ehab looks interesting, does it pop up an alert if there is an app requesting a out connection?

Andrew Niese Hi ehab, such activity would be shown in the connection table, but alerts are not displayed unless you set up alert criteria ahead of time with rules. Some rule triggers are shown here: http://www.freshsoftware....rules.html
One newer trigger not shown is "Upstream/downstream traffic exceeds XX KB/sec". Hope that answers your question.

Rick Truell Will a single license work on both Mac and Windows, or is a separate license required for each platform?
Jan 21 2013 at 7:46pm Copy Link
0
Andrew Niese Hi Rick, the software is designed for Windows only. It's possible it may run through emulation or virtualization software -- XNS ran on WINE as recently as 2 years ago, but that compatibility is not actively supported. If you can get it working, more power to you. In any case, a single license is good for 1 physical computer. If you want to run it on 2 different computers, you need 2 licenses.

Andrew Niese @Andrew Harlan: To clarify, a license is good forever. Free product upgrades are good for all X-NetStat versions 5.xx. X-NetStat 5.0 came out in 2004, and has been actively updated and supported for the last 9 years. There are no plans for a X-NetStat 6.0 at this time. If and when 6.0 comes out, it will be considered the next "major" version, and you would need to pay to upgrade your 5.x license to a 6.x license to use the 6.x software. That upgrade would be discounted at 50%, and include free updates for all versions 6.x. This is the normal policy. If version 6.0 is released down the line, anyone participating in today's promotion can email me directly with their order number and I will waive any 5.x to 6.x upgrade fee.

Tom Colvin Can I use this program to track other computers, tablets, etc within my wired and wireless network. I particularly want to track which devices are connected to my network.
Jan 24 2013 at 10:08pm Copy Link
0
Andrew Niese Tom, hypothetically you could, but it couldn't do that right out of the box. For a tablet, what you would need is an Android/iOS/WinRT app that runs in the background, and when connected to your WiFi, opens a TCP connection to the computer running X-NetStat. You would then see the tablet as being on your network. However, I don't know of any apps that do that.

You may be able to get this information from your router, its often under "client list" or "device list".

I have another program, Sentry, that can monitor devices across a network in a basic fashion, provided the software is installed on all the devices you want to monitor, and all of those devices run Windows. It would work on Win8 Pro tablets, but not Android/iOS.

Hope that helps some. If you don't have any luck with this, please feel free to email me, and I will try to point you in the right direction.

disenchanted Nothing against software developer's using DRM measures, as I feel everyone deserves to get paid for their software products/creations.

But I can see where the "no transfer" could be an issue.

If something bad happens to our home pc, would we at least get a "discount" to re-purchase a new license?

Examples:
1. When I upgraded from a old pentium to a quad core, I totally wiped the hard drive on my pentium, reloaded only what came on that pc (windows only), then donated the old system to a local charity.

.2. if my current computer dies (ie motherboard fries) . Then I'd buy a new pc as it's cheaper than repairing the old one.

If something like this happens, would we at least get a "decent discount" to get a new license?

Carsten Mads What version of 5.6 is this – is it the Professional version as the Screenshots shows? Also the descriptions here and the price, seems to match the Professional version.

If this version is the Professional version, on sale here… there is a big mismatch, regarding the “no transfer” issue as others are mentioning… According to an earlier sale on BDJ ( link: www.bitsdujour.com/softwa...ofessional ) and on your own website ( link: www.freshsoftware.com/xns/pro/buy.php ) where transfer is allowed.

Last but not least important - it seems that version 5.6 – according to the download page on your site, is a stable Beta 2 version, from December 2012, is this correct? ( link: www.freshsoftware.com/xns...wnload.php )

Please clear these things up - thanks

Barnet We need clarification from the developer: Conflicting information on website. Version 5.6 appears to be a BETA release. Pro version reports unlimited support and updates for major version - this case 5.x, and they say if you get another computer, download again and use your code, and if you lose your reg code they will give you another. So what up with no transfer allowed?

The LITE version reports it is currently version 5.1 (released 7/15/2004)

Also, while not a big deal in itself, the website has some information that has not been updated for years - "We are 7 years old today" posted in 2005? This leads me to not trust any information as being current.

