Sandro Perotti Interesting, although a bit difficult to configure with my limited tech skills.
One question: it seems Kaspersky AV is mandatory. I have Avast! running (besides MS's own). May I skip yours? If not, what do I do with mine (both)?
Thank you.

...and as stated above: Is it possible to deactivate the AV and Firewall option in case that one just wants to monitor and use another Internet Security software?

Tatyana Medova First of all, hello everybody and thank you for your questions.

@Sandro Perotti:
Yes, Traffic Inspector may seem a little bit complex at first, but that's because of the sheer amount of functionality that it has. Don't worry you'll get used to it. Kaspersky Gate Antivirus (KGA) comes bundled with this version of TI and you can't change that. However, you have a couple of options regarding KGA usage:

1) you can choose not to install KGA during the TI installation
2) you can install KGA but subsequently disbale it in TI settings
3) you can install KGA and actually configure it and use it

As for running multiple antiviruses on one machine, this is technically possible. However, we generally do not recommend that.

Tatyana Medova @Robert Repka:

First of all, Netgear, Linksys and D-Link are all hardware appliances (usually *nix-based) and Traffic Inspector is a Windows-based program. Hardware routers can do a lot of things, but they are hard to configure and not very convenient (especially, advanced routing, traffic shaping, URL filtering features).

Traffic Inspector is easier to use and features convenient GUI for configuring advanced functions.

Tatyana Medova @Karl Valentin:

1. Regarding the subscription fee
License for Kaspersky Gate Antivirus plugin is time-limited. Following the expiration date, antivirus updates are disabled. The plugin remains fully functional otherwise. A customer has to extend the license, if they wish to have continued access to antivirus updates.

2. Regarding AV and Firewall deactivation
You can choose not to install KGA or disable KGA after installation. TI firewall can be disabled in program settings.

My machine: Windows 7 Pro SP1 32-bit on Dell Precision T7500.
When I attempt to get a key from the Activation Wizard (Activation Key Recovery -- Data Entry) I get the error message "The transport failed to connect to the server".
I tried at least ten times, to no avail.

The activation key is sent by email.

The activation procedure is as follows:

1). Internet connection is required during installation and activation. Once installation is complete, open the Administration Console (Start, All Programs, Traffic Inspector, Administration Console).

2). When prompted with the server selection dialog, leave the Server field blank to connect to the local instance of the Traffic Inspector gateway.

3). To activate the program, click on the Activate the purchased license link, select Purchased license activation option, click Next, enter your activation key, click Next and then Activate. Please wait while the program contacts our activation server to finalize the activation process.

4). Congratulations! You have successfully installed and activated
Traffic Inspector.

P.S. Last time we checked activation emails, everything worked OK. We'll check it again.

Tatyana, Thanks for this offer, but, while I notice that we 'can install the program at any time', activation contacts your servers for authentication - so this seems to mean that our capability to install the program depends entirely upon your servers being online AND your company still being in business.
Is that right?
If Smart-Soft goes out of business, is sold and TI discontinued, then the program becomes completely useless.
Am I correct? Thanks.

Eustace Phenackertiban @Phred E - Umm... yeah, that would be true of pretty much *any* software which requires online activation, which is to say, much of software sold today.

As far as TI is concerned, it installed flawlessly by simply following the instructions (on Win7 x64), so "Thank you!" Smart-Soft and BDJ. That said, having opened the program and followed the tutorial above to configure it, I am not seeing the utility of the program for a single user with a small (three computer + tablet and smartphone) home network. I can see where this would be nice for administering a small office with several users, but for us "one man shops," I don't see the value add of having this program in the loop. Am I missing something?

Watcher1924 Hello to all. Thanks for the offer.
I would like to ask:
1) Can we install/register the program even after one year (e.g. after 18 months)?
2) If for some reason we need a fourth installation can we resolve this be contacting your support team?
3) The installer is about 32.5 MB but at your site, in the requirments tab, says:
"400 MB free hard disk space (will need additional space for working with cache files and statistics)".
4) Can the KGA be used indefinitely (despite the limited updates of it)? What is the expiration date? Does it matter if we install it later (i.e. will the expiration date be shifted)?

