What are people saying about Webfont Essentials

Bruno Verschraegen What is required? If I design my own website and have that hosted by my web provider, is that ok? Or must the font be installed on a web server we own? Asking because of the mention "this font collection can be used on any number of web servers that are legally owned by the purchaser "

Martin Kotulla You just place the font files on your web server and make their file path known to the web browser through the CSS file of your web page.

Carsten Mads How many licenses do I need in the following situation(s)?

1. I develop my own website(s) – first on my offline development server platform(s) (Wamp/Mamp/ Vagrant etc.), on different PC/laptops for testing, and secondly, I transfer this website(s) to my preferred ISP Hosted web server/Hotel(s) (online).

2. Same situation as no. 1. But her it is a couple of different client’s websites.
Thank you for your answer – in advance

VLM Description above says "How about 150 webfonts in EOT, WOFF, and TTF formats? Plus 150 TrueType fonts?" I believe the second sentence is redundant. :):)

Martin Kotulla Maz, here is the documentation on handling webfonts:

http://www.softmaker.net/...als_en.pdf

For a CMS such as WordPress, you copy the font definitions from the CSS file that we provide to the CSS file that your CMS uses.

Martin Kotulla Carsten:

For case #1, one license is sufficient.

For case #2, your clients need to have their own license. Even if one client has multiple web sites, he needs only own license.

Martin Kotulla VLM, no, but that's a bit tricky to explain:

- We include 150 fonts in EOT, WOFF, and TTF format for webfont usage.

- And we include 150 fonts in TTF format for desktop usage.

But the TTFs for webfont usage are slightly different. They are modified in a way that end users cannot simply download them from your site to fill their font collection. They look the same, behave the same, but they cannot be installed as regular Windows TTF fonts.

VLM Martin Kotulla - Ah!!! I did not know that. Tricky you are, you developers in developer land!

Does any of this have to do with the Open Type standard?

Martin Kotulla VLM, there are two types of OpenType fonts:

1. Those with TrueType font outlines - extension TTF
2. Those with PostScript Type 1 font outlines - extension OTF

The ones in the Webfont Essentials collections are #1.

VLM Martin Kotulla - Thank you for your kind explanations! Regarding OpenType fonts, does this mean that we can use the full international/extended/2-byte character set with these fonts? (I fear that I'm not using the correct terminology. Correct me at will. :)

Martin Kotulla LVM: Yes, most of the fonts in this package have extended character sets, beyond what the old Windows ANSI character set offered.

VLM Yes, "extended character sets", that's the terminology I was looking for, somewhere in my mind. :) Thanks Martin!