JLG I would like this as I tried it years ago but never bought it, but just which version am I getting for the 19.99 deal? There is another link here to buy X-Netstat Pro for 5% off the 49.99 price, which appears to be the exact same price as the version shown here for 19.99, and the Fresh Software website only shows two versions, the one(s) here for either 19.99 or 49.99 (less 5% discount) and a Lite version. This is pretty confusing, is the 19.99 version some kind of crippled shareware that is going to pop up reminders to get the Pro version?

Andrew Niese @Mappi75 @disenchanted @Justin West: I'm sorry guys, I must have ticked the wrong box under license info. Transfer to another PC is NOT prohibited, only the concurrent use of a single license on more than one PC. So, you can uninstall on one PC and move it to another, just don't deploy it on 2 PCs at the same time, unless you buy for 2 computers. I will correct the info. Transfer of a license from one person/organization to another needs written permission (just email me.) Hope that helps.

Carsten Mads Hmmm – It seems that all this confusions, has been going on for a long time (when one looks, at the 25 older Comments, in the former BDJ Sale on the X-NetStat 5.6 Pro version, from January 2013).

The Vendor of this Software could/should have cleared all this things up, before this new BDJ Sale - I guess he has his own reasons…

I think it is fair to mention, that this Software collects Statistic and phones Home – FYI, this is the Vendors reply in the old Comments from the last Sale:
“The software reports usage statistics to freshsoftware.com every 30 days. If that is not agreeable with you, please don't order the product, or contact me for a custom-built version.”

Andrew Niese @Carsten -- To answer your earlier question, yes the current build is from December --- Beta 2 became the final release of 5.6 because it passed all the test requirements for RTM. You're right that I should have been more careful to double-check the website before this promotion. It's your right not to buy it if you don't want to.

That being said, as a developer, I've made X-NetStat my life's work, and stand behind it. Version 1.0 came out in 1998, and the current version represents 15 years of R&D. I have many happy customers, and guarantee your satisfaction, or your money back: http://www.freshsoftware....ensing.php

3. Is any geo tracking going on?

Steven Avery Hi,

Allowing that the price on Bits is good, and the general concept of program is good (what is happening in TCP-IP land on my puter) and that we are ok with licensing and privacy stuff ...

Could one of our experts do a short comparison of pluses and minues compared to other freeware and (pay) shareware?

Or point us to a good discussion online, although Fresh might not always be included in the round-ups, simply based on company size and visibility.

Thanks.

SHA-1: ee2447c61001512509865476a8cf183ff43d0584

Unfortunately, Windows 8 SmartScreen is warning on this file because it is brand new, so Windows 8 users may see a caution prompt even though the file is digitally signed. This should go away after a little while...

Gonzo I feel somehow confused. The title mentions X-NetStat 5.6. The regular price is USD 49.95, which based on the official website corresponds to the Pro version. However there's an "Frequently Bought Together" showing: X-NetStat Professional, which would seem to indicate this is the Standard/Lite edition.
To make things worse, in the official website, there's wording about Standard/Lite version being a trial that can be registered/bought, but no mention as to how to buy it or the price.

Can anyone shed some light as to whether this is the Standard/Lite version or the Pro version?

Also, the official website reads "Get licensed for life with unlimited support & upgrades."; however the fine print here indicates free updates until next major version. Which is correct?
I realized there hasn't been a major version release in several years, but I'd still like clarification on updates/upgrades.

Andrew Niese Hi Gonzo,

Constantin is right, it's for the Professional version. The 5.x license is good for life, and upgrades are free through 5.99. If and when a version 6.0 comes out, there would be a discounted upgrade path from your 5.x license. I use a somewhat conservative versioning system, so I would say there have been many "major version" releases since 5.0. There several new features just from 5.6 to 5.61. Hope that helps answer your questions.

Andrew Niese Hi Daniel, you would need 1 license per virtual machine. Thanks for letting me know about the unit pricing. I just updated the coupon so the unit price floats down from $19.95 -- the 60% off is now applied after the volume discount.

There used to be a site license option, usually for companies, but I hadn't considered a site-license for home. That may be worth looking into. For now I think the per-PC model is working well. If you have additional thoughts please let me know.

Daniel Gaudet Thanks Andrew for the change. I was looking at getting 10 licenses, but 11 licenses is actually a few dollars cheaper.

As for the home site license, we have quite a bit of PCs home and I have a home lab with a number of VMs on it so it would be handy to have a home license. While we are only 4 in the house, we have over 15 PCs and quite a bit of VMs. It would be nice to have this as part of the standard image on the systems, especially when I am trying to troubleshoot a networking issue.