Tatyana Medova @Bob Bacle, Frank Carreira, mishasin
Unfortunately, the error you are getting ("Installation ended prematurely because of an error.") is typical for Windows and may be caused by a lot of things. Please refer to many online manuals and how-tos on how to diagnose and solve your particular issue. There are no problems with installing Traffic Inspector on a licensed version of Windows 7 x86-64 or Windows XP x86. This has been tested before, and I checked it once again now.

Internet connection is required for activating many products. This is a common way of doing things. Also, our company has just celebrated its 10th anniversary, things are going well and we are not going anywhere. :)

Phred E @Tatyana & Eustace - yes, I was afraid of that. If your company had the secret elixir of preserving any company from insolvency in a capitalist economy then your method of making your products work would be fair, but somehow I don't believe you do. :(
Certainly, a one-time validation of a code transmitted to a customer would be reasonable, but to expect that your servers/business will be waiting into the indefinite future seems a long bow to draw.
Should I send you a list of the thousands of dot-com companies that are no longer extant, even after 10 years of operation, and whose products no longer fully function? Vast amounts of wasted money and expertise.
Your method hangs entirely upon the good grace of your bank manager, and so I believe your software model is severely flawed.
Is there some other way you have..?

I downloaded the file, then unzipped it to its own folder. I then ran the installation program, and at the end, left the checkbox checked to run the program. I then checked my email for the activation keys, and after choosing to "activate purchased version," used copy/paste to paste the ID and the parts of the key into the appropriate boxes. I then clicked the "Activate" button. The first time, it gave me a "Demo" activation, with a little "Caution" triangle at the right side. I clicked "Activate" again, and this time it came back as activated "Gold 5." Apparently, there was a problem connecting to the activation server on the first click. Anyway, not sure what "Gold 5" means, but the program appears to be fully functional at this point.

The short answer is: yes. The exact nature of networking links (wired or wireless) inside your home or office network does not matter. As long as all traffic destined to the Internet passes through Traffic Inspector, you should be able to control / monitor it.

1) Make sure that you install Traffic Inspector with admin rights.
2) Make sure your antivirus software does not interfere with the installation process.
3) Clear your %Temp% folder.

Once again, the issue may be specific to your particular PC. So, please search the Web for a possible solution.

For a limited period of time, Traffic Inspector will be available completely free of charge on Bits du Jour web site. As part of the deal you get a free lifetime license for 5 users.

Traffic Inspector has all the functionality you need when connecting your home or office network to the Internet. It is an all-in-one solution for network security, web access control and detailed traffic analysis. Traffic Inspector features a secure firewall to protect against network threats, web access rules for blocking unwanted Internet resources, antivirus for scanning web and email traffic, SMTP gateway for filtering spam, a billing system, a bandwidth limiter and logging and reporting facilities and more. Don't miss the opportunity to get a free Traffic Inspector license for 5 users.

my question why is the license from you guys only good for 365 days and one machine and the are saying lifetime and 5 machines? I've contacted their support with this problem and they said to contact you as you are aware of this problem.

I asked this question yesterday, but I could not find any answer in all the responses found on the site.

James K Installed on my Windows 7 x64 computer without issue, but the server refuses to start. Am uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling. Will let you know if it works.

Tatyana Medova @Bob Levy:

Before you can generate reports, data has to be collected by the program. Installing the program is not enough. You have to create a user account and access the Internet using that account. One day is usually enough to collect enough data to start generating reports.

"Sofar this product is worth excatly what I paid for, a far cry from $195.00!"
Jumping to conclusions in never a good idea :)

"Must I spend a lot of time with help or tutorials to figure out how to use?"
Alas, there is no magic wand. He that would eat the kernel must crack the nut :)

Seriously though, give Traffic Inspector a good try. It's worth it.

Combining licenses means, for example, having two 5-user licenses for different Traffic Inspector installations and using them as a single 10-user license for a single installation. This, clearly, is not allowed.

