting the Polish code page I can have Polish filenames displayed correctly, but some other languages may be displayed using some garbled characters ... I guess I can live with that.

My concern is, if I make a backup of some files, whose names use different languages, I can have them also garbled, when I do a restore. Please confirm, if the files are restored to their original filenames, regardless of the display code page set in the program.

Tomasz Lisowski In my opinion, the Unicode support nowadays is a MUST. We are dealing with people from all parts of the world, so the support for characters from more than one code page is necessary. Moreover, I didn't get a reply to my question about the correctness of the restore, if filenames are spelled in different languages ...

I presume, your software isn't written in .NET, as then you'd get it virtually for free :)

Tonis Kask Hi Mustang! What do you mean by Dropbox support? At the moment you can both collect the data from the Dropbox and store it elsewhere, and you can also gather data from anywhere and store the backup in Dropbox (what I personally do, for example).
TK8 Software - Dec 27 2014 at 12:58am Copy Link

Tonis Kask Hi Thomasz! Unfortunately indeed adding unicode support requires a complete rewrite, which, at declining utility sales (for everyone globally) and in the age of 1.99 apps and (good) online services isn't justified. The filename correctness depends from the code page and there is no infinite answer. In most cases, weird characters between code pages can be mixes just fine. And if the backup is restored in the same system, everything will be retained as it was at the moment backed up. For example, characters from Estonian code page (ä, ö, ü, õ, etc) can be mixed quite well with Polish characters (a, l, e, etc.). At least last time we tested. But mixing those with Russian characters (?, ?, ?, ?, etc) doesn't play well indeed. And vice versa - with Russian code page set, Russian file names are stored correctly. So if the unicode is a requirement for you, I would strongly suggest you to take a look at some other utility.