There are a few other vendors that offer home site licenses. The one that's top of mind is DisplayFusion. It offers a very competitively price home license. While it's a totally different product, I would classify it as a required install on my systems and I would like to consider X-NetStat as one such product too.

On more question. If I get 11 licenses, I am allowed to install it on up to 22 systems, correct? As part of those 22, half of them (11) need to be installed on 11 laptops, or can the 22 installed be on any type of systems?

Ricky Rick @Dave V - and the Software Vendor: with what you said quoted below I agree with you 100%:

The user activity tracking 'feature' cannot be disabled by the user. Interesting that software designed to help you sniff out what other software may be secretly doing does so itself. No thanks. "

I also say No Thanks!

To the Vendor: I would have been interested in this software IF it didn't do what it does by phoning home every 30 days. I also noticed in an old comment you made to another person that if he didn't like that feature not to buy it -- or -- to email you for a custom version.

With ALL the PRIVACY issues happening these days - I would think you would automatically have a version ALREADY programmmed that doesn't phone home every 30 days and offer it as an ALTERNATIVE and INCREASE your sales. A LOT of people are EXTRA PARANOID these days about their PRIVACY - including me.

Andrew Niese Sorry for the confusion Daniel. Normally it is 1 license for 1 installation. So for 22 concurrent installations, you need 22 licenses. If you have it installed on 22 systems (VM or non-VM) and want to install it on a 23rd system, you need to first uninstall one of the earlier installations.

However I see under "The Fine Print" that it says "Each license allows installation on a single computer and a laptop." That's a mistake on my part, it should not read "and a laptop". I will honor that that for this promotion only. So your interpretation would be correct (this time only) -- for every desktop/VM license you buy, you can install on one additional laptop (non-VM). Hopefully that makes sense!

Daniel Gaudet @Andrew Niese: I think it makes sense. Thanks for honoring the fine print.

I've gone ahead and ordered 11 licenses of X-NetStat 5.6 where I could install it on up to a max of 22 systems. I don't think I will need that many, but it's nice to have just in case. I do have 9 laptops and 4 desktops that I will be installing the software so that leaves me with plenty of licenses for my other systems and VMs.

When I want to migrate the licenses from one system/vm to another, do I just reach out to the e-mail in the contact information page or is uninstalling all that's required?

Amit Hello, I have a very important query that can x-netstat also restrict the bandwidth of individual applications too ? like say if a browser streaming a video, or any other application taking too much broadband bandwidth, then can it put a rule on it, to restrict the bandwidth the application is consuming, to only a certain amount, like 100 KBps or so. And if this feature is not still present currently, can you add this to x-netsat soon. Thanks.

May 6 2015 at 9:46am Copy Link

Andrew Niese @Amit -- X-NetStat does not restrict the bandwidth, only report on it. What X-NetStat could do is trigger a rule once bandwidth exceeds a certain amount, and respond to that rule with various actions --- for example, killing the connection or running a script. But it can not slow down or limit the rate of external applications. For that you would need a traffic shaping app. If you need that feature, you may want to look into NetLimiter. I have heard good things about it, but haven't tried it myself.

If you purchase later, you can still go into program afterwards to enter your registration code, and then the software becomes functional again. Hope that makes sense. I'll see about updating the listing.

Andrew Niese @Rick Fox -- It does not support IPv6 at this time. This is something that would probably be in the next major version release -- version 6.0 -- so the deal offered today would probably not include a free upgrade for IPv6 support. A 5.x to 6.x upgrade would be discounted but, not free.

Cary Adams I went to the web looking for reviews and instead found interesting pricing (non-promotional). For some time this product went for $12 (version 5.1), and at beta 5.6, $29.95. Now we're shown a regular price of $49.95. So from 5.1 to 5.6, the price has quadrupled? Is that right?

I 'm just wondering how good a deal this is at $19.98. I don't mean to be rude, but I don't understand your pricing. Can you elaborate please.
Dec 3 2015 at 8:00am Copy Link
0
Andrew Niese @Cary Adams -- The $12 cost of 5.1 was for a "lite" version that was discontinued a while ago. The $49.95 price point has been around since 2008, prior to that it was $39.95. The $29.95 price point is older than 2005, but it's possible some 3rd party websites still listed it at that. Over the years new features have been added, so you could say the value of X-NetStat has gone up over time. Of course value is in the eye of the beholder. It has been somewhat difficult to price XNS because of the diversity of users. Not everyone sees it the same, or uses it the same way. One customer may use it a few times a year to diagnose a problem, another may use it every day to monitor a mission-critical server.