Upgrading the license is a different thing. Upgrading the license allows a customer to add more user accounts to the program. The price to upgrade the license is the price difference between the current license and the new license. You can upgrade the license, if you so choose.

Tatyana Medova @Roger Cale:

Some clarifications on a licensing model.

A purchased license (or the one you get as part of this giveaway) entitles a customer to free updates for one year. When entitlement expires, the program installation remains fully functional. A customer has to renew the entitlement, if they wish to have continued access to new product updates. So, in other words, license for a program and the ability to use the program is lifetime, free updates are for one year only.

Traffic Inspector is licensed per computer in a sense that if you purchase a 5-user license, you must use it on a single PC. You can transfer the license to a different PC, however you cannot use the same license on multiple machines simultaneously.

Also, a 5-user license means a program allows you to create up to 5 user accounts.

You have to create a user account and access the Internet using that account.

Current connections can be viewed here:

Traffic Inspector - Reports - Current Connections

Information about visited resources can be viewed here:

Traffic Inspector - Reports - Network Statistics

While current connections will be immediately displayed, it may take up to one day to collect data for generating reports (Network Statistics).

Tatyana Medova @Watcher1924:

The date of the last allowed antivirus update is counted from the KGA plugin activation date. There are two activation options for the KGA plugin:

1) KGA license is purchased separately and a separate key is used to activate the KGA plugin
2) There is a single license for Traffic Inspector and KGA and both components are activated by the same key and at the same time

The deadline will depend on the option you choose.

Jeremiah Stover Tatyana Medova - you miss my complaint altogether - the fine print on this page says "This promotion can be used to upgrade or extend an existing license."
note the word "existing" coming after the word "upgrade" - which you just apparently stated is not allowed. That is my complaint - a clear and obvious difference between the rules stated on this page and the rules allowed by the software creator. It would be nice if the rules on BitsDuJour were correct.

Tatyana Medova @Jeremiah Stover:

Thank you for pointing out this inconsistency, we'll ask BitsDuJour to correct it. The reasoning that led to this kind of wording could be something like this:

There are two license types: a trial license and a purchased license. The license that is freely available as part of this promotion is the one that you usually purchase in other circumstances. You can start out by using a trial license (time-limited). Does a trial license qualify as an existing license? Well, yes. You can then use the license that you got here on BitsDuJour (which is lifetime) to upgrade or extend (in a sense).

James K It's telling me that my Network Driver is not installed, which is obviously not true. How can I fix this?

internet explorer I still cannot activate the program (see my previous comment about 24 hours ago), and I am very disappointed that no one has replied to my prior comment, even to ask for more information. In case I didn't give enough info then, I am running TI under 64-bit Windows 7 on a multi-core AMD computer. I have literally installed scores of programs on it in the past without running into this problem before.

Tatyana Medova @internet explorer

If I understand correctly, you installed only the Administration Console.

When you choose to install the server component (Traffic Inspector), the console is installed automatically because that's how you administer TI. There is an option to install the AC separately, because sometimes you want the console and Traffic Inspector on different PCs (in this case you will be administering TI remotely).

Now, as for the activation process, it only applies to the server component, so you have to install TI itself (not just the console) to activate it.

Also, installing Traffic Inspector on your desktop computer may not be very useful. TI is designed to be installed on a separate PC serving as a gateway for your network.

internet explorer DearTatyana:
Thank you for your reply. If I understand you correctly, TI would not be useful to me, even if I had 2 or more computers networked together, unless I was routing all the internet traffic through one of them. If that's true, then I guess I won't be needing it, as it wouldn't be of much use to me even in that situation, since I have never run all my traffic for multiple computers through just one of them. I'm sorry to hear that, since I thought I might be able to use some of TI's features. Too bad. Anyway, please correct me if I am wrong about the program not doing any good in just a one computer set up with its own separate internet connection, even if it is networked with other Windows and/or Linux computers in a LAN. If yours won't help me, do you know of any other program that would do the job?
