Bradley MacDonald Looks like a very nice product. Does it allow me to do multiple step builds?
1. Compile a Delphi App
2. Build a Installation using INNO Setup
3. Send up to my Website via FTP.

It would also be very nice if I could update the projects - like changing the Delphi Appication version information - and change some of the text in the INNO Build.

Kyle A Yes, that's exactly what it's for. Updating of versions and properties when building Delphi projects, settings and definitions in Inno Setup files, generic updates to text files, and FTP/SFTP uploading are all built-in.

Stefan Hauber Assuming I have a certain compiler, your tool currently does support, e.g. Delphi 2010. In case some times later, when VisualBuild came to version 8, I decide to buy Delphi 2012: Do I have to upgrade VisualBuild to be able to build my programs with Delphi 2012 or can I still use VisualBuild 7.x?

Or are the supported tools kind of script-programs users can modify and include in VisualBuild to allow them to run it with other or updated tools too?

Can I include my own 'compiler', meaning a self-written tool, which creates from a given file (source) another file (destination)?
Feb 2 2010 at 6:06pm Copy Link

Kyle A If we need to update Visual Build to support a newer version of Delphi, and the update is part of a major release (i.e., v8), there would be an upgrade fee for that version.
http://www.kinook.com/support.html

The built-in actions can't be modified by the end user, but you can add your own actions for calling other compilers and tools.

Mica D I am having more than one version of C++Builder on my system. How can I choose the C++Builder-version (e.g. the location of the compiler-program) when adding a 'Make C++ Builder' node to my project?

I tried, but VisualBuild always seems to use the newest version.

Jan 31 2011 at 8:50am Copy Link

Kyle A TortoiseSVN is just a GUI front-end for Subversion, and would not be reliable in an automated build process. Visual Build does include an action to call the Subversion client directly.

Richard Andersen Well I'm using TortoiseSVN as basis for VisualSVN which is a VS plugin. Can the version of Subversion which is installed by TortoiseSVN be used by Visual Build? I imagine there might be some conflict if I install a different version of Subversion as well.
Jan 31 2011 at 9:14am Copy Link
0
Kyle A AFAIK, TortoiseSVN doesn't install Subversion itself, but rather links with its libraries. It looks like VisualSVN does have an installer option to install the Subversion command-line tools (and it also adds the location to the PATH), which Visual Build could call.

Richard Andersen You're probabvly right, the TortoiseSVN FAQ says this:

"Do I need to install Subversion before I can use TortoiseSVN?
No. TortoiseSVN comes with everything you need to access a repository. Only if you want to set up a server then you will need the Subversion package".

I can see that I have svn.exe, svnadmin.exe and svnlook.exe in the VisualSVN/bin folder. So maybe that will do it.

Thanks!

Deleto Maximo Richard,
yes, Visual Build works fantastically with Subversion (see http://www.visualbuild.co...action.htm, which Kyle already mentioned). I am using VS2010 with VisualSVN, Tarma InstallMate and Visual Build (Trial yet, waiting for this offer desperately!). It's an awesome team, Visual Build runs very smoothly.

I must say Visual Build is a fantastic solution and I am very mad I haven't stumbled upon it earlier. All that is left to me now is the core task of a software developer: coding. I love it!
Kyle, thank you to Kinook Software for such a great product and such a great offer!

Trond Grontoft I bought Visual Build a while ago, and it's a fantastic tool.

My main job
- runs the Delphi XE compiler
- creates the help file
- runs Sisulizer to update the translation dlls
- creates the install file (plus a zipped version)
- updates the download page on the web
- transfers everything to the web
- and sends an email to everybody who needs to know

All in one go. And it gets the compiler switches and version / build numbers correct - every time. It's almost too easy to make a new release these days.

I also use it for a lot of small tasks. Like updating the price list on our web from our back office database. And backing up the SVN repository. And running a daily analysis of our source code...

In short: one of my best investments.

Shazza Looks like the current version doesn’t support Delphi 10.3 (which given it’s only been out a few days isn’t surprising). When do you expect to update it for 10.3, and will that be a major version upgrade? What is the pricing for upgrades?
Nov 26 2018 at 9:04am Copy Link
0
Kyle A In the next few weeks. It will be a minor release (free). Regular price for major release upgrades is $149.

Shazza Thanks Kyle,

I’ve been looking at the version history on the website, and it seems as though there is no consistent time between minor version releases. I’m trying to get a sense of how much time I can expect to be able to use my $99 investment before an upgrade is required in order to keep pace with Delphi changes. The last time this deal was offered, it was for v8.7, and the next release was 9.0. You have already said the next release will be a minor release in a couple of weeks, but will that release be 9.8 or 9.9?

Cheers
Shane

Kyle A v9.8. Given that there were 18 months from Delphi 10.2 to 10.3, it's likely that the next VBP release will be good for Delphi changes for quite a while.

Bradley MacDonald Quick Question - I use a Software Licensing tool call WinLicense. I see that on your website - you have not got any of these types of Shareware licensing tools listed - and I understand they are a little obscure.

How would you recommend handling this sort of program? Is there a way I can setup a custom command line to do that function in the build? As I have to do it twice in the build process - (once for EXE and once for the installer) - the build process would have to wait for it to complete before moving to the next step.

Thoughts?

Shazza I see in the samples folder there is a "build launcher" application. Unfortunately I don't understand C#, but if I understand the concept correctly, it seems to be front end for setting some properties and kicking off a build script. Is that correct?

If so, is it possible to write a launcher in Delphi, and if so, how would that application interact with the build script to set the values, kick off the build etc?
Nov 28 2018 at 1:28pm Copy Link
0
Kyle A Yes, the BuildLauncher collects inputs, then generates and calls Visual Build with command-line parameters to define macro values used by the build script. You could do the same thing with a Delphi app.

Mark Krieger Quick question - while the text works well under 4K screens (need to adjust the columns though) the icon bar is kind of unusable with microscopic icons.
Will you be adding bigger icons still in the v9 updates?

Kyle A It's on our list. For now, a couple of options:

1) Modify the properties of the Visual Build shortcut -> Compatibility tab -> Change high DPI settings -> Override high DPI scaling behavior --> set to System (Enhanced)

or

2) Create the following DWORD registry value setting with a value of 0 and restart Visual Build:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Kinook Software\Visual Build Professional 9\Options\DPIAware

Shazza @Kyle (FYI) I tried both options for DPI scaling and neither worked on my QHD monitors. I have resorted to customising the toolbar and selecting "large icons" which makes them readable and hence usable, but it's not pretty.

Gary Smith It is commonly understood that the terms updates and upgrades have different meanings.

Updates are for new releases for a major version number (e.g., 1,1, 1.2.4, 1.9.3, all for the 1.x major release).

Upgrades are when the major version number changes. (e.g., 1.x changes to 2.x). Typically a major number changes only when significant features are added to the software.

Given these common definitions, in the Fine Print section, there is a statement that is confusing:

"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version."

That statement implies that upgrades will not be free since an Upgrade is a major version number change. There is no mention of "Updates." Should the first use of "upgrade" been "updates" instead, as in:

Updates to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version.

???

Thanks in advance for your answer.