Dec 3 2015 at 8:58am Copy Link

Andrew Niese X-NetStat can do some things NetLimiter can't, and vice versa. I can't speak on this comprehensively. At a glance, NetLimiter seems to have an advantage in displaying long term traffic statistics, and throttling bandwidth. X-NetStat appears to have an advantage in it's rules system, process and address tracing, and integration with other tools like Wireshark. It seems the 2 products could be complementary.

Rick Fox @Andrew, thank you for the answer. Money is really tight (spent up for Christmas really, and then some!) but I'm still thinking about it. I'll certainly watch how the program develops because I did like it when I trialled it some time ago. I was just totally skint then too.

To chime in with some of the above:

I used to use netlimiter a lot, and as I said I trialled X-Netstat. They definitely have different uses although there is some overlap in functions as mentioned. Similarly, with the rules system X-Netstat could be compared to a personal firewall but again there are big differences too.

While a program could attampt to do it all, I would not want something that 'large' running all the time.

X-Netstat looks to be a great monitoring tool and is something that I'm pretty sure will end up in my toolbox at some point. It would make a lot of what I seem to end up doing much easier.

Andrew Niese @Jason -- Not exactly sure what you're asking. If you're talking about automation, the rule system could be used to run a script to terminate internet access, but a dropped/disappeared connection is not a condition that the rule system looks for right now. If it was represented by a TCP/IP connection you could see the VPN connection appear and disappear from the connection table.

Albert Back in Aug, 2014, you stated the following:

"However I see under "The Fine Print" that it says "Each license allows installation on a single computer and a laptop." That's a mistake on my part, it should not read "and a laptop". I will honor that that for this promotion only. So your interpretation would be correct (this time only) -- for every desktop/VM license you buy, you can install on one additional laptop (non-VM). Hopefully that makes sense!

Also, is there a way to identify processes and then set priority and allowed bandwidth by program / process? This is useful when a specific program always wants to consume the network and you just want to put a limit on how much bandwidth that program can consume.

Mappi75 "Right now I am doing nothing with this information"

Hi Andrew,

thanks for the information!

One question:

Part 22: you give the information to 3rd party companys ?

What is this partner? Google? ;)

I understand the copyright thing - but in my opinion you will much more sell,
if you find another way for a DRM (or only go back to a serial number).

The people who wants to use the program will pay for this.
The people who dont want to buy the program dont (when i google i found more infos how to crack the program).

The offering here on Bitsdujour is great, would buy 4 copies (but need 1-2 only).

But the phonehomething disturb me.

Its clear too thats some programs will make this too,
without any communitcation from the company or programmer.

Another question:

will i have problems if i switch the Windows user often ?
I got Games from the MS Store which i need to log on with a outlook account (i hate this).

But normaly i would use another offline Account.

Will i have problems with X-NetStat?
Switching between Accounts?

Thank you very much!
Regards

Andrew Niese @Mappi75 it was a California company helping with piracy & copyright infringement issues, but they are no longer in business. So data is currently not being stored by anyone, although if you agree to the EULA you are consenting to that, the possibility that Fresh would start storing it again in the future.

I understand the annoyance of DRM equipped software, and it wasn't a decision I went into hastily, but after my own study showed a 99.87% piracy rate (6 paid copies per 4500 pirated) I had to do something.

There should be no issues switching between users, the installer should set it up across accounts, but I will need to verifiy that when I get home.

PortablesFan Usage scenarios question:
We recently got an NAS, and it's supposed to have an auto-sleep feature after a set time of no use. I don't think it's ever going to sleep, though, which makes me wonder whether something else (device or process) is accessing it that's not supposed to be.
Would this software help me track that down? If so, how?
Feb 24 2018 at 1:08am Copy Link

Andrew Niese PortablesFan, it monitors network traffic through a PC. If something on your PC is accessing the NAS it would show that.

John Hagel Can you clarify whether or not the access PortablesFan mentioned was in o out of view by x-net stat? PF asked about an outside interloper and you answered about an internal program or activity source. Does it detect and report on everything from either source that travels through a router and/or modem? I think of LogMeIn continuing after supposed shutdown as a possibility.

Alexandre Emeriau No update since 13 December, 2016 ?
On how many personal computers does a licence allow to use the software ?

Is there a portable release ? same limitations on licence ?
Aug 30 2018 at 4:28pm Copy Link
0
Andrew Niese Hi @Alexandre Emeriau --- correct that is the latest version. I consider the software pretty feature-complete for my purposes; I will probably be releasing a new version this fall, but what goes in it depends on if people submit requests for what they want. So please send your bug reports, comments and suggestions!

License details are under "The Fine Print", the # of computers depends on how many licenses you buy -- it is sold per computer. I.e number of computers that it will be installed on / used on simultaneously. So if you had a permanent home copy, and one you used portable (only on 1 computer at a time), you would need 2 licenses.

To use as a portable app you can simply copy the contents of the installation folder (Program Files\X-NetStat by default) to another folder on a USB drive or network drive.

Hope that helps!
Fresh Software LLC - Aug 30 2018 at 9:18pm Copy Link
0
Alexandre Emeriau As a portable release, we can use it on any number of computers, right ?

As there is usually no update, i propose a lifetime licence :)
Aug 31 2018 at 8:04am Copy Link
0
Andrew Niese @Alexandre yes, if you run it from a USB drive. In that example with 1 for your home and 1 for portable use, if you choose to install it on a 3rd computer, you must first uninstall from the 2nd computer.

The license upgrade policy is going to stay the same for now. If you look at the update history of X-NetStat, you'll see there are small increments to the version number (.01) for each update, even when those are "major" updates. As such I think the update policy provides a good value. The 5.x series will continue until it runs out of version numbers, or until I totally rewrite the software, whichever comes first.

Sara User Long but will save you searching thru the comments above in case:

Developer above on his tool regularly phoning home:
"1. Stats about what components are used (number of WHOIS lookups, number of program opens, number of killed connections, cumulative duration program has been running, etc) and also identifying information like IP address, computer name, organization name, etc.
2. Yes
3. Yes, it is part of licensing to fight software piracy.
4. The country and time zone are posted, but nothing more specific than that." -
I hope the program does NOT also STORE all external IPs my pc connects to, but just SHOWS them to me when "surfing" the web????
Also, I regularly use a VPN, and I often change VPN server country, so MY IP - which IS checked and stored and transmitted to developer - will change quite often (while my pc remains the same of course): So this tool quite soon will suppose my license is not valid (anymore)???? Also, my user account name will remain the same but is NOT my name: further problems in waiting?

Dave V on that: "Interesting that software designed to help you sniff out what other software may be secretly doing does so itself."

Developer: "Personally I think folks should be more concerned about NSA programs like PRISM than DRM systems that phone home." - Yes, that's why we're tempted to buy but see above.

Developer: "It does not support IPv6 at this time. This is something that would probably be in the next major version release -- version 6.0 -- so the deal offered today would probably not include a free upgrade for IPv6 support. A 5.x to 6.x upgrade would be discounted but, not free." - what about IPv6, and about upcoming paid upgrade, now in October 2018, how "necessary" would IPv6 support be, anyway? (I'm asking, not implying.)

Developer: "The $12 cost of 5.1 was for a "lite" version that was discontinued a while ago." - this should clarify, in case.

Developer: "X-NetStat can do some things NetLimiter can't, and vice versa." - my use case would be to monitor the tool how MUCH data some tools will UPload, in order to have a chance to become suspicious; that, X-NetStat seems to do; how MUCH data it uploads itself, once a month or in-between? (= just DRM data, or much more? in bytes/kb? see above)

Bits: "Please note folks: the license purchased today ensures free upgrades up to version 5.99" - see above

Developer: "That's a mistake on my part, it should not read "and a laptop". I will honor that that for this promotion [2014/2016] only." - so that's clarified for now.

Developer 2016: "the info includes details like windows username, organization name, workgroup name, IP address, etc, and program usage stats. Right now I am doing nothing with this information, in fact currently it isn't being stored at all. Previously it was used to measure program popularity and identify copyright infringement." and "no it can't be turned off. I wouldn't want to collect information without consent, that's why there is a EULA." - so we agree for this tool to upload quite a lot of data, even beyond sheer DRM needs (even if it does not do that for the time being)?

Norm Sash: "Hi... anyone know how this might compare with Microsoft Netmon?" - see above

Developer: "X-NetStat can monitor bandwidth by process, and react to it, but not shape it." - that's what I obviously need, no problem.

Developer: "So data is currently not being stored by anyone, although if you agree to the EULA you are consenting to that, the possibility that Fresh would start storing it again in the future." - see above

Developer: "I understand the annoyance of DRM equipped software, and it wasn't a decision I went into hastily, but after my own study showed a 99.87% piracy rate (6 paid copies per 4500 pirated) I had to do something." - WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's incredible and should make think again many more developers indeed.

Harold User: "The only payment option I see is Paypal." - Paypal's exchange rates are particularly ugly, so we pay a lot more here than would be necessary with credit card payment (another 2 bucks or so lost to PP for "nothing", even at this reduced price).

Developer: "it monitors network traffic through a PC. If something on your PC is accessing the NAS it would show that." - fine, and even very useful for workgroups; single user mainly needs it for web access monitoring though, and if it's absolutely reliable in this security functionality - no tools which would be able to bypass X-NetStat???? -, it should be of big value indeed.

Very good question by John Hagel: "I understand about outgoing traffic where contact originated in the computer being reported on. What about traffic originating anywhere else, like china or a neighbor and they are rummaging through your files? With the cooperation of your computer and maybe with nothing being added to your computer? Will that latter traffic be noted by your program and included in the output reports?" - Developer: "Yes, that would be shown too. Whether the connection is incoming or outgoing it will be in the TCP/IP stack." - As said before, "of big value indeed".

Developer: "Pro. But X-NetStat Pro was renamed to simply X-NetStat. Standard edition was renamed to X-NetStat Lite." - see above for the 12-bucks-offer some years ago; important clarification for such really dead horses not being whipped again and again.

Andrew Niese Sara, Im sorry I didn't reply until now, on your first note I didn't see an actual question, I thought you were compiling a list for other users. And yesterday I must have missed the email.

Bytes in/out only work when you depress the sniffer button.

Recognized tab shows any recognized IP addresses as defined by the user. XNS
comes with a default set which is why the Google Search was recognized.

Changing your IP address by VPN will not affect a X-NetStat license.

"System processes" under the Process column usually (always?) represent non-active connections that are garbage collected by Windows. If it has a Firefox icon it probably used to be a firefox connection. You can confirm this by checking the "Status" column

I'm not sure what your other VPN questions are.

Hope this helps, please let me know if you have additional questions.
thanks,
Andrew

Today's promotion does include a free upgrade to version 6.0 when it comes out, and all minor upgrades thereafter to version 6.99.

I will not be running a promotion like this at this price point again, so please consider purchasing today for the best deal. As always I'll be checking in throughout the day to answer any questions. Thanks for your support!

scott hamilton Will this work on a server with only virtual network ports?

Andrew Niese @scott hamilton short answer is I don't know. Haven't tested it in that environment. I believe it would. As there is a 30 day trial period, I would recommend installing before purchasing to verify.

Fletch Fascinating tool. A little overwhelming but then so is the number of connections to the outside world these days. Not updated in 4 years so must be pretty mature/stable.

I'm tempted just to have in in my toolbox. But from the how would I use it regularly perspective, I'm imagining perhaps the impossible. Which is (permanently) filtering out "known" traffic and learning about brand new processes that want access to the external network and where they are going. I manually manage my firewall so EVERYTHING has to be approved for access - making for a busy time in the 24 hours following a fresh OS install.

I did play with the filter and it's a little glitchy as new connections that don't match briefly appear.

On a 4k screen I can appreciate the option for font selection - as well as color since I prefer dark mode :) Then the little things like remembering column widths are nice.

Swiss army knife deluxe for sure.

Andrew Niese @Fletch thanks for your comment. It does have integration with Windows firewall, you can block IPs by right-clicking. A little basic now, but there is room for improvement, and the next version is in development. Please consider joining the beta test, I'd like to hear more of your ideas!

Andrew Niese @Barnet the official release is probably in May. Private beta is happening now. Public beta probably in March.

jboothco The description states this can monitor on your network which, to me, implies your LAN network. However, I believe this is a Windows application. Does this really watch the entire local network or is this just a Windows application which can only monitor the network traffic on the installation computer?

Andrew Niese @jboothco It's a Windows application which can monitor the network traffic on the installation computer.

Martin User Can this be used with a network tap to monitor network traffic? Obviously one wouldn’t see process, but would it provide other useful information like source and destination? It sounds like it can do this, but the screen shot looks more like just the running OS information. Thanks.

Robert Rodenberg It shows that the price is twenty-seven dollars. There is no "code" for Inputting in the purchase procedure allowing the system to charge $20.48.

Constantin Florea @Robert Rodenberg, Actually there is a coupon code available and it is presented right after the Get This Deal button is pressed, above the purchase options.

Andrew Niese @Martin User, in its current state, I doubt it. If the traffic doesn't reach the OS layer (transport layer), it won't display. The exception would be if the packet sniffer grabbed it on the data-link layer. But currently it's not designed to rely on the sniffer alone.

Mazen User I have read in the past reviews not sure it's true until I install the demo and if so maybe has changed, that X-NetStat collects more information than necessary. In one of the reviews on cnet and this is several years ago this is what was posted from your installation agreement -

"The following information about your computer is recorded into the Fresh Software User Registration Database: Computers current Date/Time, Program Name and Version, Registration Key, Computer Name, Computers Internal IP address, Username logged onto Computer, Operating Systems Registered Owner, Operating Systems Registered Organization, Computers Operating System type and version, Computers current date/time, Computers Timezone Setting, Computers Country Setting, Computers External IP address, and your Internet Service Providers hostname. For registered users, the above information will also be posted to our user registration database ON A REGULAR PERIODIC BASIS in order to update our registered user usage records. The post will not show up in the connection table..."Uh, tested spyware free? "

This is the main reason I have stayed away from purchasing X-NetStat. If this is not the case or you have changed the policy then I would be very interested in purchasing this for myself and recommend to others.

I have no problem with minimum information needed to protect your product from piracy but I am concern that it's too much information. What happens if I change username or IP address or it's on my laptop and I connect to a different wireless connection with different IP address and if I travel to a different timezone, etc... or rename my computer.

I hope this is inaccurate or at least has changed. Thank you. I think you have a wonderful product but not willing to give up too much privacy especially when there are so may data breaches these days.

Look forward to your reply and if you could tell me what information you collect for your database.

Thanks again

J S Hi Andrew,

I've got a bit of a bad habit of buying quite a lot of software on Bits du Jour - since I discovered it and Outertech Software back in mid 2009, and sometimes NOT installing the software immediately
...

I used to have a Lifetime Updates/Upgrades License of NetBalancer Pro up to v7.1.3, and then they changed their licensing system.

In the case of X-NetStat that I bought 19th May 2020, I still haven't installed the final v5.x version (because M$ Windows got badly corrupted) and then I forgot to install X-NetStat. When I originally made my purchase I mis-read the promotion and thought v5.xx was the FiNAL EVER release of X-NetStat. (After 20 years of development I stupidly thought it couldn't be developed any further)

Imagine my surprise when I discovered X-NetStat version 6 was released!! This program has cost me twice the price - so I hope it's worth it.

Martin User @Andrew Niese - thank you for responding. You may want to, in the future, modify how the product description is written. "everything that's going into and out of your network" - maybe you mean everything that is going into and out of your network interface.

Andrew Niese @Martin User -- that is an excellent point. Sorry for any confusion. I'll see what I can do about making it work with a network tap in the future.

Andrew Niese @J S -- I hope you find that it is; thanks for your interest and purchase and I understand how that can be frustrating. X-NetStat 5 came out in 2004 and went through 16 years of free updates. After rewriting it from scratch I decided it was time to consider XNS6 a separate product. All 5.x customers are permanently entitled to upgrade to v6 at 50% off --- the promotion today is a bit cheaper than that.

Martin User I note the new addition of packet sniffing. Does that mean one can now use a tap to review general network traffic flow, or is this still primarily for host based traffic only. Thx
Jun 9 2022 at 2:39am Copy Link

Andrew Niese @Martin User the packet sniffer is still limited to the host running X-NetStat.

Andrew Niese @Mustang I've logged the feature request as issue #833. If you're looking for something specific can you shoot me an email at drew @at@ freshsoftware dot com please. Otherwise I'll make a best guess for how to do this. For example, I could make a checkbox that just increases font size, or allow setting of custom font sizes/faces etc.

Nelson Carvalho I saw that in the installation of X-NetStat that there are several components (programs) added.
Are these programs free or will they be charged for updating?
Aug 10 2023 at 6:29am Copy Link

Andrew Niese Hi Nelson, X-NetStat is the only program installed during installation. After installation, X-NetStat can update optional 3rd party components to enhance overall experience. These are free, and not necessary to run X-NetStat. Hope that helps
